Why would he have to retire from the church choir if he still has a voice like that?
They all have to ‘retire’ at the end of year 8, whether or not their voices have changed. In fact, less than a year later his voice has now gone down an octave or two!

Well Sam, 60 yrs apart, but you and I share a lot: Decani treble, horn player, piano/organ, left choir school for senior school at 13! The Messiah was always an Xmas highlight during my six yrs at the Abbey, but for me the biggest of all was the Allegri Miserere. Perhaps a lay clerk at some cathedral soon for you, eh?

I read online Sam how you wanted to sing to God’s praise very young despite being brought up in an atheist household. That God has blessed you with such a wonderful gift and had you give him service in one of our greatest churches is a sign of his providence and I hope has at least convinced your parents to explore. I will pray for them and for you. I do hope you will find a transition voice when the time comes though a young lad I know called Archie White is still singing high register and is nearly 17!

You couldn’t ask for a better coach than Aled tbh. I remember him as a boy treble (we are similar age) and I could not believe how good he was. There is great documentary on him floating around yt somewhere.
