Bikepacking The Sea to Sky Trail: Squamish to Lillooet & Harrison Lakes
Hey everyone, after cycling along the highway from Vancouver to Squamish, this week's video is us bikepacking the Sea to Sky Trail, an incredible cycling and hiking trail that stretches from the coastal town of Squamish to the alpine meadows of Whistler and Pemberton.
Following a route rich in history, it traces the historical routes used by the Coast Salish and Interior Salish First Nations for travel and trade since time immemorial. Winding its way along the Cheakamus river and the Sea to Sky Corridor, this trail offers breathtaking views, showcasing some of the most stunning landscapes in British Columbia.
However, our journey today will continue past the end of this trail, going inland on forest service roads, camping along Lillooet Lake, exploring natural hot springs, and testing ourselves on the hilly and rugged logging roads of Harrison Lake.

First Time Cycling From Vancouver to Squamish on The Sea to Sky Highway!
zhlédnutí 990Před 2 měsíci
Hey everyone, this weeks video is the first leg of a recent bikepacking trip of mine and it all starts with my first time cycling to Squamish from Vancouver along the Sea to Sky Highway. I had heard horror stories of cyclists getting seriously injured by cars so I was fairly nervous. Watch the video to see how things go! My next video or two will be the second and third part of the trip where I...

Hey everyone, I am happy to have finally finished up my video from this past September's trip back to my hometown of New York City. I flew to Toronto in late September after my summer work contract ended. From there I cycled along the coastline of Lake Ontario and made my way to the start of the Erie Canalway Trail. In total I did around 1,300kms from Toronto to New York City, arriving just in ...

Hey everyone, this week we explore one of America's most polluted bodies of water, a notorious superfund site polluted by decades of environmentally devastating industry during the 20th century. Only in the past few years has its restoration become more of a priority to both the Environmental Protection Agency, local politicians and businesses (including large-scale nearby residential and comme...

A few weeks ago, I embarked on an epic cycling adventure, tracing my way back to the city where I spent the first 18 years of my life. Over the course of more than a thousand kilometers, I traversed a diverse landscape, pedaling along winding roads, picturesque canal trails, and forested rail trails. Finally, I made it back to the place I once, or maybe still, call home. Join me in this video a...

We head up along the Sunshine Coast and up Vancouver Island for the big group bikepacking event hosted by the Vancouver Island Bikepacking Collective. Taking a bus from Sechelt to Halfmoon Bay reduced the route by a few dozen kilometers and helped me make good progress to the hammock spot of the night near Ruby Lake. From there it was only a (rainy) half an hour to the ferry from Earls Cove and...

How do I book the premier corporate meeting room?
Just did the drive from Toronto to NYC and back. I came across this video and really liked it. You have a potential to become a way bigger content creator!
I so enjoyed watching this. Thank you for taking us along!
That construction to UBC was due to an earlier landslide and fallen trees. It is all clear now (spring of 2024).
appreciate this video; would love more of the gulf islands ^ ^
One word. EPIC! Good on ya. Oh you walked to the store, well I rode from Squamish to the south end of Harrison Lake.
Is this different than the GNBR in the same area?
Thanks so much for your time and effort creating this content for us viewers. This is now on my bucketlist.
Great video! Such beautiful scenery with cool trails and bridges!
definitely an awesome route, I love a good bridge crossing!
Its a sewer pipe
yup also true haha
Thank you for the amazing video. Question?? - Is the 5 km highway road section in the middle of the Sea To Sky trail right on the shoulder of the road or is it like the one picture in your article... with a metal guard and trail on the other side. Wanting to backpack that section with my animals and wondering how safe? Thank you for taking the time to read and answer my question
hey, unfortunately the highway segments that interrupt the trail are full highway segments, no physical protection whatsoever.
hmm I'm really unsure. I honestly had not considered what hikers do at this section.
Outstanding video! Thanks, mate. I now have to go and watch the first leg to Squamish. 😊
thank you! and yeah I wish there was a better way to Squamish..
Beautifully produced looked like an amazing trip
thanks very much!
Another inspiring one! As always, enjoyed the ride along Jordan. You visited many spots I'd been to over the decades (not by bike but car on the way to hikes like Lizzie Lake etc.) I cannot imagine some of the roads you must have had to endure.
awe thank you so much, really glad you enjoyed it!
I see at least one bald eagle in the group of birds, maybe three. One large, two smaller... maybe momma is giving flying and fishing lessons. Some nice views along this trip 😊
oooh didn't notice that, nice!
Inspiring 👏 Do you recommend using the dry bag as a saddlebag?
thanks! and honestly it worked perfectly. (though strapping and unstrapping each day way a major pain, but I also didn't have a longer strap which would have helped.
@@JordanVegBike I actually got excited by the idea of having a waist bag as the strap. A couple of more pockets for the ride, and more organization in camp. Great job. Keep rocking.
How long of a distance is it between Squamish and Whistler? How long did it take you? Beautiful video ❤
Squamish and Whistler is only about 65km on the trail but quite a bit of elevation.
One of the best cycling videos! I subscribed
awe thank you so much!
Totally love this video. The scenery is amazing. Now i want to go bikepacking! I live in Comox Valley and definitely have not seen BC from this angle. P.s. no bras past this point😂😂😂😂😂
you definitely should! and yeah that sign 😂
How is it possible that sloquet was empty? I thought that place had been ruined(See: Joffre Lakes).
yup, Instagram and TikTok lied to me! 😂 Guess a calm park isn't that outrage-worthy hey?
I was thinking of doing this ride but was a little nervous and glad to see that it wasn't too bad.
definitely the timing is going to be the most important part. let me know how it goes if you do it!
I drove the West Harrisson Lake road many times to go hit that same hotspring. Kudo for you to do it on a bike, it's quite a long way north-south and so many yahoos driving too fast, making tons of dust! But yeah, you made the whole trip look pretty easy and quick (which it isn't!). Cheers!
definitely a fun trip, that hotspring was so nice. I don't know why but I think I got very lucky with everything. There were only a handful of people at the hotspring campground and overall traffic was pretty light. Definitely had one or two yahoo despite that, not sure how many more I could reasonably handle.
Curious about the gear you used - action cam and a mirrorless camera?
ooh love this question. With the exception of the drone shots everything was actually taken with the latest iPhone! (I returned it after tho, quality was good but still not quite there. Impressive for a phone for sure.
@@JordanVegBike right on! That portrait mode video (or fake bokeh or whatever it's called!) is def impressive!
@@cameron.h.russell oooh I actually didn't even try that feature!
Another enjoyable video Jordan.. bear spray helps you sleep better at night!
thanks glad you liked it! Though funny I didn't actually have it anywhere nearby while I was sleeping haha. Should it be in my hammock with me?
Being noisy on the Tral is very important when I bike alone. Using my Electric horn makes sure wildlife knows I'm coming as well as talking out loud.
honk honk love it
Gorgeous video, charmingly narrated
thank you very much, glad you liked the narration. it's always the part that I procrastinate on because it makes me nervous.
Another great one. Good feeling out in this land thanks for taking us along.
thanks for joining, glad you enjoyed!
Are there any parts that a dual sport motorcycle would have trouble with? I'm thinking maybe I'll take that route on mu next trip towards Lillooet. Looks amazing!
I did the West Harrison / Inshuckchuck last year on a KLR. It was nice. The ugly section by the north end of Harrison Lake has been fixed. The worst is that it isn't well packed down, so traction will feel a touch sketchy. And I mean just a touch. Otherwise go for it.
you mean the Harrison/Lillooet Lake route? If a bike can handle it then you could for sure. If you mean The Sea to Sky Trail then motorized vehicles aren't allowed (with the exception of ebikes).
@@JordanVegBike I did mean tye sea to sky. I don't care that "they" don't want motorized vehicles, I'll do 8t anyway, provided It is doable on my dual sport of course.
@@davejoe2592 cool 👍
Where is that green steel bridge?
it's the Whistler Bungee bridge a bit south of Whistler.
Amazing stuff
thank you!!
You are smart to be worried about bears. They’re definitely there!
I'm bare aware! Maybe not bare worried anymore though...
It is an Absulutly beautiful video. Your arial shots are amazing. Made a great ending for my day. Thank you!!!
awe thank you so much for the really kind words.
Great video! Thanks!
glad you enjoyed :)
Looks amazing, but yeah, wish there was a safer way to cycle from Vancouver to Squamish. Some kind of separated biking/walking route would be fantastic.
Yup. If the BC Government/Metro Vancouver/BC Hydro wanted to they could develop a route or allow bikes/hikers to use the existing access roads. I think they are partially motivated by mitigating wildfire risk, which is fair.
@@JordanVegBike Definitely wildfire mitigation. I've driven enough FSRs to see what kind of garbage gets dumped and illegal campfires started and left behind. I'm pretty sure I've put out 2 or 3 on my own that I've stumbled across. But maybe if you have to cycle/hike it, you're going to get more of a crowd with... integrity.
@@MidnightPolak yeah I definitely don't think opening it up to public vehicle access is a good idea whatsoever. But partnering with the Trans Canada Trail, BC Hydro, Metro Van, Squamish Nation, etc and having designated campsites with pit toilets etc could be a really great hiking/cycling route and open up Squamish, Whistler etc. But again political will.
what did you put on that hummus wrap?
smoked tofu! It's great because it can go without refrigeration for a few days if necessary.
@@JordanVegBikethanks, something about that shot made me wanna try that exact meal, im vegan btw
@@rashs6302 yup, a classic bikepacking meal for sure.
Thank you for this video. Great footage. The trail has cyclists crossing the highway (2:52 in the video) in a curve. Eeep. How far along the highway until you found the trail again? And how did you get on with the crossing? White knuckled?
yup good catch on that one! Unfortunately there are a few sections where the trail ends and puts you on the highway. That curve is the start of a 5km highway section, mostly downhill at least. I think you could cross a few dozen meters further up and have slightly less of a curve, but yeah it is still quite sketchy. Had to trust my ears on this one. (Luckily cars are very loud, even when you can't see them)
Shadow Lake is an inlet for the Cheakamus plant that is on the Squamish river. The Cheakamus dam by the highway holds the reservoir and water is diverted into Shadow Lake before it goes into a tunnel and down to the Squamish river.
ooh figured it was something like that, thank you!
Great video, thanks. can you take your bike right to the hot springs ?
the hotsprings have a campground but there is a short path down to the river/springs that you'll have to walk.
May I ask what kind/type of bike you have ?
it's a Fairdale gravel bike. Pretty solid I'd say.
@@JordanVegBike thank you
Nice work Jordan
thanks Cyrus!
Did you camp at Grace Lake on your final night?
good question and close, I ended up at Wood Lake as it was almost getting dark.
I rode this in June. Amazing route. Brutal and glorious suffering with breathtaking views and vistas.
yeah the views and location really helped distract me for sure. no complaints!
What an excellent video. I feel so relaxed after watching this.
thank you so much, Nic!
did you casually do a fondo with a bikepacking setup?! amazing
ahaha perhaps ;)
@@JordanVegBike I'll have to inquire about your Vancouver sea-to-sky ride. The fondo killed me dead hahahah
epic!
thank ya!
I enjoyed this pretty, relaxing, and serene video, which also provided some glimpses into lesser-seen sides of British Columbia. Can you explain about the log barges and stuff?
thank you so much! Do you mean the section of the lake where there are a few boats and logs floating? It's part of a logging operation. I believe logs are floated to this site from other places along the lakeshore and then put on trucks, weighed, and transported for further processing or shipping. The day after there were a few logging trucks using the road but none the day before.
Would you recommend a mountain bike or was it alright on a gravel bike?
totally great on a gravel bike, especially the Sea to Sky Trail section. For the lakes a mountain bike might have been fun but the gravel bike did totally fine.
Great film, thanks for sharing!
thank you very much Jalen!
Nice Trailer at the end, looking forward to next week!
aha thank you! Still working on it. Next week might mean next month at my rate 😂
I’ll be adding this to my to do list. Thanks for posting!
Yes definitely! Going up to Whistler is a bit hilly but the distance is not long at all, so very doable.
