Brushless Conversion for Orlandoo Hunter Trophy Truck (OH32X02)
Sorry it's been a while since the last video! Today let's do a brushless conversion for the Orlandoo Hunter Trophy Truck. I built this OH32X02 a year ago, and it was an epic build. I used standard electronics suggested by the manufacturer. Let's change out the N30 brushed motor to this brushless motor. Along with it I will use this DasMikro DSK-170 AFHDS3 + 18A brushless ESC combo board.
The Orlandoo Hunter TS0002 brushed ESC is convenient to use and it works okay, but there are big limitations too. It's forward/reverse only without brake support. It also doesn't have good low end throttle control. I don't have the model number for the brushless motor with its 1:10 reduction gearbox, but I've included a product link below. It's an outrunner design so clearance is important. It fits perfectly in this truck. It uses the identical 1:10 gearbox as the NR3000 N30 motor. Had I known this, I would've gotten the faster 1:5 version to have a second gearing option.
I have hanged onto this combo receiver/ESC for a long time now and it's time to bust it out. Think of it as a combined NB4 micro receiver and a HobbyWing 18A brushless ESC. Power and motor wires need to be soldered manually, however. As usual, I use JST-PH 2mm 3p for the battery connector. The wires for battery must be done carefully to prevent wires from coming loose in the future and shorting the lipo pack. Since the brushless motor is already wired with a JST-ZH 1.5mm 3p, I'm soldering a matching connector here. Let's test things out here. This ESC can be programmable too, though the process is quite tedious.
But wait, we need one more piece of the puzzle! This little board is a switching voltage step-down module. Why this is needed requires a bit of explanations. The standard 2.2g Orlandoo Hunter servo, like basically all 2g servos, runs on 1S 4.2V power. The brushed Orlandoo Hunter ESC TS0002 embeds a convenient voltage step-down servo port, but we don't have that anymore. I bought this very inexpensive step-down board to bring the DasMikro's 5V BEC to 4.2V to reduce the chance of burning out the servo motor. I could use a much simpler resister approach, but this board should be more reliable. The board has an adjustable step-down dial. What I'm doing here is using the multimeter to dial in on the amount of stepping down. After some trial and error, I got it close to 4.2V. I'm going to step-down only the red wire. The signal wire will run straight up at the 5V BEC. This is slightly risky but we will see how it goes.
This setup seems to be working now. I'm pretty proud of this! Also worth noting that I needed to chop off the original connector on the servo. I'm connecting another JST-ZH. It took a bit of patience to get all the boards and wires into the cage but it's all good here.
Let's test run the truck at home. It's quite nice to have brake once again. The brushed motor before naturally had more drag brake. But with the TS0002 ESC, it still felt a bit janky to brake by reversing. That system is more suitable for crawlers. This brushless motor and brushless ESC setup runs more smoothly. The initial impression is a bit of a surprise to me. I was expecting to have noticeably more speed than the brushed setup. However, this 1:10 brushless setup seems to have a similar top speed. It's not slow, but I should've picked up the 1:5 version. That said, the brushless setup generates noticeably more torque. It accelerates to top speed much more quickly. The extra torque also means it's easier to break rear traction and drift around a turn.
The RWD trophy truck is so much fun to drive around. It's semi drifting on this surface and it's quite easy to control.
This is Sammy and thanks for watching!

      In the mini-z product line up, the only one that can drift is ma-020/ma-030evo, but it's AWD drifting instead of rwd. This is the simplest. RWD drifting is more complicated and expensive. There's an upcoming third party product called MRD which is a RWD conversion kit for ma-020, but it's not available yet. To go further with RWD drifting, you can look into brands such as DriftArt, MA Racing, Atomic DRZ, etc.

      Thank you. It feels quite different on the track. Less weight, especially at the top, means the car is much more nimble. Compared to a hard body, it accelerates and brakes faster, and can go around corners at a faster speed. It feels really good to drive. With a proper front bumper, front side collision is pretty manageable. However, lexan bodies don't provide any protection from side or rear hits.

    Hi Sammy! What was the total cost for all the little parts you needed to get this working properly? I am curious how it compares to the around $199 USD price tag for a new MA-020 AWD Dodge Challenger that's already 98mm and wide.

    • @sammybaka
      @sammybaka Před měsícem

      Based on amain prices: 98mm extension blocks ($8), bulkhead top cover ($10), bulkhead bottom cover ($10), and long alloy cvd (around $20). This adds up quite quickly so if you are looking for 98mm and/or wide setup, starting with the challenger is a good idea.

      I haven't put an ma-020 on an rcp track before so I'm not sure what tires would work well there. On RCP or carpet there will be a ton of traction and real chances of traction rolling; on that surface, I would go with harder compounds probably 30 or even 40 degree. If you are running on more slippery surfaces like at home, then you will want all the traction you can get, such as 20 degree radial.
