I have read everything I can get my hands on. I believe Earnhardt knew he was violating the manufacturer installation instructions, but it had always worked for him in the past. Simpson racing had warned him he was over 2 inches off manufacturer instructions in the past. Later tests showed this reduced belt strength by 60%. Not popular, but I believe Dale had his belt set up where as bad luck would have it, that huge white logo patch was close to, or in the left shoulder adjuster. This is what I believe cause the belt to ‘dump’ under load. This let the belt give enough to cause him to move forward and break the base of his skull with the ring fracture. RIP my hero #3

I believe that prior to 1960, there were only two 500-mile races in all of motorsports: Indycar's Indianapolis "500" (first run in 1911) and NASCAR's Daytona "500" (begun in 1959). Apart from endurance races for sports cars like Sebring and Le Mans, this was the longest race with a fixed number of miles or kilometers.
