He’s not a “great guy” but I got that he wanted to break up before the death of her family and couldn’t do it in light of her tragedy. I do feel that she should have picked up on the fact that the relationship was no longer working before the movie started. He can be a jerk but she’s also selfishly keeping him for her comfort because she needs something to cling to.

Never saw this as a happy ending. It’s horrifying and had a feeling of claustrophobia in her further isolation. She’s cut off from everyone she knew and is surrounded by a murderous cult. No victories there.

The worst part is that, all and all, the movie is just okay. Felt like even most of the messaging was half baked. If some aspects regarding the messaging had a little more thought out, maybe it could've been great, but... Yeah, it's okay.

midsommar GENUINELY effed me up mentally

The crying parts really get to me. I cry a lot and when I specifically hear her grief cry it gives me chills. My bestfriend killed herself last year and I cried and cried and cried for nights just like that. Her cry like that always gets me.

I mean, the movie really did it’s job for its target demographic for Christian’s. I find it kind of amusing, for I had seen this movie before when I was younger. Like this film is one of many exceptions that religious people make in terms of the type of content they find to be appropriate for children. This was a movie that a lot of Christians showed their kids too. Thanks mom and dad… I remember them getting pissed when I turned away from the screen from seeing Jesus getting horrifically whipped. And then proceeded to say, “Why are you turning away? This is what he died for.” Personally, this is the type of movie where, I’m like, “You’d have to be insane to do this conceptually.” And yet Mel Gibson being the insane man he is, pulled it off. And it’s crazy that it worked. And that it somehow fed into the target demographics, because of what it was. And that’s so bizarre to me, because like, on any other day, conservative Christian America would not be willing to watch a gore film or a subtitled film, but Mel Gibson got them to watch both…in one movie. And it was overwhelmingly successful.

I would watch my favorite movie again if only my attention span was long enough 😊 Time to watch three 40 minute long video essays about it instead!

The film is a damnation of the problem and the solution. We feel so atomized by capitalist society. We are divorced from our community, our extended family, and those closest to us. Its a world ill equipped to deal with trauma and people who actually have some need of a village. The alternative and abidication of self and ask us to drop whatever morals we have left in favor of certainty. Either way....her character is screwed....

Saying Dani is happy at the end of the movie is like saying someone in an abusve relationship is happy just because they have chosen to stay. It's fooling yourself into being with a cheater or abuser once you know who they are because surely they'd never do that to YOU. The cult in the movie k!lls indiscriminately and disposes of people once they are no longer useful. It's only a matter of time before Dani is next. And the scary part is that she will convince herself she is happy until they turn on her. She essentially escaped one abus!ve relationship and jumped into another.

Nah, i was disgusted and angry this entire movie. This girl has a Loving supportive boyfriend, whi may not want to be with her romantically, but obviously still loves and cares for her. Putting her needs and wants over his. She spends the whole movie gaslighting and manipulating him. The trajedy is overshadowed for pretty imagery and an unlikable pov character.
