the Manifesto for the City of Capital
This is a Film to introduce my Master's thesis proposal.
The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau bridge was conceived for logistics use 36 years ago. However, only just last year in October 2018, the bridge has finally inaugurated. During this time, the whole anatomy of the Greater Bay Area has changed, thus leading to this huge infrastructure deemed the biggest white elephant.
The thesis is to create the fourth city on the HZMB, a City of Capital.The bridge is 55km long and 120 billion yuan has been spent onto it. However, not many people can utilize the bridge as of now and that it will soon be obsolete by its neighboring infrastructures once they are inaugurated.
So what can we do with an upcoming obsolete infrastructure that connects to 3 cities of different governments, while they are losing it’s position in this highly competitive economic Greater Bay Area?
The thesis is to create a new civic corridor by utilizing the volume of spaces within the zone of the bridge, that acts as an extension to the city’s production and consumption industry to allows a hybrid of functions to happen.
The aim is give another life to the long-stretched infrastructure that is dying since birth of it’s functionalist intent. Therefore by programming the bridge, it attempts to act as a social condenser thus bring a greater economic output between the 3 cities onto the concrete skeleton.
This speculative thesis contributes to the discipline of architecture by questioning what the civic activities can achieve in the 21st century, where functioning parts of the cities of different governing bodies starts to connect, that is shown through a series of scenarios.

Hi, thank you. But did you mention the residential and commercial complex became known because the movie Transformer : Age of Extinction 變形金剛 ? It was named the monster building then. I have been around for over 20 years and before that I never heard people calling it the monster buildings.

Depressing and noisy place.
When i do visit, i don't care for the typical tourists spots. I'm sure they're fine an all. But i rather take the old, gritty, local environment, over the fancy overpriced, modern stuff anyday.
This was a very interesting documentary on these residential buildings of an era in a unique and special city's history. And, it's a living history, of course. Given the date of the film, I couldn't shake my anxiety of the very real public health challenges that level of density must be presenting during this time of Covid and I so hope it hasn't brought tragedy to too many residents and their loved ones so far. Also, given the recent political turmoil and stresses of the CCP's induced changes one can only imagine how things like housing might be impacted as the city's population might be trying to adjust this way or that as a result. Every city is always dynamic throughout history but Hong Kong seems to have been on steroids for decades. Thanks for this interesting snapshot of a neighborhood few people would have covered except in photographs.
