    Good day, Doc. And well done. I really enjoyed your dissection of Wordsworth's definition of poetry which I have always criticised even when giving it to my students as definition of poetry. " A spontaneous overflow of powerful emotions and feelings recollected in tranquility". I believed that his romantic-age context must have necessitated such a definition. In addition , I have heard of poets who love to write in a noisy, boisterous setting. Thus, his idea of "tranquility" doesn't matter to them. The same fate is that of stream of consciousness technique by prose writers. ( Example like the Botswana and South- African based writer, Bessie Head). I am always wary of such a technique. It sounds unbelievable or unrealistic. Well done and more strength 🙏

    This is a very interesting lecture, and I am currently updating my mental library and repertory. Thank you Professor sir. I agree with Professor; of course, intertextuality is a basic tenet that one must understand about creative writing. Julia Kristeva's idea of intertextuality in literature in the 1960s is relevant in today's world. It connotes that every writer's texts borrow from other knowledge sources either consciously or unconsciously. In fact, Harold Bloom (1973) in his "Anxiety of Influence" corroborates by asserting that a poet must have been influenced by another poet in the making of poetry. The point is simple. One unforgettable knowledge I have learnt here is that, creative writing is a practical marriage phenomenon, such that there are a series of conjugalities between the writer's original thought and what they come across in the actual world. In summary, nothing is new under the sun as previous writers must have done something similar to what we may be imagining. However, the creative writing skill gives us the privilege to rebrand, reshape and refine ideas such that the presupposed old becomes a new old. Sunday-Caleb Akingboye

  • @akingboyesunday3129
    @akingboyesunday3129 Před 3 měsíci

    This is not just an introduction, rather it is a propelling force that fans the dying embers into fire. Creative writing is not a done deal, rather it is a process. It is never a fixated hegemonic discourse but a dynamic transition across ages. There is a vacuum somewhere that I need clarity. Does being creative means being critical? In other words, is creativity synonymous to criticality? I consider them intersectional. But a more superior explanation from Professor will help. This is mind blowing and insightful. I appreciate this slice of intelligence, sir. Sunday-Caleb Akingboye

    • @AbayomiOlusegun-Joseph
      @AbayomiOlusegun-Joseph Před 3 měsíci

      Thank you so much for your kind words. I think we'll need to understand that creative writing, as an integral aspect of socio-cultural or human expression, is a product of certain clear or unclear origins of impulse. Impulse is necessarily a trigger that blows up some accumulating or climactic content of experience provocative enough to warrant "nuanced testimony" through the imaginative act of writing. In this very rather surreal context of its emergence, we may say that creative writing responds to something within the writer, resulting in a "purgation" of their erstwhile "repressed" feelings. This may be a playout of intra-personal emotion peculiar to their private world, or it could be a critical expression in conversation with the larger domain of society and its often complex frameworks of inclusion and exclusion. In this regard, creative writing could be "critical writing!" This peculiarly seems to be the life-stream of most "counter-writings" engaging social, ideological or political phenomena at odds with their oppositional ways of viewing things or the world.

    These classes on Structuralism and Postructuralism really achieved one of the goals of the channel: "demystifying complex literary theories and making them accessible to everyone". From Roland Barthe's Death of the Author( which I prefer to now call, Silence of the Author) to Foucault meditations on Discourse. The same goes for Derrida's Deconstruction. These cryptic and esoteric concepts are well simplified in these classes. I will advise watchers to go ahead and read the notes underneath the videos. These synopses of the classes are laconic and lucid. Well done, Doc. These are not only invaluable germs of the moment but of all times.

    • @LiteratureSoWhatLSW
      @LiteratureSoWhatLSW Před 8 měsíci

      Many thanks, Glory. Literary theory may be defined as a critical attitude, opinion and/or prescription of reading or evaluating literature based on certain conceptual yardsticks constructed and/or prescribed by theorists. This makes no theory or theoretical framework absolutely definitive of how literature or any socio-cultural construct "must" be read because theories are based on non-uniform intellectual viewpoints which can be proposed, circulated, routinely revised, ruptured or dispensed with.

    Few weeks ago, Prof. Adeshina of the University of Ibadan gave an insightful lecture on the songs of the Nigerian artiste, Brymo at Emory University, US. He started his talk by anchoring it on Barthes' Death of the Author. Then, the social media exploded. Who want our "god of music" dead? The scholar was excoriated and castigated by even the artiste. The lecture is still on CZcams with one synecdochic comment of his fans that alleged the scholar of morbid thoughts. I wish they listen to this. Well done sir for the enlightenment. More strength 🎉🎉. Many thanks, Deji. Thanks for your kind feedback and analytical gaze. Indeed, poststructuralism itself is a fluid theory against theory, and it is even not ashamed to antagonize itself along this line! While critique against the death of the author may be attacked, it still remains a complex juncture of discursive negotiation which LSW will subsequently explore. Again, so grateful for your kind observation. Warm regards.

    Formalism privileges the plot, not the story. In other words, how something is being said is more important than what is being said. The school of Russian formalism gives credence to how language is structured uniquely to achieve literariness, not necessarily the contents. The form embodies the aesthetics that make literature what it is. Well done sir. We are learning.

    Literary theories, or otherwise known as critical theories do have numerous purposes and one of them is to engage the mind and expose the human thinking faculty to a plethora of perspectives about phenomena. However, it is important to establish the fact that theories come with biases in some cases. A typical example is William Shakespeare's audacious attempt in "The Tempest" to theorise a kind of Eurocentric modernist ideology of dominating a territorial space in the characterisation of Prospero. Through the understanding of modernism for instance, one can say that colonial narratives could intend to throw shades of biases on people and cultures considered low. And of course, postmodernism will always counter such narratives. Therefore, the point is that, when one theory says something and another theory counters it, then one becomes more sensitive, knowledgeable and oriented as all theories contribute immensely to knowledge. No theory is a waste. Well done sir. I testify to the progress of this intellectual industry. More grace sir.
