SWCP Day 46 Durdle Door to Chapman's Pool 4K
I woke up to the sound of rain drumming against my tent. It always sounds worse than it is, but this was one of those occasions where it really was that bad. With the rain not forecast to clear until early afternoon, I decided I would pack up and push through it. By the time I had walked the short distance to Lulworth Cove I was drenched. The access along the beach was cut off by both the tide and the cliff fall part way along the bay. I took an inland diversion up and over the cliff fall and into Lulworth Ranges. At this point the rain had eased and I was hopeful it had cleared earlier than forecast. Moving on past the fossil forrest, containing the fossilised remains of early conifers dating back 135 million years. The walking remained easy and dry until I reached Mupe Bay. At this point the rain returned, making the climb out of Mupe Bay an even more challenging experience. Looking in land I was able to see the shells of tanks, used for target practice, as I continued towards Arish Mell. The rain and wind were making the day hard work and continued to hit me on the climb up to the hill fort at Flower's Barrow. 30 minutes later I had descended into Warbarrow Bay and was relived that the sun had come out. The path became easier for a time along Gad Cliff, walking parallel to Tyneham Village, commandeered by the military in the 1940s and deserted to this day. Finally I reached the end of the ranges emerging into Kimmeridge Bay. The sky turned black by the time I reached Clavell Tower, allowing me just enough time to put my waterproofs back on before the rain resumed. The path by this point had become very muddy and I was having trouble staying on my feet as I approached Houns Tout. The path at the top of Houns Tout is diverted inland to Kingston before returning to the coast at Chapman's Pool, a total of 3 miles added to the walk. One final climb up West Hill saw me arrive very wet, muddy and tired to where I had planned to spend my final night on the path.

SWCP Day 45 Ferry Bridge to Durdle Door 4K

After surviving a night of 45mph winds, I packed my tent and made an early start. From Ferry Bridge the path continues along the Rodwell Trail, a flat tarmac section, before passing Sandsfoot Gardens and Castle. The path then leads through a tree lined residential area avoiding the old closed route along Western Ledges. The walking remains easy and I was soon in Nothe Gardens. I followed the pa...
SWCP Day 44 Portland - Ferry Bridge to Ferry Bridge 4K

As Portland is a circular walk with a carpark at the start/finish I decided to walk this stage as a day trip. Starting at Ferry Bridge I followed the right hand side of the causeway, saving the dismantled railway for the return leg. After walking beside the road for a mile or so I decided to climb the pebble bank of Chesil Beach and walk beside the sea instead, much more scenic. At the end of C...

Knowing I had a long day ahead of me, I woke up early and left Burton Freshwater. Leaving the campsite I climbed up Burton Cliff and along a flat cliff top path onto Burton Beach which was empty apart from a couple of fishermen. I climbed gently out of Burton Beach and on towards Cogden Beach. The path at Cogden is along the pebble beach and is tough walking as the ground shifts under your feet...

A short bus ride from my camp site and I was back on the path in Lyme Regis. I knew that if the tide was out I could walk from Lyme Regis to Charmouth along the beach, but that was not an option when I was there. A steep climb out of Lyme Regis through some fields brought me to Timber Hill, a pretty woodland section with a beautiful display of Bluebells. After clearing the wood I walked along a...

I woke up early, partly due to to the severity of the walk ahead of me but also due to the wildlife that didn't seem to have a snooze button. The walk started off with a steep climb out of Salcombe Mouth but I was rewarded with one of the best view points/bench's I can remember for many miles, looking down onto Weston Mouth. A pleasant walk through Dunscombe Coppice followed, with wild garlic a...

With some settled weather forecast I packed my bag and headed back to the path. After catching the ferry from Starcross to Exmouth I enjoyed an easy walk along the promenade past the RNLI Satation. A short climb at Rodney Point brought me to The Geoneedle which marks the start of the Jurassic Coast. I continued along grassy cliff tops before reaching the Devon Cliffs Holiday Park and their nois...

A rare appearance from the sun was all I needed to get back on the path. I set off from Oddicombe in the early morning sunshine with the hope that spring had finally arrived. The walk started with a pleasant woodland stretch along Shag Cliff before reaching Watcombe Beach. The path then skirts alongside grass fields before reaching Maidencombe and on beyond Blackaller's Cove, Mackerel Cove and ...

It's a new year and time to get back on the path. I pick it up at Brixham Harbour where I left it 5 months earlier. A short walk around the harbour saw me reach the former WWII artillery compound of Brixham Battery. The picturesque Churston Cove was soon reached followed by a muddy woodland walk on to Elberry Cove and it's 18th century bath house erected by Lord Churston. A series of promenades...

Having had a good nights sleep I packed up camp early, expecting another long challenging day. A gentle start in the early morning light was short lived and I was soon faced with a steep sided grassy valley at Landcombe Cove. The climb was rewarded with a view down to Blackpool Sands. A long climb parallel to a road saw me leave Blackpool Sands and reach the quiet village of Stoke Flemming, pas...

Having waited 2 years the time had finally arrived to head to Dorset to attempt The Jurassic Coast Mighty Hike. 26 miles along some of the most scenic coastline and countryside. The walk was set to be made more challenging as it was forecast to be one of the hottest days of the year! The walk starts at Lodmoor Country Park in Weymouth. It's an early start knowing I had around 20 miles to cover. I head into Salcombe where I am left frustrated having to wait an hour for the water ferry. Once across to East Portlemouth I was met with some beautiful views back to Salcombe made even more impressive by the early morning light enhancing the turquoise water. An enjoyable but occasionally exposed mid cliff walk saw me pass Gara Rock, ...

Having successfully crossed the Erme the previous week I was all set for 3 days back on the bath. Starting at Bigbury-On-Sea I soon reached Cockleridge where you are instructed to ring a bell and wave at the thatched cottage to attract the ferryman to take you across the river Avon. Easy but busy paths saw me pass Bantham and on to the magnificent archway of Thurlestone Rock. Shortly after I re...

The day has arrived where I need to tackle the Erme. With tide times in my favour I set off on a comparatively easy walk to Warren point and across the Yealm before more easy walking along Revelstoke Drive on towards Stoke. From Stoke the walk becomes more of a familiar coastal path with a few hills to climb before reaching Mothecombe and the Erme. Safely across the Erme and feeling quite pleas...

After several months away I return to the SWCP to complete Plymouth part 2! I pick up the path just after the Barbican and finish at Wembury Beach. It is often a section skipped by many coast walkers, by catching the ferry from the Barbican to Mount Batten, but it is a section I was looking forward to as a Janner myself. The walk may not be the most scenic but there is plenty to hold your inter...
