E7: Tiny A-Frame Cabin build: USB Ceiling Fan, Water Rill Catchment and new Windows
In this episode I
-added a water catchment system for the front wall using a standard metal stud (Home Depot kind) to slope the drainage of water. I will be coating the metal in the future to protect against rust.
-I switched out the polycarbonate twin wall windows for 1/8 acrylic. Water was getting trapped inside the channels of the poly and rotting the wood. I cut the acrylic slowly with my dremel sawmax.
- I tested out a usb ceiling fan to push the warmer air down. I used my inside thermometer to test results which were pretty poor. While it did move the air around a little it didn’t result in much of a benefit so I took it down. It was worth a try :)

I update my a-frame transforming wall to be 100% 1/16 in clear polycarbonate. I also added an X formed suspension cable to help with wobbliness when opening and to give it more support when strong winds hit. Suspension cable was 1/4 inch. I screwed eyebolts into the frame, attached a locking d rind then looped the ends of the wire (using clamp) to attach. This has made a world of difference in ...

Summer updates I made to the tiny transforming a frame. 1. Added solar vent. I calculated the needs of the fan based on square footage of cabin (120 sq ft) then calculated air intake needs for the floor vent. I had to add a bigger vent in bottom of door 😕 2. Starting the kitchen cabinets. They will be 10 in deep and approximately 6.5 ft wide. There will be 3 doors that slide on tracks. 3. Addin...

You have done such a great job with your tiny A frame. I am sure you will enjoy it for many years .
Thanks for you kind words over the episodes. It helps keep my spirits up 😁
Thus should have more views! Again, love it! And happy belated new year! -Deek
Truly you are an inspiration to all. Do you have a list of tools and materials? How many days /weeks took to solo build? Thanks
I’ll work on getting that together 😄 Unfortunately having to drive 9 hour round trip each time and working mostly on weekends and holidays it took about a year to get it where I could stay overnight. I also had to take everything up a hill on a golf cart (except 4x8 panels/roof few times in the car).
Cannot watch whole video cuz you are all over the place!
It’s the adhd…lol. Thanks for trying 😁
Great video. Keep up the good work. Great progress! The window “swelled “ up perhaps? Thanks for sharing.
What are the measures of A Cabin?
Total with deck is 14x14. Without deck is 10x12. Of that 3x10 is the bathroom and 9x10 is living area.
Awesome! Where did you buy the gas struts?
Amazon. I got the 35 in 100lb struts. The weight is important because it has to match the actual weight the object (wall) is or it won’t work right.
@@Hapitatshelter Thank you so much!!! I am ordering a pair😄
That's a house i could keep clean
Looks like a sweat box to me there's no windows no fans nothing if you want to lose weight I guess that's one way to do it
Thanks Brian for the comment. The windows on the left open and there's a solar fan above that which pulls cooler air from a floor vent on the opposite side of the cabin. I will admit if its raining and everything is closed up it gets sweat boxish pretty quick :) Maybe in the future I will have more power to work with for mini split system.
I love how you sectioned off a mini room! I am just now catching up on your vids incredible to see all the progress!!!
So awesome!!! I want a Joolca so bad. Maybe Santa will bring me one😂
You have been very good! Lol. Look we’re both doing showers at the same time.
Another good one. Keep it up. -Deek
He has adopted you ;-)
FINALLY A VIDEO OVER 10 minssss yayyy!
The next one is over 15 🥳
Hey I have a transforming a frame in NC and would like to learn more on how you sealed off the transforming wall where it meets cabin. Also how you hinged yours. Great build by the way! Chase
Hey Chase! I’m getting ready for another trip to the cabin. I’ll touch on your question in my next video. Basically the polycarbonate butts up against the sides so rain doesn’t come in. There is a gap in places because the wood isn’t straight. I used sticky foam strip to close. Works pretty good.
I just put a video up addressing your question. It's towards the end. Hope this helps!
Another good one! :) -Deek
Hello. What gas struts did you buy I need some for mine?

Again, great work! (I think my comments are being taken down for some reason). -Deek
WHAT!!! Oh no, I need all the comments I can get . It really helps motivate me 🕺
Anyway you can give us longer videos?
Thanks for your comment. :) What would be more helpful/interesting? If I did longer Timelapse’s or talking video to explain what I’m doing?
Another good vid! Love seeing the progress.... and still would love a guest video in our channel at some point! Keep up the awesome work! -Deek
Thanks so much for the encouragement. I can’t wait to get it in better shape so I can show people what they can do too and return the favor 😊 I’m absolutely reaching out to you after “fixing the wall” to be all clear polycarb and hopefully get the tub in….oh and opening the real door 🫣 Long term I hope to cover wall with 1/4 plywood and add a better water catchment system 😅
Still making progress. I hope your foot/leg heals quickly.
Fix it up and board horses. It's good money and rewarding
Make sure you visit a mental health provider. Than start.
Alas, I lost mental health coverage and my “mental well being day” with the job… good news is land is free and clear and I have home separate from this. I can make a lot of mistake that otherwise would have certainly drive me batty. Low pressure 🤘
👍💪🙏
Don't just buy the land, make sure you also own the timber and mineral rights on it
You have EVERYTHING you need. Most people would be jealous. To hell with corporations. People would love to help you work it in. You will get offers. Be wise. Love this!
Congrats on the new homestead! I totally see the vision.
Thanks Rebecca! It will be a long road but little by little I’ll get there.

🇺🇸Hey, Habitat; Good going! You can't go wrong, buying land. GOD isn't making any more on Earth. That red barn is a plus and worth saving. Your positive attitude and concern, for your Family, is refreshing, in today's world. GOD Bless
Thanks so much! And this land was special to my family. Although my grandparents (and their neighbors) have since passed on, I know my Granddad would get a kick out of seeing what’s being done with “the ole Johnson place” 😊
Love it!!. Looks cozy. Just find out what you can add to the sides so water doesn't come in. They can probably help you at home depot.
Learn permaculture… great advice! I love the Permaculture Principles Guy who draws. I feel like I’m drinking from the firehouse at times :) so much to learn. Thank for your comment, more things to think about 😀😀😀
Nice you have a pond start already. Get it to fill and you can add fish, etc. Solar oven. Start planting an area/pots with things as berry plants and stuff that need to begin growing. Learn to make cuttings for things as grape vines. Figure out how to get tree chips, etc. dropped off for sheet mulching. A family hub is a nice thought. Learn Permaculture.
I like that mini board-and-batten siding. Hope you're off the crutches by now.
Oh I wish! 3 more weeks ☹️And I thought I could keep on going with little upgrades but am pretty much a sloth at this point. Glad to hear from you Big Guy 🙂 I love that chair that you did.
You are making good progress. I really like your window design.
Thanks so much. I really didn’t plan too well in the beginning but it worked it’s way into a frame national window 😬
Μπράβο κοπέλα μου... Πολύ δουλειά σε λίγα λεπτά...
Looking great!
It's been fun to watch your progress on this transforming A-frame. I especially like the video showing the landscaping around it! I bought the plans when they first came out and have been thinking about building ever since. A year ago or so I built a model in SketchUp because I wanted to explore how adding a bug screen/rain screen around the transforming wall would fit. I think these are suggested in the original plans, but I haven't seen anyone include them. Ultimately I think the rain would drain down the side panels and soak through the velcro strip, unless an additional flashing panel directed the flow over to the exterior somehow. Anyways - you're doing great work!
I don’t think I ever noticed the screen before in the plans 😂. I wonder extending the tufftex 6 to 8 inches past the sides of the wall frame would work. It would have to lay properly on top of the sides so it would close. Hearing the rain on the wall is very peaceful and now that I replaced one of the panels with clear polycarbonate, it’s like looking through a huge picture window. It would be nice to see someone try the screen. Would be handy when the mosquitoes came out.
This is coming out great and I LOVE the video- time lapse stuff is always fun! Just subscribed too. Also, would love to feature it on my YT channel too if interested. -Deek
DEEK! Oh my goodness. So glad you found me :) I was going to reach out once I got it a little more complete so yes, defiantly interested. I have a great story...single, 50+ year woman with no build experience. It hasn't been perfect, but people can do this. I knew as a kid I wanted to build on this spot of our family land. I was spinning in analysis paralysis trying to design something myself. I ultimately went with the transforming a-frame and it has been perfect! Glad you like the Timelapse's. One day I may go back and edit the real time footage. The wince on my face the first time I used a miter saw lol...It's a hoot! -Carrie in TN
Floor dimensions?
14x14 with deck and 10x12 for house.
Nice cabin Can you please tell me the size and cost of the cabin?
Overall size with deck is 14x14. Cabin is 10x12. (bathroom took 3x10) I don’t even want to know how much I’ve spent because I made some expensive choices on purpose (ex 1 clear flat polycarbonate panel was 120$ but I could have used the cheaper kind). I’ve seen estimates by some building this plan as low as $700. I’ll try to put together a materials list.
@@Hapitatshelter Thank you for your info So actually total cost is around 700 $ ?
czcams.com/video/8Hkxw2eMJZk/video.html Here is a link for the couple who built it for $700
Kristen Dirksen channel “search mechanical a-frame”
Umm wow why you look like a pro! How’d you learn to do build? I’m about to embark on my own journey too! Awesome work😊
Basically, I watched a lot of CZcams tutorials and gave it a go. I mess up a good bit (hard to see in the Timelapses) but I can usually figure out how to fix my mistakes. It’s very rewarding, you can do it!
loved it
Coming along really well! I love the design of your swing wall
I recently switched out a polycarbonate twin wall with clear 1/16 polycarbonate. I love it! It’s just like a giant glass window without the weight. I’ll replace the other side later. The 1/16 4x8 panels are expensive 😕
Looks great! So bright with white walls. Did you ever find a good solution for swing wall? I still just prop up a ladder that’s been a project I’ve never gotten to yet haha
Yes! Use gas struts. Super cheap and easy to install. I got mine on Amazon bug you have to choose ones that match the weight of your wall.
@@Hapitatshelter very cool thank you!!! I had those on a tear drop trailer before I just didn’t know what they were called😂
So smart that you built the deck off the get go I did mine after the fact yours look so clean and amazing! Where in the world are you located that property looks too cool
Nice!!!
Amazing what one girl (and sometimes your brother) can accomplish. Speechless.
😁cool. thanks 4 vid, was looking for different ways of building A-frame, decided to move, found spot that will let me build any 'temp' structure as long as its 'wood' for farm/work house and use as residence... fell in love with a-frame... so just figuring out what i need , and how big budget allows...so watching step.b.step vids like urs its easier to visualize dimentions and timber needed ect... so yeah, really helpful !😁 thanks.
I modified a set of plans by Deek Dickerson ( I think it was $29) which helped a lot to know what I needed.
@@Hapitatshelter ohhhh. ok ! cool. thanks. i check that out. that would make it easier. having actual plans, to show city.office what i intend to build before building, just in case of weird local bylaws, like canada.. min/max m2 so you dont need permit if its lower than 196cm..then it seen as storage shed ect... stuff like that ...cus its gonna be rural portugal... and portugees is not easy language...lol...pictures will help..definately. thanks for the info. seen the channel vids... looking good...i was gonna build one 1 step bigger...not much though... someth. basic but prepped to expand on during rain season boredom( no winter there).
Love the tiny transforming A frame! I recently purchased Deek's plans and I have been thinking of building a backyard get a way. You have done a great job with your build.
It’s so rewarding. You will love having a backyard getaway ☺️
