I'm a proud Vietnam/Draft resistor. Congratulations to the "Three Draftees" who were nothing more than chumps and pawns for allowing themselves to participate in Vietnam. Let's just say they were assholes who didn't have the brains to figure out the total dysfunction of Americans in Vietnam. Maybe these "Draftees" were also cowards b/c they let the US Government bully them with consequences if they did not go. One thing they were not....heroes. They were survivors of an American disgrace and disaster.

Excellent presentation. Looks very professional. I am starting with episode 7 as I found it while being sure how to spell Enari. We could have easily stumbled on each other. I got there sometime in early 1967 and left in mid-1968. Too bad we missed each other. I trained as a wheeled vehicle mechanic, but they needed a track mechanic so with an eraser and pencil I changed MOS. It is nice to see you worked with radios as I was an RTO for the special reactionary team. Also got a tad of use with more fancy stuff in the back of an M11AI. 1/10th Cav, 4th inf. Anyway, I enjoyed your presentation. Thank you for taking the time.

I got to Dau Tieng March 68 right after Tet. That French building was the HQ for 2/77 Arty. We were sent to Saigon because it was thought the VC woukd attack that area during the Fourth of July. We were told we would be setup in Airforce barracks. This meant flush toilets, showers with hot water and real beds. No, we were bivouacked along an air strip on Ton Son Neut airbase. We dug a latrine only to use wet TP and being attacked by a zillion mosquitos. Nothing happened in Saigon. As an RTT I had to go back to DT to pick up a working radio. I woke up around 2am to seeing flares theu the upper screen in the hooch. We were hit that night. Two members oh HQ Batterywere lost.

I arrived in Nam March 1968. As an RTT operator I had it made in Dau Tieng. Dodging mortar and rockets now and then was the sport of us dumb kids. But we had the above ground French swimming pool, the shops and snack bar below and the place where we coukd buy those awful Vietnam guitars. I wished I would have brought one back though. I did score a Gibson J-45 via the black market, that I did bring back. Interesting time. I never have understood why we were there though. I have my thoughts but I keep ‘em to myself. There were quite a few French building at Dau Tieng. My unit, 2/77 Artillery’s headquarters were in one of the two story buildings. Behind it was a non functioning fountain. One day a friend brought in two ducks and two chickens he bought in the village. The battalion colonel saw them and commented how he was a Iowa farm boy. He then ordered the water truck guys to fill the fountain for the ducks. We built a gazebo over it, made tiki torches out of tent poles, beer cans, sand and gasoline. We lit them once then figured we didn’t need to give ‘Charlie’ a good target. I remember a large single floor building. I was just walking around and saw some kids practicing karate. I walked in and I couldn’t believe my eyes. There was a big band in baby blue blazers playing to no one. I remember the guitarist had a light blue Fender Stratocaster and played incredible Asian licks. It was quite a surreal experience.

Amazing video... thank you! This caught me up on so much and all the amazing people who paved the way in New England Surfing. Very odd to not know any of the people in this video because I started in 1964 but wasn't in the contest scene until 67' when I surfed contests all over New England and knew all the players. Of course I knew the Hobie Shop in Gansett and Cape Cod but just as a grom, first learning the ropes. Started in summer of 65 when I bought a beat up old Newporter Pop-out from Larry and Scoot Mckinney at Surf City Rental stand in Orleans, Cape Cod I bought my first new board from the Hobie Shop in Orleans Ma summer of 66' They threw my Newporter out the back door and I went out the front with an awesome yellow and blue Hobie Noserider! My era was a bit later when some of the folks in this video had come into their own like Randy Radke and Bill Spicer and the Will Jacobs Team was full speed ahead. I was on the team at Jasper's Surf Shop a Dewey Weber Shop during the Short-Board Revolution... very exciting times!! Summers were spent traveling the ESA Contest circuit all over New England and meeting lifelong friends from every state. In fact I spent last night with Dave Levy and some of the Narragansett crew at a paddle-out for my buddy and life long ripper Jay Todd. The amazing thing is, not much has changed in my life... at 73, I signed a multi year contract as a Pro Surfer for Sunova Surfboards.... riding and promoting the SUP line. I travel the world, surfing, living, learning and grateful for every day! I now get paid to surf.... hey Ma, I told you!!!! 🤣 If you want to look into the surf life of a 74 year old Grom... click my name and look around my CZcams channel..... surfing is as alive as ever!
