The Forever War part 5
The Forever War - Nick Bryant - 2024
America’s Unending Conflict with Itself
By: Nick Bryant
Narrated by: Nick Bryant
Publisher's Summary:
From the author of When America Stopped Being Great, an insightful and urgent reassessment of America’s past, present and future - as a country which is forever at war with itself.
The Forever War tells the story of how America’s extreme polarisation is 250 years in the making, and argues that the roots of its modern-day malaise are to be found in its troubled and unresolved past.
As we approach the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, the American experiment is failing. Division, mistrust and misinformation are now the country’s defining characteristics. The storming of the Capitol, the prosecution of Donald Trump and battles over gun rights and abortion raise the spectre of further political violence, and even the possibility of a second civil war.
Nick Bryant explains how the hate, divisiveness and paranoia we see today are in fact a core part of America’s story. Combining brilliant storytelling, historical research and first-hand reportage, Bryant argues that insurrections, massacres and civil disturbances should sadly not be seen as abnormalities; they are a part of the fabric of the history of America.
The compromises originally designed to hold the union together have never truly been resolved and today, a country that once looked so confidently to the future has become captive to its contentious past.
Critic reviews
'Bryant is a genuine rarity, a Brit who understands America.' (Washington Post)
'America’s story rewritten with remarkable authority and affection. Unflinching and insightful. A great achievement.' (Lyse Doucet, the BBC's Chief International Correspondent)
'Nick Bryant combines wisdom with humour - this is a must-read book for all those who love America and want it to be healed.' (Justin Webb, presenter of the BBC's Today programme and Americast)
'Crackling with wit, historical understanding and wry insight, Nick Bryant’s brilliant new book demonstrates that the divisions which roil contemporary America are rooted in its deep history. The America that emerges from these pages is one defined by paradox: inspiring and dark, enlightened and violent, open and viciously exclusionary, a nation of effervescent ingenuity hampered by unreformable institutions. Bryant writes with the familiarity of a journalist who has spent decades living in the US but also with the outsider’s capacity for detachment and irony. This is the must-read book about America for 2024.' (Professor Adam Smith, Director of the Rothermere American Institute, University of Oxford)
'A sharp study of the endemic battles that have blighted the U.S. throughout its existence. A perceptive look at America’s unresolved history.' (Kirkus Reviews)

Totally understand. I'm now subscribed. Really like the content. Good luck. 😊
Must be a really old book. Republicans gave up democracy bringing in 2010. Now they are a party of hate and lies.
The troops shown appear to be Soviet. Is this correct?
I haven't said what I thought but the mediators have done a great job and I hope they continue to be bipartisan

I assume zombies will show up at some time. I'm waiting patiently.
Excellent. More please.
Interesting comments. I'm completely invested in this story. I find it interesting and not untrue. Kinda sad that others find it politically impolite. 😂
This one might be too much
Fema Took 6 Days to Get Water To The Astro dome What Was it 6 miles Away?
Fema is strange , how much ammunition did they buy up a few years back ?
I forced myself to finish part 1, hoping it'll get more interesting... but 5min into part 2, it's the same pointless, overly descriptive, slow pace boring writing with a bunch of political blah blah blah. No thanks.
Blah
Great upload, I thoroughly enjoyed it 👍🥇
Thank you 👍
When I found this I was delighted to hear some more "World War Z" style stories. But I barely finished first 2 parts. The author is just so painfully cringe. Brooks was miles better.... I mean it's not even in the same category. Anyway... I had enough... I'll be dropping this now. Just hat to vent before I do.
58:00 haha I thought i was listning to a zombie story Turns out its a political speech of a old leftist politician 😅😅
"We saw the left, the true principled left." Okay, now that's just funny. The left has been out of their minds, since before Y2K.
Am I the only one who is confused why the title mention Pacific operations, while the preview shows Soviet infantrimen?
The CDC does indeed have some actual plans for such an occurrence.
Very well written, plotted and very well narrated! I highly recommend this, makes great listening. The author wrote this book in the style of Max Brooks "World War Z". The author created a comprehensive, well thought out story. However it is different from Max Brooks' work in that it has a tone that is very much more pessimistic and cynical than the book "World War Z". In Max Brook's book, you found yourself rooting for struggling humanity to survive. But here, you find yourself wishing the zombies had won. I absolutely agree with the author's observation that he is surprised that no other books like "World War Z" followed it's publication. The book was just so good, i, like the author of this work, expected there to be a flood of similar works to hit the market. But they never did. Maybe Brook's work was just so good that no one wanted to try copying it. This video is very well worth listening to. It is well written, with a good plot, interesting characters and a pace that keeps you listening eagerly. While having written a good homage to Max Brook's book, the author has written a story that is individual and very much his own. Many thanks to the site for posting this! I highly recommend it to anyone!
❤❤❤❤❤
Nvm. The book describes it correctly further down the initial mention. Just for those curious. Yes. ConPlan 8888 does exist. It was created as an exercise by a team of officers tested for how they would handle an out of whack scenario. So no. It is not a sign of us military leadership anticipating a zombie apocalypse, but it is kept just in case.
Oh I have this book in hardcover. All I loved it back in 2002
I always complain about World War Z, so it might sound surprising that I actually liked the book. And all my negativity is because I firmly believe it would have benefited from scraping a lot of "Outside US" chapters, especially those in nations seen as "adversarial to America". Because they don't add value to the story and only pedal misinformed stereotypes. When the Author said they wanted to pick up the baton after Max Brooks, I hoped he would avoid this pitfalls. Well... Looks like I was wrong.

Whole heartily agree with the forward. I too have been waiting for so very long for this. Thank you
