Built different
Are you telling me they straight up copied the ability form Pokemon?
Yep, it's inspired by Pokémon! Many games draw inspiration from each other. This was always my favorite ability in Pokemon, so I've adapted the concept to fit Algomancy's unique card game mechanics and ruleset.
What do you recommend sleeping Algomancy in? Looking forward to getting my copy in a few months!
Assuming you meant sleeving, I personally love dragonshield black matte for the game cards and dragonshield clear for the resources and tokens. Although sleeving the base game in dragonshield clear is a good option too, it makes them feel bigger since they don't have a border. That's easier since you'll only need one kind of sleeve for everything
@@CalebGannon TIL iPhones do not recognize sleeving as a word. Thank you for the tips :)
Algomancy everyday
Do a live gameplay!
Working on it! :)
Looking forward to getting my constructed bundle :) Caleb, what are your ideas for future expansions? Is there a specific amount you intend to design, or will there be expansions until end of time like Magic? Do you have ideas on how to handle the inevitable overpowered combos? Will the first edition cards shipped to backers be special in any way to represent the very first print run? Edit: I read the campaign page and found the answers to all of these
Haha awesome! If you do wanna help out in testing or chatting about expansions, feel free to hop in the discord. I'm actively working on the next set right now discord.gg/Sur3kSw8
@@CalebGannon Nice! Will do :)
Is there any reason to ever take more resources than the two you can activate each turn?
Generally no. There are some marginal uses if you want a small hand size for certain effects or to avoid discard. But otherwise you might as well wait to make the resources when you can activate them.
For sure. This game looks fun
Fire! Burn. Counters. Fun game must buy
this is so sick!
Thank you! :)
Im so excited to get this when it comes out!
Wooo! Hopefully soon! :)
There’s a game just like storybook brawl called fairytale fables and I’d love if you try it out it’s literally the sma thing at storybook
Reminds me of ninjitsu from magic or some of the recall stuff from Ionia in legends of runeterra.
Yeah it was definitely inspired by ninjutsu in MTG. The difference is that ambush uses the stack, targets and can be done on any unit. so it's more flexible but also riskier
I dont get how if they have 1 and i have 3 i lose all 3. I dont get the how the "half" means all 3
I definitely misspoke. You would lose 2 (half rounded up). What I meant is that all 3 are able to be sacrificed
Great vid thank you!
Looking forward to bringing it to my friends who aren't too keen on cutthroat cube experiences but might be lured into trying Algomancy by the shiny new cards and effects. It's going to be awesome!
Do you hate Magic now?
No, Im just having more fun with Algomancy
Any chance you would post more cube content? 😢
I'm gonna start posting Algomancy cube content once the digital client is ready
If only the artwork wasn't AI-generated I'd be all over this game. I know you say you used a custom model only trained on open-source art, I know you've made it fit thematically within the flavor of the game and I know you've been using AI since long before it became the sort of issue it is now, but I would still feel so uneasy playing a game where all the artwork was made by a computer :[
That's totally understandable. I do plan on hiring artists in the future when I can hopefully actually afford it, so keep a look out for that time I suppose!
@@CalebGannon That would be fantastic. This attitude, more than anything, gives me a lot of confidence that I'll be able to enjoy this game sometime in the future. Here's hoping it gets to that point :]
Wait he’s actually back, you are legendary Caleb!
hey thank you! :)
Ain't no Pringles here
I kept the foil samples outside in the garage unsleeved during the entire monsoon season and they still didn't Pringle lol
Yay art and games
W000000 games!
@CalebGannon At 12:11 should you really take 4 damage? The unit you blocked with was recalled, but blockers were already declared?
You're right, I must've missed that when I was doing the overlay
I don't know if I like Recall as a card name if it's also a mechanic name. The fact that Recall the card has two separate effects when other cards that use recall the mechanic only have one seems slightly unintuitive. The creature following has Recall capitalized in its effect text, does this mean its effect is the same as Recall the card which includes two life-loss or just a bounce to hand? I might be too high, but I think this makes sense.
Yeah that's an interesting point to bring up, I could see us wanting to rename that card in the future. During development it started out being exactly the recall effect which made sense, but later on I added the life loss to prevent it from being too strong when looped and lean water into more tempo than control. Probably should have changed the name then but it wasn't something that crossed my mind
I'm your biggest fan
Thank you! 😊
Apples and bananasssss
This is so amazing, but I can't watch any of these. I'll be playing the game blind with my brother but still want to support ❤ Can't wait for October/November
Oh that's gonna be fun. Thanks for the support and I hope you have a great time playing it blind :)
That‘s a nice table
W00t. Where is the tubby dragon? Good stuff dude. Pretty looking game.
Thank you! :) and don't worry, there are a ton of funny dudes :) look at bubb for example haha. No dragons yet though because dragons aren't a unit type in the game at the moment
@@CalebGannon I smiled when I saw Bubb for sure
At the end there, wasn't there a creature that was augmented with Recall that would cause Caleb to lose life when it despawned? Is despawn only when it returns to hand?
That creature died from the fireball and I used flame shield to counter its trigger so I didn't die.
cant wait! i still remember you teaching me on tabletop❤
Hey awesome! :) Glad I was able to play with you.
LOOKING GAS!
Thank you! :)
So hyped!! 🎉🎉🎉
Ayyy thank you sir :)
(1:36) this also made me giggle <1 mana 1/1> -This is pretty late game card.
It really is though. Because of the graft mechanic that card sorta acts like past in flames, allowing you to rebuy used effects that have graft on them.
So if not for Flame Shield (27:07) then dying Bloated Manablub with graft (24:46) would deal 3+2 = 5 damge and win the game?
Yeah. I didn't know it at the time because we tracked life incorrectly during the game but I was real close to dying lol
That was a great game to showcase constructed. Some clarifications for anyone who is interested: At 10:10 he said 'combat damage' but its ANY damage once per turn. This was relevant later with the channel through. In the combat at 23:30 there is a small short cut regarding the life lost. Jenna is taking 7 combat damage, then the ability of her dying creature goes on the stack and forces both players to recall a unit and lose 2 life.
Also please do a normal gameplay in this format 🙏
Definitely will :)
Is there a video about the strategy / essence behind each color?
Not yet, but that's a good idea for a future video that I'll probably make!
Could this be the very first recorded Thoughtseize bug in Algomancy? 15:30
Yes it absolutely is lol
Hey this is what I was looking for, excited to see more games lined up with more decks, Although a question I have for constructed is do you see the card rotation being an issue? Most card games start with small hands, and magic starts with 7 + dead land draws. Do you feel consistency will be an issue? While I love having that amount of choice I feel like it could cause a problem when a game like this gets "solved". As an out of box experience you can't add or balance cards, but also I don't know if I should view this more as a board game and interested to hear your thoughts. (Also thank you for putting the cards on screen, it's hard to read with the sleeve glare☺)
There are a couple things here: First, I will likely be making more cards for the game. The game is absolutely playable out of the box in the limited format, but I understand that in constructed people will want things to change over time. Second, because the cards are so cheap/easy to acquire we're gonna have a rotating banlist where the top percentage of cards will cycle in and out of legality (based on winrate, usage % and player feedback). So the meta should stay fresh basically always just from that. (The formats are gonna be similar to how Pokemon showdown does tiers with Ubers, OU, UU, etc. being sorta like our version of legacy, modern, pauper etc but they'll be based on card usage rather than when it was released or rarity). And lastly, the goal with the design of Algomancy for constructed is to balance it through card designs and the game mechanics rather than variance (which is what most other card games do). Basically, the game is intended to function even if both players could demonic tutor every card every turn. This way, it's more about how players navigate the games and their sequencing and skill, rather than just "did I draw my combo pieces". So ideally, even if we have a "solved" meta, that wouldn't make for stagnant gameplay since different sequences made by players would lead to vastly different games. Sorta how chess manages to be interesting even though all games use exactly the same pieces.
@@CalebGannon Thanks for the detailed answer! The main issue for me was consistency making the best decks better and worse deck not that much better, but I think the banlist is a nice solution and generally if something becomes a problem I am sure you'll be hearing about it hehe I like the idea baking consistency into the DNA of the cards and game, I have reservations of what that could form in terms of play patterns but you clearly thought it out and I need to see and play a lottt more before I act like I know anything Love the project overall, and I can't wait to see more of it and hopefully play soon! Card design is a huge passion of mine and it's really lovely hearing your process and seeing what was made 🥰
@@aliceoftheabyssyeah I suppose we'll find out once the game is released if these ideas play out how I planned for them to :) Interestingly, I originally didn't even plan for constructed to be part of this game, but in testing I've actually been enjoying constructed more than limited (which surprised me because I don't really like constructed in MTG). The way I can describe it is constructed Algomancy feels more like a fighting game (like super smash brothers or Tekken) and less like gambling. Also if there is a major problem, we can also always adjust the constructed rules to make decks bigger or remove the drafting aspect of constructed.
The Doctor! Love the foiling
Oh boy I'm gonna have fun with this tomorrow!
😊
Long time fan, can't wait for a diginal client. I love the resource system that you went with in the game.
Thank you! Yeah it took a long time to get here, but I'm very happy with it as well.
Caleb Gannon MTG, nice video it was really good
Hey, thanks!
It'd be pretty cool to see her pilot the other deck, though it might be a tad complicated for her at the moment haha. Game looks sweet!
Yeah, I've got some other friends lined up with more complicated decks. This video was mostly just to demonstrate the turn structure with some basic interaction
Cannot wait for my copy to come in. Thanks for doing these videos and the short spotlights.
Glad you like them!
I'm your biggest fan
Awesome
Thank you!
Man this game looks so sick, unfortunately while it is the kind of game I would absolutely love, there is no way in the universe I could convince anybody I know to play it with me, the amount of decision paralisis every turn from drawing 2 + rummaging 2 + deciding which card to pitch for lands + the complexity of the formation combat system would seem completely insane for anyone who doesn't already have hundreds of hours playing a game like magic at a somewhat high level. Crossing my fingers for a digital version I can play online at some point even if I know it's probably very unlikely.
I'm working on a digital client and should have a playable demo soon. You can wishlist it on steam right now actually store.steampowered.com/app/2948720/Algomancy/ As for decision paralysis, we didn't see that as much of a problem in testing with people from a wide range of backgrounds, largely because each player does that action at the same time so nobody is waiting around for them. It feels kinda like drafting in MTG in that sense.
@@CalebGannon oh wow that's awesome thanks, very excited for that!
Put your steam id, I want to play digital too XD
