The Buick 231 v6 is awful. The rods go bad after 100,000 miles due to poor oil pump design. Had an '83 Cutlass and original engine went bad. Replaced it with another one that was used and same thing. Knew other guys who had Cutlass cars from the 70s with this motor, and they all said the same thing, bad rods.

I've got personal experience, with almost every one of these engines. The Olds diesel, was at it's worst in 1978. They did not have heavier blocks, until 1979. My dad, had a 1978 88. Not only were the engines bad, they put the turbo 200 transmission, designed for the Chevette, in them. I worked as a mechanic, in an Olds dealer in 1980. They had an entore bay, filled with complete diesel engines, for warranty replacements. I had a 2001 Eldorado, with the Northstar. They came with an 8 quart oil pan, because they burned 3 quarts of oil, between oil changes. We were told, if the low oil level light comes on, pull into any GM dealer, and they will fill it for free. Their excuse was they were built loose, to maximize power. Lol. A friend of mine, made a living for a couple years, rebuilding Chrysler V6s. The problem with them, is the water pump is inside the engine. If the water pump failed, the coolant dumped into the oil pan, or, if the timing chain stretched, it jumped teeth, and the valves struck the pistons. He would go to the junkyard, and buy heads. He would disassemble them, and take all the straight valves, to replace bent ones. He coud buy the cars, in good condition, with bad motors, for $300-500, buy parts for $150, and sell the car for $3,000. My brother in law had an F150, with the 5.4, that blew the spark plugs out, from bad threads. The problem is, bad engines don't show up, for a few years. Don't ever buy a new engine design. Another one, is any Ford turbo. They all blow eventually. I made sure to buy my 2024 Ram truck, while the proven Hemi was available. I know those issues. All 2025s have turbo 6s, which are not proven yet, and will probably be as bad, as Ford turbos.

Yeah, man ! That 409 was the precursor to the 396, 427 and the 454 and that Impala with a 409 was to be feared. The most common of the Impala was small block V-8 powered. That was a decent performance car, but the "fat motor" and it's TONS of torque was pretty bad ass !' Thanks for the memories ! I am getting old enough that my memory needs to be jogged a little, LMAO ! Of all of the 409 Impalas, the 1963 was my favorite...I was lucky enough to have a friend that had one so I got to drive it quite a bit.

It's crazy how some of these engines had so much potential but were ruined by poor design choices. The Triumph V8, for instance, could have been a classic if they had just ironed out those cooling issues. It’s a shame!

I had a 1970 442 w30 455 Cutlass that I would say without looking things up would be comparable to the gs 455 buick. The SD/HO455 Pontiac Maybe they weren't all Dino tested, these were definitely some mean machines from factory back in the day, as far as muscle cars all steal , (led sleds) .very interesting nostalgia ! Keep it coming.
@@MuscleCarMasters68 so I have to say a lot of factors when we put engines into vehicles as far as what's the quickest, weight , wheelbase,gears ,tire size ect... But dino testing engines on the same dino would be a cool study .
And then there was the sp/ sd 455 Pontiac , I miss spoke earlier and said sd/ho there was however SP/SD 455 and I believe it was about 500 + HP I can't remember! Lol

You can easily distinguish a 348 from a 409 by checking the location of the dipstick. On a 409 engine, the dipstick is on the passenger side, while on a 348 engine, it's on the driver’s side.

I had a '69 GTO in 1972 and the worst I ever got outrun was by a 1967 Fairlane with a 427 / 4 speed in it. My Goat had a 400 ci and .at the time, was basically stock. I corrected that in 1973 with the 455 engine from a totaled Judge. That fixed the problem nicely...

We have a 318 my son rebuilt that we used in my 71 cuda drag car we ran it in a Ramcharger we built for the Mudbogs and it was the 3rd fastest time in the 500 class the motor was originally built for nitrous in an 81 Mirada that ran 11.5

I ll take an R code 427 and the 428CJ they were just miles of smiles, they really were just badass and you had to be willing to tune and maintain these beasts. And all of them regardless of make were good. The FE was just a race bred engine as light as a SBC and could take a 24hr all out beating and were the lightest casting of them all.
