I'm late, but I really appreciate this more nuanced look into TMA that doesn't seek to wring the metaphorical blood of concrete and clean-cut answers from a stone that was never intended to provide them. I think sometimes the fandom at large (perhaps due to it skewing pretty young?) tends to make something out of this story and its characters that's more digestible and comfortable, at the price of defanging the work as a whole (thinking of how often I look at fan works and find character relationships which are overall hostile, negative and unpleasant for the majority or entirety of the story somehow translated into a cookie-cutter "lovely and supportive found family" trope). Also, to the comments: y'all know "every me is me, we are the mask and the wearer" is from a Tumblr post right, lol

I think its funny that super paper mario has literally nothing to do with paper. Not a single paper joke in the entire game unlike any other part of the series

Something I love about TMA, is actually just the voice cast, because for the first few seasons, and ONCE in the last one; the voice of minor and major characters are straight up people that Jonny: A: Has previously Worked With Before B: Is Besties With C: Both of the Above And my favorite D: STRAIGHT UP HIS PARENTS Which I was reminded of in that specific clip of “Like Ants” because, the first time I hear this guy’s voice, I went through a bit of whiplash, because that’s Tim, not Tim stoker mind you, no, no no no, GUNPOWDER Anyways y’all should listen to The Mechanism, Jonny Sims has a wonderful singing voice

I can’t believe it took me until the second Lonely segment to realize that this was Martin (I thought he was Georgie), I thought it was Georgie and Jon’s breakup and that Martin was going to show up after but then I got to that part and was like “oh that *is* Martin”

I'm gonna be real ur not exactly the right person to talk about this. Mario has loads of appeal and despite its simplicity there's actually so much transformative material for the series in general than what you even discussed here. I'm gonna say rn I disagree with you entirely on everything you talked about. This was mostly just you sucking your game's cock and doing such minimal amount of research on the Mario franchise. Like, you REALLY don't know how franchises work at all and Mario in general especially has such a very strong fandom with tons to engage in.

I think the thing about more esoteric work better resonating with their audiences is absolutely a result of a lack of broad audience appeal. It's the embodiment of the phrase "jack of all trades, master of none", if you make art that's more geared towards a specific demographic, that demographic is going to notice, and take more interest, as the art resonates with them personally.

Ok the work put into this is incredible. The line "good easily fades" could describe any of several characters becoming more violent or amoral over the series, and we got spotlight on Gertrude, who desperately stopped the rituals even if she has to sacrifice people like Micheal. I kinda wish we see her or someone else's "good fading away" in over multiple stillframes during the line itself though. The Undertale amv for this same song did a really good job of that

I find the Mike inclusion oddly funny next to characters who actually speak in more than one episode, but I am NOT complaining :)

One of the themes that I found both brilliant and frustrating was Basira's favouritism and making of excuses for Daisy. Jon outright says that he and Daisy are the same, they've both been influenced by the Powers, but a lot of what they've done was of their own free will. But Basira can't accept that and says that the Hunt "made" Daisy do those things, when it didn't influence Daisy any more than the Eye influences Jon. And when Basira says Daisy is resisting the Hunt, Jon gives up. Not because Basira has a point, but because Jon knows that by resisting her patron Daisy is slowly dying, and he can't bring himself to tell Basira. I also loved the conflict during Season 5, where Martin and Basira keep pushing back against Jon's very nihilistic view of the post-Change world, saying there must be something they can do. What they don't understand is this world doesn't operate on the same logic and rules as the old one. In the world of fear, there is no "good", no "justice", no "helping", there is only the many forms of suffering. Jon puts it very well, that they may not be suffering in the Domains, instead their suffering is the knowledge that everyone else is suffering and they not only can't stop it, but are complicit as they feed the Eye with their experiences. Anyone who isn't in a Domain automatically suffers in a very Eye-centric way.

This is exactly the point I keep realizing: people miss the era of talk shows like Dick Cavett, where people actually talked to each other rather than engage with random distractions and games---but that era CONTINUES to exist, in the form of podcasts. Same thing with Paper Mario. Games like TTYD or SPM CONTINUE to exist, in the form of indie games. I understand that people WANT Mario to have that level of emotional storytelling and quirkiness, but it's not so far off to say that a lot of indie games are influenced by the atmosphere / emotions of IPs that can no longer make those bizarre, idiosyncratic stories anymore. If Nintendo isn't allowing Mario (rather you) from experiencing deeply emotional works, then go ahead and search for that feeling outside of Nintendo. You'll probably enjoy it. Some quick (though perhaps obvious) recommendations that capture that kind of bizarre yet emotional quality: Undertale, OMORI, OneShot
