What I am interested in is wether the manner loops and knots connect in Nalbinding translates into garment properties which are different to knitted and crocheted ones. It seems to me that compared to knitting Nalbinding produces denser and heavier garments compared with knitting. But given the important role of air pockets play in the thermal isolation of the garment, that density might not result in warmer pullovers. purely inspired by the wisdom of my livingroom couch I wonder wether there was a time when people chose for certain garments Nalbinding, for others knitting and for some even crocheting? I'm intrigued! Nalbinding landed in my feed first time today like a "UWO" ;-)

You mention prostitutes being forced to wear stripes in places (5:36) and I just want to add that in western medieval Europe, stripes were associated with evil/sin/devilry, and that social outcasts as a whole may have worn/been forced to wear them. The most likely explanation (in my opinion at least) for why Europeans didn’t like stripes was because of the Bible verse Leviticus 19:19 that says you aren’t supposed to wear clothing woven of two kinds of material. Because stripes are by nature different colours, they could easily be seen as being different material (even if it’s just the same material dyed different colours)

This was great! I will have to check out more of this content 👍 I had never heard about the yellow hood thing, but then I'm doing practical research for writing (which doesn't tend to deal with prostitutes) and so haven't come up against all the pragmatic little issues that active reenactors must have to deal with. That's why I love hearing from people who have actually worn the clothes, lived in the buildings, done the jobs, etc. of a given historical setting. It's absolutely invaluable. I had heard of the other tropes, but the responses were still useful and informative. I think my least favorite of these stereotypes is showing the medieval world as a universally dreary, brown, bleak existence. Such depictions are an insult to the truly colorful, imaginative, vibrant, lively, varied, and interesting lives of medieval people.

Sumptuary laws just for social class differentiation? I guess it was a critique on people saying you can't wear this or that as a reenactor because of history and sumptuary laws and making it a social class fight is so much in line with our modern taste.

I find nalbinding very interesting -- it looks like knitting done in reverse, where you make a cast-on with a needle, and then keep adding a new cast-on edge to the bottom over and over. Very fascinating, and I can see why it was so long-lived a craft given that you just need one easily-obtained needle that can be used to work many projects at once. It's also portable given that it won't unravel easily. It's a bit like knitting with the advantages of crochet. I've done it before, but with modern acrylic yarn, which is less convenient given that the constant joins become annoying. I can see how it would be much better with woolen yarns the ends of which you can felt to one another.

English wood did suck! Adam Smith pointed this out in his book The Wealth of Nations. It was propaganda that it was better. Sheep in England were raised mostly for their meat. Also, export restrictions on wool were to the benefit of weavers. So one could export cloth but not raw wool.

I'm curious as to why you say to always choose real wool - is that a true to history re-enactment thing, or does it actually make a difference with the finished project? I am allergic to wool (it makes me itchy and sneezy) so everything I work with is either mostly acrylic or cotton. The quick test run I made with my acrylic seemed to work okay but I only got 3 stitches in before I got frustrated trying to do it on the thumb lol so my next try will be off the thumb. Today my plastic darning needle, tomorrow maybe I'll start carving my own little wooden needle!

It's sad people think of Medieval colors as grey green iron brown. I like to point out sumptuary laws were passed only after the lower classes were found dressing like nobles. I tell 0eople watch The last fuel then The adventures of Robin Hood 1938. Then understand the 1938 movie was closer to reality in the color palette. Greens, browns & yellows were cheap so yes outlaws wore them. Reds, blues, orange were harder & hence middle class finally to the purples & scarlets of the wealthy.

I first came across nalbinding a few years ago at a viking/medieval festival near Copenhagen and I got the impression that it's a craft only spread in the Nordic reenactment community. I've recently discovered that it's not the case and that even some reenactors in my homecountry Czechia are quite skilled at this craft. I am fairly good at crocheting but I'm determined to learn nalbinding and create a hood for the upcoming festival in Denmark. It looks way more complicated then crocheting though, which stitch would you suggest is the most beginner friendly?
