'History isn't simple, Britain helped dismantle the transatlantic slave trade too!' If that's your opinion, are you aware that it was also instrumental in starting the slave trade? Are you aware that after abolishing it, the government gave former slave owners money to compensate them for their loss of "property" but did not give former slaves anything? I'm not trying to be rude, I just think that these are things that a lot of us in the UK don't get taught and I used to be proud of our role in that history before I learned them. That said, I agree about the complex nature of history. That's actually why I agree with the video. I don't think he's simplifying history at all, I think he's making a moral judgement about the content of the values Britain purports to hold. In 2020, my grandmother told me that she didn't think they should have vandalised a statue of a famous slave owner because of his historical importance in circumnavigation. She told me tearing down statues was the equivalent of book-burning. She couldn't understand that the people vandalizing statues were not erasing history, but shining a light onto it. They were making a political statement about the way this country valorizes historical slave owners by prioritising their accomplishments over their moral crimes. In fact, Britain could not even have accomplished what it did without slave labour. So why are we celebrating the slave owners and erasing the slaves? Why were the slaves not paid for their labour? Not valued for their contribution? Because to value them would be to admit what we did to them, and what we stole from them too. It isn't a simple matter because history is not complex, but because the morality of the issue really is that simple.

I think the people saying stuff like "you can take the good and leave the bad" or whatever are missing the point. There is no good. It is all tainted by the colonial white supremacist project. Any good you attribute to Britain (or indeed US America) could instead be given back to its creators. The actual artists, philosophers, and communities that created the culture that the ruling class is so keen on appropriating. As an English man what good has my country done? Not any English/British person but the actual project of the nation and it's actual laws and actions? They have introduced and amended some laws to be less discriminatory and abusive to its and others' people. That is genuinely the best I can say about it. Tolerance is not just good it is actually the minimum you can do to avoid committing crimes against humanity. And IMO the UK doesn't even manage that! They say some of the right things but actions speak louder than words! (and of course that art/culture/philosophy also has its faults and was still raised on a diet of cis/hetero/patriarchal white supremacy)

I recently learned about Britain's Naval punishment of young soldiers and boys. It amazes me that leadership of Britain would wonder why younger generations wouldn't want to take up team based dehumanization. How would that call someone to pick up nationalism? I think the treatment of their own military and young soldiers shows that they uphold the crown and treat their best nationalists as indentured servants. It is inhumane. Actually sick. The identity is cruelty. How could people root for that?

I literally had a moment where I just broke down about living here. I was literally just on a walk and it was really scenic but I just felt that there is nothing here that is worth it for me. For context, I am a trans person of colour. It is so unnecessarily hostile and fake and I can't wait to leave. Also, i did also have a thought a couple years ago that British culture doesn't really exist outside of stealing from other cultures and coping with the shit that the government does to us.

The history of colonialism needs to be taught more in our schools and how awful it actually was. it has forever changed the world opinion on the UK and will stick with us forever unless we openly apologise and educate the next generation in our awful history we will be destined to repeat it. Historically speaking, yes, Britain did come up with some inventions that revolutionised the way we live but that pails in comparison to our past overall. There are some small things that I’m proud that we do well in the UK but all in all I am disappointed with this country and frankly I hate it if I had the money I would leave but unfortunately the government has kept me to poor and reliant on the handouts that they give me to wear. I can’t do anything with my life.

The few people I see still proud of being British aren't proud of the empire, but proud to be working class. Solidarity over being f*cked by the ruling class, and solidarity with everyone directly and indirectly f*cked over by said ruling class' colonialism. Unfortunately, even plenty of the people that denounce the empire still perpetuate its racism (as we saw with the lynch mobs this year). I am white british but have no pride in this country (its current and past state, crimes, and negligence), and have been on the receiving end of racist, proud british chavs (ironically). They see me as foreign for the minutest of reasons (and how they treated me would be unacceptable if I wasn't white british too, I'm just bringing this up to show just how sodding absurdly racist the UK is that proud brits will literally throw rocks at "fellow brits" if they don't look how they think white brits should look) and conflate that with being a tory (absurd, given a. their families are richer than my single mother, b. I do not support the Tory party and c. my beliefs actively conflict with the policies of the conservative party (and the red conservatives in labour)) and so excuse themselves as punching up when they're punching down. All because my accent varies (it's common for autistics' voices to change depending on their company and the media they watch), I dress "weird", my hair's too curly, etc. Basically, thank f*ck you've finally said the quiet part out loud. I don't know what you are after. There are parts of British history that have been genuinely impressive. There have been moments people came together to fight for social justice. There have been people living communally borrowing from the past and creating a present that suited them, in their time. It is the same as any other bloody country.

I get the impression from the comments that this video only goes over the negatives of british history while ignoring all the positives as well as ignoring british history before the british empire was formed. This isn't new, of course. People have been trying to make the british feel guilty about the countries past for years using that exact tactic. But the reality is that the british, just like literally everyone else, have a lot of things to be both proud of and ashamed of and so having pride in your country is perfectly fine so long as you accept history as it is currently understood and try and be better

i feel like the wording of this needs to be slightly different becuase while the content of this is solid and true it's more to do with the connotations regarding English identity which is wrapped up in all the nuances of colonialism,nationalism,racism etc etc which isn't to say being British doesn't grapple with these things. But to state this as an English concern makes it very explicit and centers this conversation on England and and being "English" has alot of associations regarding race and heritage around it (Scotland,Wales & Ireland all have their own issues to address with this aswell especially in terms of how they see themselves as more progressive in these kind of values), what i'm saying might be pedantic but you don't hear racists stating "Britian for the British"

My problem with our system and with Light isn't that people are removed from society. Indeed, some people need to be. But are those the only people who get removed? And is it fair? Do the powerful face the same consequences as the powerless? I think we all know the answer to that question. I don't think what Light is doing is evil, necessarily. It is objectively true that crime, war, etc. are down as a result of him putting people on the naughty list. But much like the criminal justice system, he tends to have a very blanket, broad view of anyone who is a criminal as being irredeemable. Yes, it is said that Light takes into account things like remorse, etc., but there is no way he has the time or resources to truly know the heart of a person. Personally, I think writing the names down of normal, run of the mill criminals is a waste of the notebook. The greatest value of it can be obtained when it is used to hold the powerful accountable. Rich people, politicians, corporate executives, etc. normally get away with just about anything. The notebook is the one thing that can actually hold them to account for the things they do and the harm they cause. That's how I would use it.

I've never been proud to be British, I came to similar conclusions about the empire and imperialism and not wanting anything to do with it. However, I think there is nuance in the empire, it wasn't just a conquering imperialist force with nothing good about it. It was instrumental in pushing the world forward technologically, and in ending the Atlantic slave trade. Human history is complex, and a lot of cultures are guilty of bad practices.

I'm proud of being British, and English, and European. It's all part of who I am.

I’m British, I don’t like Churchill, but he was a symbol of strength during WW2. In 1940, After France was utterly destroyed by German forces in just 6 weeks. Churchill went out and said we would fight for every inch of British soil, against a seemingly unstoppable enemy. I can at least give credit where credit is due. Churchill chose to be strong and we prevented an early German victory, which you can’t deny is a good thing. When you describe British history as “colonialism and slavery”, I’m not saying any of that was good, but we were by far the most lenient. Britain was the first major colonial power to ban slavery in 1834. The Royal Navy openly opposed slavery, embargoed and even attacked other nations that still partook in slavery. Britain is also the only ex-colonial empire to still have a positive relationship with many of their former colonies, we have a commonwealth. France, Belgium, Netherlands, Spain nor Portugal have the same standards as we do. Nowadays, although you don’t see it on the news, the French still commit atrocities in west and central Africa to this day. As for tony blair, screw him, he is a war criminal. British history is definitely not perfect, I would go back and change many things if I could, but we should learn the lessons and use it to build a better future, that is the power the current generation have. but unfortunately, I don’t see our generation changing much, we would rather blame each other instead of fixing the mess.
