Should've started a wheat farm and used wheat to lure the cows into the pit. Then start a cow farm, make bookshelves and leather armor, enchanted your wooden tools with unbreaking and efficiency, then enchant leather armor with protection and wooden weapons for damage to help with the ender dragon fight.
