I'm curious which method would work best when you split bills with a significant other, but want to budget together. Currently we each have our own bank accounts and handle different payments.

Nick, I am grateful for your work doing these videos. You have a way of explaining that makes it so easy for me to understand YNAB.💯 I have been using YNAB for almost a month so far and the third option (The tracking one) really clicks for me.

Hey, firstly thanks for your videos - you've helped me set up YNAB and properly budget my money. I'm using Method #1, and there's two points I wanted to make about it: 1. Some of those short-term savings take a few months before they're spent. There's plenty of easy-access, penalty-free accounts that pay some monthly interest. I'd be missing out on some easy money if I kept it all in my current account. 2. I don't think it's necessary to create one savings account for each savings goal. I have different saving categories for different goals, but I only have on easy-access tracking account where that money goes. I feel this is as close as possible to the YNAB mentality, while also recognizing some of the benefits of having multiple accounts.

YNAB is the 3rd budgeting app i downloaded this week. I tried Monarch and Everydollar but honestly even after watching some tutorials, they just didnt make sense. So I downloaded YNAB and after watching your tutorial I know that THIS is the app I've been looking for. It's very similar to the excel sheet I've been using but now i will have all my financial info at my fingertips instead of on my old (and really slow) laptop. Thank you for all you do to make learning to budget easier!

I live in The Netherlands and what got me really confused was having a "positive balance" on the Credit Card within YNAB. I basically do not have any credit card debt, however, some subscriptions (like YNAB) can only be paid by credit card and not by using my Dutch bank account. As an extra security for my transactions, I like to transfer the budgeted amount of credit card payments to my credit card in advance. Say that for the month of August 73 euro's of credit card payments are coming up, I like to transfer this amount to my credit card as soon as I receive my paycheck. This way, when the automatic credit card transactions are due, they will take money from my positive credit card budget and I will never get accidentally into the red numbers. However the way this positive balance looked within my budget in YNAB was really weird. And even now I seem to understand it a bit, it still confuses me big time. But I will try to explain: 1. Make a transaction to your Bank Account 2. As a Payee select "To/From: Credit Card" 3. The Category "Credit Card (Credit Card Payments)" will automatically selected 4. State the amount (73) in the outflow column (the money will flow out from your bank account where you make the transaction). 5. Go back to your Budget: Be confused. When you do the transfer as described above, but select a "To/From: Savings Account" as a payee, step 5 will not confuse you, since your budget will not be affected. YNAB looks at all the money available in all your Budget Accounts and moving it to a different "physical" account does not change anything in the budget. However, when you do this to a Credit Card, the money you transferred to a Credit Card is suddenly visible as "Ready to Assign" money (73). And in the Credit Card Payments Category you will see the money you transferred in the "Activity" column (-73) behind your credit card. However, as a negative number. The money will be shown in red numbers in the "Available Column" (-73) as well. 6. Assign the money to the credit card. Step 6 is what was really confusing me, but apparently the money that just came available as "Ready to Assign" money, needs to be assigned to the credit card. Why? Don't ask me why... But at least my budget and accounts show the correct numbers again. Now, when the credit card transactions from your "to be paid by credit card" categories are made, this will not affect the number of money shown in the "available" column of your credit card. This will remain 0 after the transaction. The only thing that goes down, is the actual balance of the credit card. Maybe this is a bit logical, since you do not need to have any money available for a credit card payment that was already executed and didn't lead to you having to pay off your credit card debt. A long story, but I hope I helped someone with this :)
