I will show you how I removed the ESL and ignition switch from the dash of a 2007 C230 Mercedes without removing the steering wheel and the column. This is a very common problem with these cars. If your key is NOT turning on the ignition switch most likely it is the ignition switch or the electronic steering lock (ESL). In my case it was the ESL only.

TIPS AND TRICKS for changing out the Camshaft position Magnets or Camshaft Solenoids on a 2007 Mercedes Benz C230 sport.
Before I started this job I had these codes:
P.0730
P0303
P0170
P0173
P0300
P0306
P0022
I also changed out all the spark plugs as well as coils.
This in addition to replacing the coils/plugs cleared all the codes except P0170 & P0173.
I am waiting for a Bosch MAF sensor to arrive to see if this clears those codes.

why did you have to remove the center consule? when the esl in on the steering colume?
Very helpful I have a 1999 e320 doing the same thing.. and No One seems to have the k owledge about this
Wasted a sh*t ton of money on what should have been a simple ESL fix. Get a ESL from the junkyard. Move your control board over to the new lock. Done.

Absolutely no way I'm going to replace it. Bypass it with an emulator altogether so you never get stranded out again.

Would a e430 be the same way I'm having the exact same problem ordered new 300$ fob and nuthing not even a lil bit won't turn or anything

It came with a reprogramming key. Hope this helps!
Many people seen on CZcams can synchronize all 3 components if you remove them and send them in or get lucky with a locksmith, only 1 I know is in Dallas.

Do you have to program the new ignition switch to the steering lock? I changed the ignition switch on my c230 but still the key won't turn.
Yes you do.
Get rid of the steering lock and install emulator. You can buy it on Ebay, works fine.
Do you have a link to the emulator? Did you need to program it?
@@MRSIN187 I just went through replacing motor in ESL on w204. But I was looking on ebay and there are few sellers. Look for Luxe Electrical they seem to have excellent reviews on Yelp not just ebay since its actual shop but they charge 300$. Cheapest for w204 one is 166$ on ebay and has few positive reviews. Otherwise there is seller in Texas and Canada that has been confirmed via mbworld forum.
Just be sure the steering lock is unlocked, or remove it entirely. Don't want to risk the damn thing ever locking while driving down the road. Not that it could, but better safe that sorry! Naturally, if locked, you ain't going to steer it anyway!
@@58fins yeah I just connected it to side of steering column with zip ties lol that way even if it locks my steering wheel will not be locked I just made sure its out of the way and secure, I added some closed cell foam to prevent any vibrations as well
I need to take the steering lock off but I certainly don’t want to tear it open like you did.
Well when you know your going to replace it, this is a way faster method then going the other route.

Hi great video, what kind of tool do you used to get the pin out? How did you remove it? I watched a lot videos but I think they were newest benz, are totally different to a 04, 07 C240 and is not that easy to get the ESL, even the steering column out, your video help me a lot thx.
Thank you very much for your response and feedback! I actually used a Dremel tool with a cutting wheel to cut the pins :) It requires laying on your back and looking up at the ignition lock on the steering column. I put some tin foil down on the floor of the car to protect the carpet from sparks as you cut. It doesn't take too long to cut them :)
not posible to get the esl off the colum removing just the ping without the drilling?? thnks!!
I think this is the only way to remove it unless you remove the steering column.
Hello there,hope u are well, i had the same problem with a C180 and was looking how to take this F*** pin off, I bought the whole starting kit to replace it, do you know if once the whole system be changed i will have to sync something? it should works?
I would only be guessing, but I would think if you bought the part from Mercedes it would be synced to your car. Sorry for the delay and hope your up and running. Stay safe!

No it's not that bad at all! Fun actually! There was no way I was going to pull the steering wheel off and do it that way. I'm Glad you got it working 👍. Did yours come with the temporary programming key?

I'm looking at a E500 with this issue. The key won't turn and the steering lock does not engage. Nice to know where to start looking.

Why not tell everyone that it didn't work? The new esl has to be programmed to the ignition and key.
