Songs - Scottish and Irish traditional; Bothy Ballads and others; some original new songs and melodies that I have written. I started singing at local folk/acoustic sessions when I retired. My initial aim was not to repeat myself but as the sessions grew that became impossible. However I try to keep repetitions to a minimum and have sung about 350 songs over 14 years. The lockdown due to coronavirus has put a stop to the sessions in Huntly, Tin Hut, Rothiemay, Craigenroan, Portknockie and Cullen so I am uploading songs to maintain my interest. Trying to treat as a live recording so there will be some hiccups but you rarely have stop/starts at sessions - you just get on with it! Some songs you may like, some you may not but that is always going to be the case. Enjoy.
Always With You (Song with Lyrics) - original song
Song about deep everlasting love be it for a wife, husband, partner, family member, friend, club, group, a belief or religion. Someone or something that means you are never alone. Many have their faith be it Jesus or something else. Others have close relationships with human beings or even institutions, clubs, or groups. Whichever it may be, if it gives the feeling of belonging then great. No one should ever be made to feel that they are on their own or encounter loneliness. I have already uploaded the melody - see Always With You (Melody) - and said that I would add the words later. If I can get my fingers to work properly I will try doing a guitar accompaniment.

Song adopted in the 1960s for civil rights. There can be no doubt that we should all have the same opportunities and options. Could be a plea nowadays by so many who are suffering some disability or illness.

Song by Stephen Foster; recorded by many including Nanci Griffiths. About the hard times being in the past! We have a new Government in the UK - Labour wef July 2024. Lots of promises and of hard work. Hope it is successful as we should never see people not having the basics for living. Here's hoping for sensible policies and better times for all.

Original melody. A melody that came into my head when on the guitar. Words to follow. Title seemed to come to me when playing as I was thinking that we always have someone in our thoughts be it a wife, husband, son, daughter, grandkids, friends, maybe Jesus, or even some organisation or club. I have now added the words - see Always With You (Song).

Song about where the animals fit in the scale of things - singing wise! Can't recall who I heard singing the song - could have been Bob Sharp at a local Folk Club or The McCalmans maybe. It's a lively song - for me anyway!

I wrote this some years back trying to look through the eyes of someone who was in the twilight stage of dementia. She had to go into a Care Home but didn't like it. Like so many she had her good days and her bad days. She moved to her final resting place less than a year later.

Many of us are more fortunate and we should be helping those who are not so fortunate but in a way that sees them as people not a charity.

The original was made by Cornelis Vreeswijk in swedish and the McCalmans made an english cover 1971. A very beautiful song in both languages.

I hope your brothers respond and give you a bottle of some of Scotland’s other great whiskies. Scotch is like music - you have to sample the range before you can home in on a favourite.

Memories.
These lyrics weren't 'written by Matt McGinn, though he is one of the few who sang these, along with the Corries. There is also a video of young(ish) male singer, somewhere on CZcams, singing it - at a folk club, I think. The lyrics are in a 19th century song anthology, where either Matt or Roy Williamson found them.
Great to hear this again. Time to start including it in my own set list!

Good job John. Ghosts of Colloden is a very meaningful song to us Scot’s. Fortunately our McP’s were at Ruthen barracks the night before the battle and missed the fighting. But like your song, we are here to tell the story.
First time I heard this song I was walking around base one night in Norfolk VA. I was 13 on 9/11, and to this day I can't tell you if I was more mad that we'd been attacked or that I was too young to enlist. But I got my chance later.
