Oak Puzzle Box
Styled roughly after an old campaign trunk, this puzzle box hides a variety of different sequential puzzles for the owner to solve, along with a few personalized objects hidden inside. Made with three different kinds of Oak; English brown for the exterior, dark Fumed White for the base and darker details and Quartersawn White for the drawers. A very fun project to create in a totally different style than most of my other pieces.

Making the Spinning Puzzle Cabinet

So here's number 2 in what I don't think will be a series of behind the scenes videos on past pieces, mostly because I have pretty limited content for those pieces (not realizing that one day I'd want to make a video about making them). This one is on the Spinning Puzzle Cabinet from 3 years ago. The first spinning piece I made and quite an engineering challenge to get working properly. Hope yo...

Hopefully everyone enjoys seeing what goes into making these relatively complex pieces of furniture. Also the first voice over video I've done so let me know what you think of this one and I'll post a few more of other pieces. There's lots of r...

It's been too long since I posted a video of a new puzzle piece so here's one from early last year. Due to the pandemic it's shot with my iphone and isn't remotely the quality my video and photo guys produce. I added some in-progress clips showing a bit of the box coming together starting about halfway through the video. This box was built for an overseas client as a wedding ring presentation p...

Where do you buy this
Great work - carrying on this 18th century tradition of puzzle woodwork furnishings. My only suggestion - and it is entirely the kind you'd expect from an art historian - is that your inlay looks a little too faux. Or is it paint? (I can't say for sure through a video though I am sure it would be obvious in person.). It looks a little indecisively between Arts and Crafts and japonism. Is it a William Morris style of leaf and vegetal motif you're going for? I think you're right to have some decorative features like those. But why not push your obvious ingenuity and craftsmanship a bit further? The appeal of your work is engaging with this old European tradition of the puzzle furniture. Your woodworking style is very much post-Arts and Crafts movement. Perhaps some decorative designs that declare that your work is very much updating the puzzle cabinet to a contemporary style? Just a thought from a fan.
If you ever find a way to industrialize the process and make it cheaper please do. Some of us will never even be in the same room with a Roentgen. These things have been a only the wealthy people for as long as they've been done.
Hello! Congratulations on your work! I'm a fan! I would also like, one day, to make a piece of furniture with secret compartments, but I can't find any resources to learn this art. Do you know of any? How did you learn all this? Thank you for all! (Sorry for my bad english, I’m french! 😂)
That’s so clever I’m amazed at how intricate it is. I’d love something like that it’s fantastic, well done.. ps if your getting rid thinking of me….. lol 🌹
I wish that you had spent some time on the marquetry i.e. wood species etc.
If there was a God, and if he were a Woodworker...
It is beyond me how someone can be so creative, talented, and brilliant! Beautiful craftsmanship.
A genuine art piece, worth a lifelong possession, worth as a generational heirloom, a piece of beauty.
Unbelievably amazing! This satisfies the adult me with an appreciation of fine woodworking and craftsmanship, with a love of art, all at the same time as the child in me who grew up loving the puzzle/riddle solving Indiana jones type excitement. Great job! It’s still almost impossible for me to accept there’s artist like yourself capable of creating such astounding pieces. Sincerely, Ty
Absolutely outstanding! A joy to watch your woodworking videos. Always inspiring and I admire your imagination to keep coming up with great ideas and sharing your knowledge. Well done. One Handed Maker - Australia
👍👍👍
This is so cool, I have made a couple puzzle boxes however they are all very effected by humidity and sometimes sliding components get stuck. How do you make such tight drawers even after staining them?
Sorry for the late reply. All the external parts are veneered construction so there's no real wood movement to content with there. Solid drawers in a veneered carcase should move smoothly given enough initial clearance, if you're making solid drawers in a solid carcase you'll need more space for seasonal expansion and contraction.
@@CTFineFurniture Oh wow, the veneer looks so good. After seeing pictures of the finished puzzle desk you've inspired me to make my own puzzle desk. I am beginning the internal mechanics and it's just incredible that you can make such a beautiful piece of furniture of that scale and complexity. I hope I can make a desk that looks even half as good as yours.
Awe inspiring! Beautiful craftsmanship
So when did you guys finish the desk?
Jewelry box.
I actually want this as a place to keep my make up and jewellery that I use exclusively for romance, which I have been gifted as romantic gestures.
me: *hears a strange noise in the house* "Just a moment!"
Holy smokes! What a beautiful and amazing piece of art/engineering!
It's a beut jon
The desk in my head is a curled up dragon done in a warm caramel wood tone and red and black accents with hidden puzzles (like the desktop having a rotating seal that hides an interior well) that lead to tiny miniature dragon statues. Sadly, I don't have the income for such things. 😊
Beautiful. I'd have asked for black pulls myself. Still, quite lovely.
Amazing work, you truly have a gift
I really hope one day I could own something of yours. You are a true craftsman
Bonkers.
Just smiling the whole time watching. Always amaze with your craftsmanship. Beautiful. How's that desk puzzle?
I love seeing the mechanisms behind the magic. I'm in awe of this in so many ways. Love it!
Amazing
Just amazing how every little detail has been so well thought through. It would be great to be able to purchase this design so I could have some fun building one.
Another beautiful piece! 👍👍

Can you actually put things in those drawers
Of course, there were actually a few specific things hidden in the drawers for the client, just nothing very large.
