I initially applied for the role of Pilot, due to a medical issue I was unable to continue pursuing this role so subsequently went for the role of Weapons System Operator (WSOp) and received my offer of service!
Please note by the time you are watching this video the application process may have changed. Make sure you contact your careers office for the most up to date information.

How tall are you ?
Are you allowed to bring in notes for the interview and can you bring a paper and pen into CBAT Test. Also what tips do you recommend a young person wanting to join the RAF as a pilot and what they should be doing now to maximise their success. Thanks for this great vid, hope your doing well.
No notes in the interview, you won’t need a pen and paper for the CBAT as everything will be provided for you. I would speak to the careers office and they can put you in contact with people who would be useful in your preparation. Get in the habit of exercising regularly as it’ll be easier for you when you do the fitness tests. Practise lots of speed distance time calculations and look online for the CBAT tests, there are apps that will help with CBAT preparation aswell. Hope this helps!!
Once your in the Air Force, you'll have far more good times than bad. When you'll look back in years to come you'll be glad you did. Stick with it.
What type of questions where on the CBAT, Im applying for ATC and don't really have and idea of what the aptitude test will be about
If you look up RAF aptitude tests on google there is plenty of resources that take you through what sort of tests will be included :)
does anyone know if this process has been updated/changed much?
Yeah mate OASC has been changed to one day so you do your medical and fitness test before you go
Also with it only being one day now, the final interview isn’t as long.
you can go into the RAF as a supply running pilot
Great video. My son is considering the RAF. I will send it to him. Thanks for making it and answering all of the questions.
Hey, not sure if you would see this but I hope you do. First of all, thank you for this detailed video on how the entire recruitment process works. Just out of curiosity, what do you do now? I saw your pinned comment on how WSOP didn’t work out for you, did you switch your trade after that? Or did you decide to leave the RAF completely? I am actually planning on joining the RAF after university as I believe I need more life experience before I join the RAF, alongside university I am also planning on joining the University Air Squadron next year (doing a foundation year for the first year and they don’t allow that). The main role I was really considering was the role of being a pilot and my backups being either a Weapons Systems Operator or a Air Operations (Systems) Officer. Now I know how demanding the pilot role is and how competitive it is, it is probably likely that I won’t get it so I am really preparing to look at all my options. Anyways, I was just wondering, what was the case with wsop that it didn’t end up working out for you? Also, would you know how much officer training differs from NCO training? A response would be greatly appreciated. Once again thanks for making this video.
Hey can I get your Instagram account handle?
Did they ever ask for your medical records?
You will do a medical assessment and so they will see your records.
Royal Air Force Aircrew applicants Fitzi LOVE LOUIS SHIRLEY
Hi guys, I’m an applicant in the process of joining the Royal Air Force as a Reg Gunner. I’ll be covering the entire application process on my channel, which may interest some of you. I posted my first video regarding the DAA on Saturday. Please let me know if it was helpful, thank you.
Hi Sam. It was great listening to you talk about your RAF application. My son is just beginning the application so as you can imagine we are trying to get as much info as possible that may help him. My son is 6' 2, he is applying for a pilot role. Can you tell me how tall you are ? Thanks Mark
I’m 6’6. It’s all to do with body part measurements though rather than overall height. You could be the tallest person in the world but have T-Rex length arms that wouldn’t do you any favours in a cockpit haha. I would assume he’ll be fine though!
@@fitzi2696 thanks Sam. I wish you all the best in your career in the RAF. Mark
how'd It go?
Thanks, that was really helpful! Do you remember what the pass mark/percentage was for the CBAT, that was needed to become a pilot?
I believe the score you had to get was around the 130 mark for pilot. May have changed now and so I’m not too sure.
@@fitzi2696 thanks appreciate that. Do you know what the total score is out of I.e. 200 marks?
@@izzyevans41 Not sure what the max score is, as long as you’re getting over the minimum requirement then you’ll be considered at least. Obviously the higher the score you get the more competitive for selection you will be
@@izzyevans41yes the total is 200, but I doubt that’s ever been achieved.
Thanks for this video, I'm doing my filter interview next week at some point which is all recorded answers rather than in person now but I assume the questions are the same. Gonna need to reach hard to find examples of leadership as I haven't had much experience in all honesty. I was self employed previously so haven't had a "real" job, I wonder what kind of impact that'll have on my application
do you have some links to maths revision and or nearings/ angle? please kindest regards mickT
Very useful, much appreciated for uploading this
Hello, I hope you're well, how is your career in the raf going, I've seen that you are retraining as a Gen tech M. You're video is very very useful and thanks for the advice and help through the process. I've got 2 questions I was hoping you could answer: Were you allowed pen and paper in the CBAT at all. And how did you prepare for the bleep test as I have nailed the press ups and sit ups but struggling with the bleep test so any advice would be appreciated, thanks.
Hi Moaeez, it’s going great I’m enjoying it a lot. In the CBAT I can’t remember if they give you a pen and paper if I’m honest. I don’t think so though as it’s all on the computer and keyboard. With the bleep test, work on doing what’s called ‘negative split running’. Let’s say you run 3 miles, do the first mile at 9 min per mile pace, 2nd mile at 8:30 min per mile pace and 3rd mile at 8 min per mile pace. Or if you have a 400m running track near by or a large field, run a mile and a half (2400m) with every 100-200m being slightly quicker than your last. Basically keep speeding up rather than slowing down as you run. It’s hard but effective for the bleep test! Hope this helps!
@@fitzi2696 thank you very much for taking the time to answer the questions, very much appreciated. I will take your advice onboard and start training accordingly, thanks again!
Hi there, is there any way to contact you for some advice? It would be greatly helpful
Yeah sure, I set up an email so people could contact me. It’s in the description of the video :)
what wouldve you done before to prepare before you entered your interest and went into the training
Just passed my AST's. This vid has been a big help in revision and prep, thank you.
Hi guys, I'm an applicant in the process of joining the Royal Air Force. I'll be covering the entire application process on my channel. I just posted a video about the Selection Interview on my channel which I think may interest some of you! I'd appreciate it if you had any feedback too. Thank you.

hi mate why didnt wsop work out?
I was too young and inexperienced at life when I was going through the training at Cranwell. Personally I found the pressure too much to deal with at the time. Just one of those life lessons really!
@@fitzi2696 what do you do now?
Do you get told what to revise?
This is video is very informative and gives a good insight into the process. it’s also admirable how you took the news about your height and just got on with things.
Is eyesight a big issue, and if it is how good does it have to be?
For aircrew roles eyesight is taken into account and will be tested. You’d have to ask the careers office for the standard as I’m not sure.
Anthropometric test. Can only imagine how disappointing that must be.
Did you have to do a pre fitness test as well as another fitness test at the OASC ? It says on the RAF website that the candidate need to run 2.4km and do the multi stage fitness test ?
I didn’t when I joined up, it may have changed now.
Tucanoo cba
i have my CBAT on Thursday got to arrive Wednesday i am beyond nervous , applying for WSOp . Any advice on how to keep the nerves down ?
Just treat the CBAT as a video game, even though you’re being tested it still is quite fun!
How is the Officer cbat different to the aircrew one?
Each officer/aircrew role has different specific tests that will score you points for the role you are going for
You can always get your commercial license in the civvy world ……if you really want to do that later !
This a very informative video and I appreciate it greatly. Just accepted my CBAT to go to Cranwell on the 12th of October. Do you have any advice on what to revise and how to do it? Like what sites did you use to get experience on the questions that could come up, it would be greatly appreciated. Hope your career is going well in the services
How was it?
You had a month to prepare for the interview, I have 4 days 😂
how'd it go?
@@ImpetusM fine, it really isn’t too bad I got stumped by a few of the questions but it didn’t seem to matter
@@ampxz951 so, where are you at with your enlistment?
@@ImpetusM about to do my fitness test as I have had it cancelled bc of tonsillitis and over Christmas I couldn’t do it. The training season starts on the 22nd April so I expect I should start roughly around that time
Hello there may I know what the medical issue was?
He said it was due to height.
What is the score u had to get
Im just about to do my a-levels and am an aspiring Pilot, ive kept coming back to this video for the past two years and i dont doubt this will be the last time. How is your career in the RAF going
howd the a levels go
Can gurkhas join RAF?
Are the tests all about maths and science or are there more?
Hey man, I’m a hard aspiring RAF pilot and want to apply as soon as vacancies open up again. Can you elaborate on how everything went from the moment you applied to your first stages of testing and interviewing. For example, did you have to be interviewed after you applied before being accepted in for testing etc, or was your application just accepted and they took you in for testing evaluating etc!
how is your application process going, im an aspiring RTAF pilot too. Would love to hear and the best of luck
@@coreyshields6765 Same I'm hoping to apply as soon as they're recruiting again
The RAF do like you to wear a matching waistcoat in addition to your suit I don't know why. I was accepted for Navigator not Pilot 1979 during "A" Levels at Boarding School so I walked away. I passed all Pilot Exams at the first attempt commercially(including Instrument Rating) but the money was better working in an Oil Refinery as an Oik.
hi sam, what is air power and the components of it?
If you search on google ‘RAF components of Air Power’ it will give you them. Hope this helps!
Thank you for this video buddy its helped me out a fair bit. I've got my CBAT in the next few days. Just seen your comment below that you're a GTM (TG5?). I hope it's going well for you 👍
What is the maximum height to be able to join the raf as a pilot?
It’s not your overall height, but specific measurements of body parts. I can’t remember the measurements now if I’m honest. Maybe speak to the careers office and ask to speak to a medical person that does the aircrew measurements. Hope this helps
@@fitzi2696 It does! Thank you
