Christopher Germer on Mindful Self-Compassion
Have you noticed how easy it is to judge oneself when things go wrong, instead of becoming your own best friend? Mindful self-compassion can help us to be kinder to ourselves just in those moments that we need it the most.
Research shows that mindful self-compassion has a number of effects, including:
* Emotional wellbeing
* Coping with life challenges
* Lower levels of stress, anxiety and depression
* Higher levels of life satisfaction, happiness and gratitude
* Healthy lifestyle habits such as diet and exercise
* More satisfying personal relationships
In this video, the pioneer Christopher Germer discusses the three main components of Mindful self-compassion:
1. Mindfulness
2. Common humanity
3. Self-Kindness
He also tells us why it is important to not only be mindful of your own experience, but also turn this loving awareness to the experiencer, i.e. yourself.
Christopher Germer is a clinical psychologist, meditation teacher, co-founder of the Center for Mindful Self-Compassion and the author of bestselling books, such as "The Mindful Path to Self-Compassion". Together with Kristin Neff, he has created an eight-week program in Mindful Self-Compassion that has been spread throughout the world.
This film runs 23:46, and is produced by Johan Bergstad, psychologist, public speaker and founder of Mindfulness Academy Scandinavia: mindfulnessacademy.com.

    This has helped me a lot. My friends when struggling a bit all end up responding to the same statements of mine, "I have an oppressive mind". But my friends do not sign up. That is up to them. The search is ongoing for them. My life is less stressful and a bit more productive. Really the things I thought were hardships are not so bad. In fact I have had a lot of luck and can make a lot more luck for myself.

    I needed other-compassion to heal from my self-loathing/shame from extensive childhood abuse, and found that in my 12-step meetings where "protection and care" (i did not get in childhood) were unspoken but freely given, over, and over again. As we say in recovery: "can't do it by myself". Stress R Us

    Amazing to realize how I felt so unconfortable in paying attention to breathing, because I have always thought I was breathing "wrong" , too shallow and that would bring me even more thoughts of fear and the need of doing something to breath "better" , always believing there is something wrong with me. The eternal need of doing...to become better than you already are! Thank you for this amazing video❤🙏

    "Acceptance is recognizing how things actually are in relationship to everything else, in relation to what's more important. Not recognize it, not see it is just being unconscious. If you tell someone with a serious medical condition that causing chronic pain to accept pain they may not be able to do that ( want to do that). If you say, you must accept pain, with just create more pain. What acceptance really means is recognizing, this is how it is now and finding some way to have a wise relationship to it, not struggle with it, but it doesn't mean becoming a passive victim, it doesn't mean passive resignation. No, it means a silent answer "Can I be in some relationship with it". Most of the time when you are in pain the impulse is to run away from it, turn away, block it out, whatever is required. So, people who are in chronic pain turn toward it, they put out a welcome matt and say, "Ok, as long as you are here let's have a conversation. Let's feel each other, let's see how the relationship might be". When chronic pain patients do that they surprisingly find room to be in a relationship with that experience. Before, all they wanted to run away from that experience, cut it out, shut down completely or kill themselves. And now all of a sudden there is room. As soon there is a room that is acceptance. Will it grow over time? Who knows. But will take it moment by moment. And as a rule, it does grow over time. But you can't tell someone to accept anything. You have to come to that themselves so that the mindfulness practice becomes an adventure." Jon Kabat-Zinn ( Made this transcript for my migraine journal. All the best to you who is reading this text now)
