coachprincetonbasketball.com features the Princeton Offense for Basketball Coaches. Win by Design. This style of play will help you win more games by using quick cuts, spacing, and pacing. I spent almost a decade studying the Princeton System before installing it successfully with my high school teams.
We were featured in the best-selling DVD from Championship Productions: Winning with the Princeton Style Offense.
Eight years later we have put together the ultimate blueprint from suggestions of coaches at the professional, college, high school, and youth levels.
Coach DeForest breaks the Princeton Offense concepts into reads and counters. He defines reads as being player-controlled and counters as being coach-controlled. Utilizing this conceptualization, DeForest provides detailed diagrams on a whiteboard and then illustrates these concepts on the court with his team in a 5 on 0 setting.

Princeton Offense: Strongside Set

The Chin Set has a counter that can be ran by a pass back to the same side wing. Strongside is the name of the set and features a downscreen on the ball side and a flare screen on the weakside. This is a great set to run against a switching defense because the flare screener can slip to the rim. This is a good set to run anytime, but for sure against the weakside switching. How does that old adage make any sense? "Always Press a Pressing team." If you are Pressing them... doesn't that make YOUR TEAM a Pressing Team? I played on a Pressing team. Now I am the Assitant Coach on a team that does not Press and we are 1 of the best Defense in our State for the past 2 years and will be again this year. (#2 in the state last season, I think #8 2 years ago). We play against Pressing teams ad we just beat their Press regularly and we get back and don't give up transition points. We don't have the depth or much speed. We can't Press. Why would we Press just because our Opponent Presses?
On the flip side, why would Pressing Tams not have good Press Offenses? They have to practice their Press. Are they not practicing their Press Offense Against the Press too?
Did you ever see any zone ?

Chin "Ricky " has become a productive option. Ricky = reverse Perform the traditional cut all the way to the basket off that backscreen, then reverse field back up to the Top of Key, using that same High Post screener = 3-pointer at the Top of Key
I love that Quick Elbow option.😀😀😀
I like the DHO & corresponding Exchange with a Trailing BIG instead of a guard (a real Pindown Screen set by the 4-Man vs. just exchanging places). 😅😅😅 I see easier passes if the Give & Go return pass is looked at before the wing pass. For some reason that backscreen creates a "quick window," then pass to the wing (Trailing BIG ) is like a safety net.
There must be ACTION going on with the 2 weakside players = a true Pindown Screen, none of that stationary Stand & be a spectator.
Wing Player gotta be much higher than the Elbow BIG if you are doing the Pass & Corner cut.
The Coach Rick Adelman "Corner Offense " has always been 1 of my Top 3 Offensive Sets of All-time.
This is NO warm-up. It's full-blow haul @$$! This comes from Nolan Richardson's 40 minutes of Hell back in the 1990's. This is not camaraderie. These players have been threatened with additional consequences (more sprinting) if they mess up. Never, ever do anything strenuous early in practice. No jumping, no bouncing, no sprinting, no explosions. Ease into your basketball program. Do stationary ball handing, partner passing, form shooting at the beginning. Do agilities and stretches as any track or soccer team would do. Gradually break a sweat at a medium-slow pace with uncomplicated tasks that do not stress the athlete. "Heavier-than-normal" should never be considered a warm-up activity. Jetting off from the get-go is not intelligent. It leads to pulled muscles, stress factures, torn ligaments, and the best case scenario is shin splints, which can take weeks to heal. Here's a mostly proper warm-up: czcams.com/video/jKsnNE7M0Kw/video.html Here's another warm-up: czcams.com/video/_Dku_Ev-Cm4/video.html Take it easy for the first 10-20 minutes and slowly build up steam!! Your athletes will much appreciate this. The coach benefits by having healthy athletes whose focus comes together without negativity.
I need a guy....love Hubie
Awesome stuff coach! I remember defending the princeton in college and it was pretty difficult. I just received the head varsity job at Cabrillo HS in Lompoc, Ca and we will be running this offense! I subscribed and bought your book as well. Your guys have this down pat and the awesome thing about it is how patient they are. Thanks for sharing and good luck this season!
Thank you coach! Reach out to me anytime if I can help!
Really appreciate that coach! Question. How did you get your players to be so patient and not feel like they have to go 100 miles per hour all the time?
FreshFam ball toughness drills...
I wonder if the guy lurking in the doorway is Hubie's security
1) the twirl is obviously a pressure breaker. how would I get it deeper in the half court like right on the top of the key. 2) why did the backdoors not work as well against this team. I was super excited to watch this game because I wanted to see the pressure get whipped into sagging. I watched the other full game with what looked to be a 6'8 post that went into overtime. they started the game sagging. I saw you video of what you do vs the chin switch. what do you do with the chin sag particularly with a screening big that doesn't shoot that middy very well. thanks coach. 1-4 can pass and shoot. don't do to well driving. my five is big in the post and drives well but doesn't do to well shooting. so we are currently doing a lot of low split cuts. but I wanna run this chin motion better.
b brown thank you for the comment. This was our first year executing the system and the other team won a state title in Tennessee, so we didn’t execute very well against the pressure as you can see by the film. This was a Christmas tournament and our first game, so I put it on here so people can see it’s not always perfect and there will be some bad games. At the top of the key in Twirl? Would be more difficult, but we ran a Fist and set a ball screen entry into Twirl so that made it easier to get it to the top; also in Chin if you step out after the screens there is an opportunity.
b brown one thing I would do is watch the new video that shows what Michigan does and we called it Quick 1 or Quick 2 where we used a non-shooting big as a ball screened to force the big to help.
Coach, love these Princeton breakdowns. Fantastic stuff. Have you ever considered doing one on Kermit Davis' playbook?
Quick DHO = MANDATORY Pindown on weakside / Forwards Out. 😂😂😂 My favorite because the Shooting Guard is making the Guard-to-Guard pass & going to the LEFT CORNER.
Slip option = mandatory catch outside the 3-point line/ Top of Key for my Center, then downscreens for BOTH sides. 😀😀
Quick return pass to initial ballhandler is ALWAYS #1 PRIORITY before that wing pass/2-Pass.😀😀😀 4-Man/PF is always on that left wing = my guard-to-guard return pass should be a better pass in crowded situations.
My 4-Man (a shooter) would be my Trailer, so he gets to set the corresponding down-screen, while DHO is taking place between my PG & 3-Man. Flare screen = Catch & Shoot 3-pointer by my 2-Man/ best shooter on the team. I gotta have 4 shooters if I am going to run Princeton.
DeAndre Page good idea...4 shooters almost any offense these days...
@@leedeforest2825 I ran CHIN with my High School feeder program, but the defense always clogged the paint with a 2-3 Zone Defense. My ballhandler (3-Man) after DHO made a lot of LEFT Corner 3-pointers off wing to corner pass.
@@leedeforest2825 We ran UCLA High Post too, 2-3 High instead of 1-4 High. Wing entry, ball reversal & initial ballhandler cuts back up off a Single or Double Staggered Screen
They don't do this version in 2018 NBA. 😀😀😀 Corner is already filled. Kind of like Dribble Entry. Pass to LeBron James at the ELBOW , then fake downscreen (reject the screen for basket cut & layup). If basket cut pass is denied it's a DHO to initial ballhandler & Ball Reversal to the opposite side of the court = multiple passes
This isn’t the NBA version; in the video it is Michigan from 2018. This is where all of that stuff originated. The old Princeton teams were running elbow sets a long time ago. The Corner Offense is Flip Saunders old offense that has a different entry. Yes.
Anytime. Here are some good examples of 2guard offense: czcams.com/video/SINaTdVcX64/video.html
What happens if teams don’t play you out that far from the operational zone?
If they sag then you screen them in and shoot; if they pressure you backdoor. A simple read is the flare screen-it’s a good read if you play deep for a 3 point shot and the back screen works for the layup or post up from the wing entry.
Lee DeForest thank you! And I guess I’m asking if they sag do you still start so deep?
Yes. Always start high and wide; same alignment no matter the defense. If it’s a trapping defense you are in a 2guard set; if it’s pressure or sag then you are fine also. The defense will adjust to you and it gives your players more room to pass and cut so sagging isn’t necessarily an advantage. Hit the player off the flare and then drive and kick to the single side for a shot or get into a low post set. This is one of 6 sets of the Princeton Offense.
Lee DeForest appreciate it coach
Hi Coach, I have both of your Championship Productions DVD's and your Youth Basketball Playbook. I'd love to learn that 2 guard front zone offense you're running around 14 mins. Looks like it's against a 1-3-1. I can see the basic movement, but I'd love more info if you have it. Keep up the good work. I'm a new Varisty coach and one of your biggest followers.

Stan Dohm thank you coach!
Like the UCLA Cut part 😄😄😄
Shoot the DAMN 3-POINTER big man ( PF/Center) 😢😢😢
Chin Offense (Strongside)
Need a STRETCH-5 😂😂😂. This would be the knock-out punch if you have a Center that can make Top of Key 3-pointers off Pick & Roll/ POP !!!
princeton.youthbasketballplaybook.com
I love it when Chin Offense starts on the LEFT SIDE instead of the right. Most coaches start 90% of their plays on the right side.
The Big guy looks like a Bond villain
The Laker players never gave this offense a chance with Coach Scott. NBA players don't like the multiple cuts. Prefer an easier offense that's Pick & Roll based.
Amazing

This is actually not strongside that is a different set; this is just the regular Chin set. Maybe we have different terminology?
