How to Bear Grease a Drum

The secret to keeping the membrane of your hand drum or powwow drum soft and crack free for years, is Bear Grease!! Rub it into the hide like a massage oil. Wait 15 minutes or so then wipe off the excess with a towel. Your drum will be in a happy place for the next 4 or 5 months to come.

Is it safe for a real baby though?
Absolutely. Indigenous people have been using Cradleboard for a very long time and we made our safe to hold a baby. We shook the heck out of the doll....and it didn't fall out.

We ordered a drum a while ago and we’re just now putting it together. Did you say that sheep wool was supposed to come with the kit for the drum stick.
Everything else is beautiful. I was just wondering because I got some that I bought that I could put in it.
@@timothykoopjr8702 Hi Timothy, our adult drum kits (12" and larger) should have come with wool to stuff the stick. The kids versions do not. If we forgot to include the wool, send us an email, we send some to ya! Thanks!

Hello, thank you so much for the awesome tutorial! I recently got my very first hand drum. I’ve applied bear grease to it for the first time this evening. I’m wondering if I should leave it out in the open ina safe spot before wraping it back up in the leather I was given to wrap it in, or if I should just wrap it up right away. I want to keep it for as long as possible ❤️
Hi thanks for reaching out! You can leave it out for a while, no problem. But if you have wiped off the excess bear grease.. then wrapping it up right away is great.

Hey there, thanks for the comment! We've made about ten 40" drums... but our most popular sizes are between 28" and 32". Easier to transport in a vehicle and comfortably seats 8-12 singers!

No sound… what is the material you are using?
I've been using mink oil since I can't get bear grease and I have it for my other leather stuff but is that sweet almond oil stuff better than the mink for the drum? Will have to try it out.
I have never used mink oil. The secret to both bear grease and sweet almond oil is that they are very light oils with no residue or stickiness.

Apparently you fill it with quartz fragments and when you shake the rattle, it emits light.
After stuffing the rattle with the stuffing, it looks dirty. 1) How can I clean it before painting? 2) Also, what paints to you recommend to use and 3) should I apply a coat of polyurethane on before or after? Thank You!
