Rookies, just because everyone subscribes to a particular conduct...doesn't mean it's always right. Just because nobody tries things a different way...doesn't mean it's wrong. If your heart is in the right place, and you're trying to do the right thing, you'll be protected. Mistakes aren't encouraged, but they're inevitable dealing in the human environment. Do your best, the hell with the rest. When in doubt, tell the truth. Coverups are always worse than the original transgression. Become competent in your work. Make plans. Instead of detail (marine bureau, swat, instructor, range) or investigator, I chose rank. Do what's best for you. Only associate with good cops. Watch the booze. Stay in shape. Don't listen to knuckleheads. And join deferred comp. Mine just hit $1 mill.

I have been on the job for 25 years. I would not trade one second for any amount of money. That being said, I would not want my kids to follow in my footsteps. I did this so they wouldn’t have to.

I am a 20 year cop and I have to disagree with a few points, but agree with others. Safety, yes, important. When you need to contact 5 people by yourself you need to be able to do it. Command presence is IMPORTANT. I am okay with turning it off when you are off-duty, but really, how can you? Officers should be carrying a weapon off-duty at all times and should/will be evaluating every person for a threat. Work on you? Totally okay with that and believe that is very important. Big Deal? I think what he was trying to say that enforceable crime is situational. Act upon crime, don't enforce every criminal issue. Healthy Decompress? Hey, this is one I agree with. It extremely important to have friends who are not in LE. Working Off Duty? Great at the beginning of the career, definitely need to back off later. Haste makes waste? This is a double edge sword. A good product is more important than efficiency, but if a department is always paying you OT to finish reports or re-write them, then that's a problem. The defense will embarrass an officer on a poorly written report. Sitting is the new smoking? Can't agree more! Not just for health, but sitting around is not what the tax payers expect. Martial Arts? Absolutely! Defensive Tactics should be a department's priority, but due to time and cost it often is not. A lot of thugs train (very lazily) in MMA. It doesn't take much to overcome their resistance, but you need to know something and, more importantly, you need to know your limits?

Is the ufc doing anything for Matt? Did they pay for any of his medical bills? The ufc should be taking care of former fighters like Matt when they have unforseen tragedies in their lives. I know Matt does not want anybody to take care of him but the ufc should be helping him out.
