THE FARMSTEAD (CZcams series 2021)
Amidst a global pandemic high school sweethearts, Shawn Pila and Kelly Green, move back to their hometown and purchase a piece of property along the Big Island's lush Hamakua Coast where they plan to build their dream home, and a farm.
Watch this educational step-by-step approach to farming in Hawaii as the newlyweds, their pet pig Humphrey and a group of expert farmer friends work to transform an overgrown lot into home sweet homestead. But no one said that the "farm life" would be easy and finding balance between the daily grind and building a farm will have this young couple wondering if the juice is actually worth the squeeze.
It's off-grid, it's sustainable, and it's a taste of Hawaii that you'll never forget.

I’m glad I went through so many videos because I came across this one. Thank your cousin because this is a winner.
Lol epiiic glad we could help!!
Yeah, Im 5 ft and will NOT be using an auger on blue rock😂
I'm in Hawaiian Acres and its lava not soil. So checking this out for ideas to keep wild hogs feom eating my gardens..again😂 mahalo for info
I am a Canada citizen, and I am wondering if it's possible for me to buy a farmland in Hawaii to plant breadfruit trees? I love trees, and breadfruit trees in particular. And what type of visa with which I can work in the U.S legally and permanently, E2 visa? thank you in advance
I'm not sure on the logistics but my neighbor and his wife are from Canada and have been living in Hawaii for the last 10 years on a lychee orchard. It is very possible. Thanks for tuning in, aloha!
What sorcery was this?
Lol. Old Hawaiian Cowboy tactics 😎
Pretty much how everyone does it
Yeah that's what I thought cuz that's how it's done here in Hawaii, but I've watched a ton of h-brace tutorial videos on CZcams and there seemed to be a lot of extra tools and unnecessary apparatus being used. But, everyone has their own way of doing things and I felt the need to share this version. Thanks for tuning in 🤙🏽🤙🏽
Fantastic! Thanks for making a clean vid.
You bet, and thanks for tuning in!
Wow great channel and info, amazing message mahalo!
Thank youuuu! We aim to post more videos soon, so stay tuned and thanks for watching 😎🤙🏽
thank you, I found it very help full.
Awesome!!
Yeaaaa boiiiii
Yesssssah haha!
Awesome. I am building a goat paddock on a budget, and this helps a lot. All of the other methods require so much more. None of them look this clean. Thanks Brother!
Epic, glad we could help!
Thank you
:)
Mountain view?

cheeheeee yeah cuz!
This is what I was looking for!!!

😀how can I work in that farm?❤🙏
Awesome video!
Thank youuuuu!
Saving about 100 $$ and going with cousin Jesse's method today! Thanks cousin!
Yeeeee stoked, happy new year!
Wow, great video! 🔥🔥🔥 Dude is amazing!
Haha thank youuu, happy new year!
Happy new year to you too, Shawn!...hey, you totally deserve the praise...you're incredible.!!@@shawnpila
What is yhe technique to go down buddy ? Are u fly off 😮?
Lol kinda like a fire pole but with one hand around the tree and the other in between your belly and the tree so you don’t get scratched. And once you get to a comfortable height you can go back to frog or monkey 🙈
Where can we find episode 7, 9 and onwards?
Our appologies! We took a little break from filming and will be hoping to post the rest of the episodes soon. Thanks for tuning in :)
Aloha and Mahalo Nui!! Huge help and the best cleanest method I have seen!
Thank youuu, hope it goes well for ya!!
breadfruit is very known here in the Philippines. taste very very good
Awesome! Yeah it’s slowly making a come back here in Hawaii. Rice became very popular but we’re hoping to revive the ‘ulu in the next few years or so 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙌🏽
nice! very inspiring
Thank you!
Well done no fancy shit just what a farmer has at farm typically
Precisely 😎 LOL thanks for tuning in 🤙🏽🤙🏽
Pretty much the same way I've always done it except I always used one wrap of 9 gauge. I wasn't sure how well it would work with the 12.5 but it looks great, and looks better to me than the ratchet tighteners everybody seems to be using.
Totally! We would normally use 9 gauge but they were out everywhere, and this was peak covid so this was our only option at that time. 12.5 gauge much easier to work with tho so that was nice LOL. Thanks for tuning in 🤙🏽🤙🏽
I like your method; thank you for sharing it.
Awesome enjoy!
nice music where u get?
thanks mate the sound track is Jai Wolf "Starlight (featuring Mr Gabriel)
I like watching your videos, because me and my family are trying to re-work our old coffee farm in Captain Cook in Kona.
That’s awesome! Where are you folks at with things? If you’re removing crops and starting fresh I would definitely suggest cover cropping. There’s a cocktail of different cover crops (buckwheat, sunn hemp, lab lab, etc.) You can look more into it. And thanks for tuning in, we are hoping to be posting more videos soon :)
We use perenial peanut, but is there any other type of native crawler you could suggest?@@shawnpila
@@jeremiahochmann3336 awesome yeah perennial peanut is fantastic! If I’m turning a new paddock/plot I’ll usually start with sunn hemp or buckwheat and maybe follow it with lab lab. Lab lab is a great option, grows low to the ground like p peanut. But all of these options are to be mowed or flailed and cultivated back into the soil. We would normally use p peanut just as a ground cover option and added treat for livestock :)
I’m doing my braces this week, your method is the cleanest and most neat I’ve found yet, thanks!
Ayyy why thank you! Yeah it's the old Panilolo style and still a standard here in modern Hawai'i. Hope all works out for ya and thanks for tuning in:)
Where did you get that straw hat?
Kona Brewing Company LOL but they sell them at local hardware stores and surf shops 🤠
Ace has a ton right now
Hello !! Can I prune small breadfruit tree please??
Yes you can but it’s not necessary. I’ve pruned the lower branches of a one year old tree because it was getting too bushy and cluttered at the base. But it was more for the lawn upkeep and aesthetics.
Thanks alot!!
@@dorgelysamuel9815 :)
Where do you get the pins?
Forming pins can get at Home Depot, and the long pins for the H-brace at Tractor Supply, or online 🤙🏽

Thank youuuu!
Great video!
how big is the farm? nice vid !
Thank you and sorry for the late reply! It is 8.5-acres :)
This method has been a lifesaver! Best method I’ve seen and works great. Thanks for sharing!
Awesomee!! Yeah this is the old school Hawaiian cowboy method. Minimal apparatus and been used since the early 1800s. Thanks for tuning in!
It's wonderful 👍 may you live long with prosperity and health to enjoy the fruits of your labor.
Thank youuu and same to you and your loved ones! Sending aloha from Hawai'i :)

😄
Fantastic!🤙
Cute little buggahs 😋
Looking fantastic! Anyone have any recommendations on what variety of Ulu to plant in Mountain View….extremely rocky aina…about right at 1500’? We are on 4 acres…also….any thoughts on pushing the zone…I think it might be a little too chilly…black weed mat? For extra warmth maybe🤙
Although I prefer the Samoan variety (Ma’afala) I would try the Hawaiian variety (‘Ulu) because I think they are used to higher elevations. But you can try contacting the Hawai’i ‘Ulu Co-op for expert advice at www.eatbreadfruit.com
Oyes gott

Free climbers always fall down in the end, so better do this while young. Or start use rope 😊
Yeah I definitely know my limits and have definitely fallen.. not fun LOL.
