Awesome advice. New sub.
You developed your own beautiful style. ❤ fantastic 👏
If all else fails finding a live modle look in the mirror and draw yourself.....
Very inspiring channel. I find some of the art community to be kind of... meh, pretentious, inflated, sometimes gatekeeping. I used to draw a lot as a child, later on a bit less, then I stopped and did it only ocassionally. Now I'm coming back to it, I usually draw people. Sometimes I feel that it's useless, that there is no point in doing it but I guess it is what it is. If you're drawn to do it, you will do it no matter how you sometimes feel about it. Charcoal seems to work well with my personality. Thanks for the videos
Thats VERY GOOD advice to go MANY incomplete to the last detail portraits. I will make it my goal 2024. thanks
Thanks! and good luck with your drawings!
01:00 - best insight I've heard when it comes to practice and it's something I'll keep in mind every time I attempt to draw portraits. I've always wondered why I struggle to draw freehand. Now it makes sense to me. I've developed good techniques for rendering, but my ability to abstract reality to draw the underlying construction of my subject is severely lacking. I get bogged down with seeing details and my tendency is to render as I construct. Forcing myself to just practice the construction in my journal can hopefully detach me from the tendency to focus on details.
Thanks for commenting! Best of luck with your work.
I love your drawing style and this advice. Would you share how do you find so many references to practice so much, and different viewpoints, expressions and lighting?
Thank you Juliette! Apart from taking my own pics, I spend a lot of time searching for good references. Image sharing sites are nice but even then, finding something with good light is a chore. Pinterest has a lot of pics of heads and faces and it's easy to search. Lots of celebrities, which may or may not be your thing, but some good practice pics regardless.
Your voice very soothing and the content reassuring I’m a rank amateur, but loving it
Thanks so much!
“We’re all doing this because we love to draw” Whoa there, let’s not make too many assumptions.
😅
Thank you for this helpful video.
Good points for portrait drawings.
I gave up drawing after watching this video . This guy is incredible.
You should start again Brent! It's not a contest.
Ai is better who cares anymore?
That Rod Sterling voice combined with instructional wisdom makes for the perfect learning platform in which to grow in skill and knowledge. Well done. I'm inspired to persevere in this new, artistic journey that I am on. Thank you, Mr. Haines.
Thanks so much for the kind message! I love hearing that. I wish you all the best with your art.
really nice!! im a teenager and i used to draw lots of realism for school credits but after a while i got bored and started drawing more semi-realism to anime art so i forgot most my skills
Thanks! There's nothing wrong with a less realistic style and the skills you develop will compliment a more realistic approach if you decide to go that way even though it may not seem like it. Best of luck!
Wow amazing 😮
You're very honest and I appreciate you and your video.
Thanks so much, I appreciate that.
@@JeffHainesArt you're very welcome.
Thank you!!
Fantastic process! Appreciate the way you feel out the form. Thanks for the inspiring demo. One thing I see on the photo is that the lips are slightly pursed, which affects the curve of the line under the top lip.
Thank you! Glad that you enjoyed it.
At 13:35 you lift out highlights with a kneaded eraser. My experience has been mild so far trying to do this with charcoal. It is way more greyish than this. Is it a matter of paper quality?
It's more likely the charcoal. Are you using soft (natural) charcoal? Compressed charcoal (charcoal pencils included) is harder to remove. Check out the most recent vid I posted for a more thorough discussion of this.
Excellent advice; to work more on the quick studies then trying to do complete portraits when starting off. Thanks!
Thanks you! and good luck to you.
"If it's really terrible, you'll never see this" AHAHAHAH
Great video!
Good Work. I drew along with you and made my first face that look amazing. This inspires me to make a better one. Greatly appreciated.

Haha, thanks so much! I usually see weird as a positive thing. Keep going weirdo.
A very informative and educational video! Thank you Jeff!
Thanks! Glad you liked it.
Amazing! From childhood I always wanted to be an artist but my perfectionism has always got the best of me. Watching your videos has inspired me to continue to try. It’s like you’re speaking to my soul. Please keep making videos.
Thanks Robert! Perfection is overrated and can be kind of dull in a way. I'd much rather be interesting than perfect. Keep drawing dude!
your talks are great! more videos pls
Thanks! I will do that :)
Merci beaucoup 😀
Thank you!
Have you ever tried powdered charcoal? It makes for interesting effects, but forget spraying it with fixative. It just blows away. This video was very helpful. Your work is beautiful and I am inspired to get my charcoals out again.
Thank you! Glad you liked it. I haven't messed around with powdered charcoal much other than the powder that accumulates as I draw with the sticks. I've seen it used to great effect though, and I have a little container of broken vine and willow stubs that I think about crushing into a powder and trying it. :)
Great video, great advice! Your voice sounds like Bryan Cranston too
Thanks so much! Haha, I've heard that a few times now :)
This helped alot !! totally agree sir! 👍your work is beautiful !
Thanks so much! Glad it helped.

Вальсирующий уголь-это великолепно!❤

I agree and appreciate all your instructions. Very good!
This is so helpful thank you! Do you have any brands you would recommend?
Thank you Sarah, different brands of soft charcoal can actually be quite different and it's a matter of preference really. The brand I use mostly is 'Coates' for willow.
Hi Sarah, Sennelier, Winsor Newton, Daler Rowney, Faber Castell and Nitram all do soft charcoal, all very good quality, Nitram a Canadian manufacturer make a wide range of thicknesses and degrees of hardness, they are more expensive here in Ireland. My favourite compressed charcoal is manu. by Cretacolor, they make these in a round and a flat shape I think the flat is better they are about 1cm x 5ml x 7cm. very intense dark! I apologise for intruding on your question to Jeff. PS. i also use Coates, very economical, loved Jeff's drawings!
@@JeffHainesArt thank you!
@@gerryclarke9795 thanks ever so much for that Gerry. No intrusion at all, your suggestions are very much appreciated!
You’ve been doing this for some time. Yes? Your skill and ease with the medium is obvious. What is interesting and something your viewers should be aware is the finished drawing is not a replica or ‘exact’ copy. It is an interpretation. An artists rendition. It is not a photographic copy. And it is not meant to be. What is most important to know is perfection is not the aim. If you will, John S. Sargent had this ability. His drawings were more paintings in charcoal while remaining a drawing. An astonishing ability I have never been able to duplicate. Or come close to achieving. Of course, personality and aim has a great deal to do with it. Thank you for sharing you skill and ability with us.
Thanks for commenting, I agree. I think a certain amount of life or energy is lost when you chase a perfect likeness. I think the interpretation is more important. And to answer your question, yes, I’ve been drawing forever, but primarily with charcoal for 7 or 8 years now.
My first comment is your voice. I can listen to you recite the phone book. Very sultry and deep. Second I have used compressed charcoal for years and only after watching your videos did I move into vine or natural charcoal. Man, what a difference! Thanks for this vid. I now use both. Start with vine and finish with compressed. I don’t like fixing charcoal. Leaves a dotted effect Oh! And it is messy. But a wonderful drawing medium.
Right? Once I started using willow a lot I didn’t want to do my initial sketching with anything else. I often use pencils in the later stages too. Glad you like the video!
Hi Jeff! I love your videos, your approach towards charcoals and your sense of humor! Thank you for the great insights and I keep confusing your voice with Marshal Vandruff's! You two sound so similar, it's insane! Even your intonations! wow
Thanks so much Leila! Glad you like the videos and the voice :)
😊🙏
Great video. Thank you!
Very well explained- thanks for sharing!
For the love of god will someone please explain what kind of paper to use? This seemingly simple thing is hard to find an answer for lol
I’d love to know the correct way to prepare a canvas for a combination of charcoal and acrylic. ♥️
Haha, sorry I forgot to talk about paper. I might try to make a video on surfaces. Short answer: I use Strathmore 300 & 400 series drawing paper. medium finish. Just a little tooth but not as textured as 'charcoal ' paper.
@@JeffHainesArt thank you Jeff!
C'est rare de tomber sur une video aussi claire , heureusement que les sous titres sont disponible , le français que je suis n'aurait pas pu profiter de cette video interessante . Merci

which size of sketches are those which you showed in video
The faces are about the size of an outstretched hand.
Wonderful lesson, thank you so much.
As a beginner it's extremely useful to see the drawing process of professional artists like you. I tend to get too focused on the details, so it's fascinating to observe how you construct the face. There's so much to learn from this video. Many thanks.
Thank you! Glad that you found it useful :)
