Building a Big Wooden Tent (aka A HOUSE) in the Maine Woods
zhlédnutí 868Před rokem
Welcome to the visual story of how we built a wooden tent on the land of the Waukegan People of the Algonquin Nation. We built on the land of the flying squirrel, the land of the owl and the rabbit, the coyote and the red squirrel, the spider and the wasp. This is the land of the tree frog, and the red bellied salamander, and we never forget the mosquito, the tick and the black fly. The primary...

Much of the design of our workshop was determined by what we were able to mill up from the trees we dropped to clear the land. This large spruce provided the opportunity for a 10 foot wide barn door because the size allowed the span. And we had no crane on site. I am always astonished at the crazy things that people can accomplish on the edge of capacity.
Just watch this before you decide to DIY a slab.

I think I can DIY ANYTHING. Then I do it, and sometimes it goes fine (window installation) and sometimes it's a nightmare (that foundation). It is very hard to 'know your limits' when you haven't done something before. AND the concrete contractor blew me off for the foundation so I HAD TO DIY. I left to get something while this dude was jamming on the slab and I should have stayed- so, stay. Ok...

    Did the blowout happen when you vibrated the concrete as it was being poured? Could you end up reinforcing the bottom of all the forms all the way around, or did the blowout happen later on after everything was poured? I'm using threaded rod every 16 in vertically and horizontally to pour a 6 ft wall. Just wanted a little more information and details about the blowout and what let go first and at what time. Sometimes when people vibrate the concrete for too long it starts to send shock waves through the concrete therefore causing a blowout further down the line.

    • @LynnStone
      @LynnStone Před 3 lety

      Oh gosh sorry I am so slow to respond! The blowout happened as the concrete was being poured.If your threaded rod goes all the way through your form on both sides of course you will be fine. Plus? it re-enforces the concrete. Minus? It will start to rust and channel that process into your concrete, causing spalling. We put a adhesive based rubber sealant sheeting where our concrete meets the dirt when we filled it back in. We probably sprayed galvanizing spraypaint on the threaded rod because we are ignorant, paranoid overbuilders. How is your build going?

      Thanks that means so much to me. The house is gorgeous now, which is crazy since I drew it on graph paper with pencils! (no architect- that didn't suck!) And I really learned why they say the hardest part is 'getting out of the ground'. I also did all the below slab plumbing myself with help from a friend. We got some help with the slab pour thankfully. Had help framing with our own milled wood and a hand with the roof but we have done everything else ourselves, learning as we go on you tube, I hope I helped someone to insist on finding a pro to pour their concrete! But we got a better foundation doing it ourselves- we got WAY more rebar- tied correctly, than the local pros would have used. So that was good. Cheers mate!

    The duck canvas material used for both the Springbar and Kodiak Canvas tents are identical, and both will mold if left wet for long periods or if they are stored and packed up wet. Regardless of manufacturer, proper care of canvas is imperative to a long mold free life of your tent! Also, ensure that you follow the manufacturer's directions and properly season your canvas tent or it WILL leak! These tents cost way too much money to half ass their care.

    If you are ignorant enough to DIY your concrete frost wall ( I already told you not to do this, right? You heard me say this yes? You are calling a concrete contractor right now aren't you?) then you would be able to take the form off the wall, power wash that sucker and throw it on top of the concrete and have your self a house. Shoot- build your concrete form with two by sixes and you are golden. No money wasted. We used the fire treated wood to side a shed. It is lovely! We attached the boarding boards with finish nails for easy reuse. Some of the form was power nailed but much was screwed, so we could re-use the forms also. Wood and supplies came to about $1800 for the form and we will be re-using all of it elsewhere so no loss there.

  • @LynnStone
    @LynnStone Před 8 lety

    I also learned these simple things: in Maine the frost goes down 4 feet. A frost wall needs to be buried 4 feet under the surface to be a frost wall. It is desirable to do this for a two story building. One story can go on a thickened slab. A footer is 8 inches high and 16 inches wide. Ours contains two courses of rebar three inches up from the ground, this is code. The contractor that we did work with (yes of course we had help, we arent insane) said we used rebar to specs used in State jobs. I did this because I want to insure the building. So our work is built to the level of universal building code. Probably beyond that actually. Locally no one plants rebar every 4 feet in to the footer to tie the footer and the frost wall. No one ties rebar to that in the wall at every vertical foot either. No one sprays cold galvanizing spray paint on the rebar. (tests say its better than actual galvanizing). Code says 7 inch sill bolts every 4 feet with a bolt 12 inches or less from a sill end. We used 12 inch bolts because why not? Galvinized bolts can rot pressure treated wood so you can cold galvinize spray the part that goes in the concrete if you use ungalvanized. Or use galvy and put the threds thru the sill in a way that the galvy doesnt touch the wood (protect it). A PVC pipe would work to protect the PT from the galvy.

    Thanks for making this video and allowing me a tour of your enviable setup. I'm on the verge of ordering this exact tent and it's great to have a user review. It took a while to convince my wife to move away from cheaper nylon tents and splurge for a quality canvas tent. I prefer to spend my money on high quality products that last a lifetime and feature well thought out designs, especially ones produced in USA (or Canada). I'm sure we will love it, I haven' t heard one poor review from anyone who purchased a springbar tent. They seem universally admired. I agree with your decision to stick to the original vs Chinese made knockoffs. Just save a little longer and go with the real deal folks, small price extra for US jobs and pride of ownership. And this from a Canadian! PS, love Joshua Tree, it's like nowhere else on earth. I've had the pleasure of visiting the park a number of times but I'm always thinking about the next time I can return. I am planning to get this exact tent in a week. Do you still love it? How is it in water and how is the floor holding up? Thank you for a great review! I love the enclosure you sewed on. I sew, so you gave me some great ideas!

      Wendy D I LOVE my tent! Every part of it is holding up great. I have been overly anal about pegging it too tight and torn the floor when I erect the bars but Springbar sent me a repair kit and it is easy to fix and obviouslly my bad. So dont over tighten when you peg it down. This is by far the best tent for car campig (or glamping). Dont scrimp! the Kodiak fabric is lower quality and you will pay for that choice in the long run. Let us know how you like it!

    I love the awning! Wish you had a video of how you made it! If you ever make another, I would love if you made a video of the process. Thanks again!

      I just put up the tent and took accurate measurments and just sewed to fit. No curves- very simple!
