Arbor Hills (2024) | Full Trail, Mountain Biking DFW
Located on the western border of Plano, Arbor Hills Nature Preserve is a 200-acre park featuring vast areas of natural beauty for walking, jogging, hiking, orienteering, and other outdoor activity…like mountain biking! The 3 miles of blue trail may not seem like it’s worth riding, but it’s really quite excellent.

    5:08 The original approach/drop to the upcoming climb was the trail option to the left, but the sudden cut to left you would have to make as you arrived at its bottom would drop your momentum and negate your potential to make the said climb in the middle. The option you took to the right was installed to alleviate the "slow down" and make the climb out more feasible. Many DORBA members knew this particular tricky climb and was popular during the races where 20-30 people would spectate the climb "zone". I was a trail steward for DORBA (Harry Moss) and, since 2002, have watched OCNP go from a jagged twisty rooty white-rock "mess" to a more polished trail. Several of the climbs you experienced in this ride are MUCH different (straightened) from how the trail steward "Shadow" designed. The steward in me wants to caution you from taking abrupt deviations left or right when the tread bulges from 3' wide to 15' wide, as every time your tires touch the tread of the trail, it changes the layout of the trail. This is why OCNP is littered with width bulges and forcing riders to slow down, lose momentum, and hindering their ability to accomplish the climb.

    Road this today for the 1st time. Not used to deep ruts - maybe the rains the past 2 months made them deeper - I clipped my pedals in the sides. Also hit my pedal in really high tree roots on the back flat section 🤦🏻‍♂️. Took me 35 minutes to complete, including 1 wrong turn at the end into the weeds and 2 had to dismount and walk up 2 root inclines. But I didn’t wreck. Temp 96/heat index 106 🥵

    • @danielrides
      @danielrides Před 28 dny

      The ruts can get pretty crazy for sure! They were a lot deeper in this video, than my one from a few years back. Erosion is the real deal! Not clipping on the ruts, and pedal striking the roots is part bike, part technique, part just knowing the trail. But not crashing is baller, great job out there! We usually stick to the AM to avoid the extreme heat, but the humidity is higher in the morning. Pick your poison in Texas. Where else have you ridden out here?

      Hey, thanks for watching! I’m currently running Conti Xynotal Trail front and rear. It’s been one of my favorite setups, but recently I realized you can only get one bead with these tires. I had them on five bikes, and every time I broke the bead, whether for wheel service or a sealant top up, the tire never went back on straight, it then had a really bad wobble. I learned this over quite a few attempts. So Julie’s bike we flipped back over to Maxxis Dissectors, MaxTerra, Exo+ which is pretty comparable. I hated the DHF, DHR combo. I don’t like DHR as a front tire either, everything DH felt very slow. I’ve had Rekon in the rear, and wanted more grip. I ran a Magic Mary/Hans Damf for a while and had no complaints. I considered Hans Damf front and rear, but ended up with the Dissectors again. What do you prefer?

      Hey, thanks for watching! This is a 22 Santa Cruz Bronson C, and I absolutely love this bike!

  • @brentfitzgibbon
    @brentfitzgibbon Před měsícem

    Good job keeping your momentum up. I rode these trails a lot in the mid 2000s and just went back a couple weeks ago and the climbs kicked my butt! Out of shape and the mix of climbing, rutted out roots, and the heat index it ended up taking me twice as long as you did. Without momentum any trail can be brutal though.

    • @danielrides
      @danielrides Před měsícem

      Thanks Brent! No kidding, riding these hot summer days is rough. The wet spring and crazy schedules have made it hard to get fitness back. But keep riding!

    lots of new homes. Is the trail on city owned land? Do they intend to preserve it?

    • @danielrides
      @danielrides Před měsícem

      The trails are actually built into the neighborhood as part of the master plan. Thankfully they are preserved, because they were always intended to co-exist. It's really a unique way to do things for DFW and I hope becomes the norm.

  • @danielrides
    @danielrides Před měsícem

    Not really. Like most of DFW you’re looking at some short bursts, but mostly flat.

    • @danielrides
      @danielrides Před měsícem

      I wish it was! But no, this is a Santa Cruz Bronson. It’s just me powering the thing! Have so much fun out there, be careful not to overheat on some of the longer climbs. This summer is brutal 🥵

    • @danielrides
      @danielrides Před měsícem

      @@tabcobrayeah that afternoon heat is a bear. We usually go in the morning, but then you get higher humidity. That 12 mile is tight and rooty…and not 12 miles. I usually do the unofficial 9 mile, and then an extra lap of the 3 mile. It’s a good trail as long as you enjoy climbing.

    Awesome video.. I plan to visit but probably hit up the green trail only as I am beginning my biking journey. Need to get in better shape before I start doing some hill climbs lol but I appreciate the video so I can get an idea of how the trails are.

    • @danielrides
      @danielrides Před 2 měsíci

      Thanks! There will be a little climbing to get to the Lost Boys loop. If you’re near Quanah, Parks of Aledo’s Blue loop, and Prairie loops might be easier. Also, Gateway west, and Fossil Creek are quite tame!

      This is at Northshore on loop 4 on Lake Grapevine in Flower Mound, TX. POA is Parks of Aledo, a trail system out in Aledo, TX. Thanks for your comment, I’ve really been working on increasing my jump quality, without getting hurt. The last year has brought a lot more air for me, and POA has been a big part of it.
