for those confused about how old school is but isnt rules-light at the same time - modern dnd traded in a lot of the game system rules bloat from AD&D, and took on character and class ability bloat. This results in a lot of choice paralysis, build-centric players playing build-centric games, and raised generations of players who only think to do things based on what their character sheet says. old school DnD doesnt turn socializing into an attack roll like modern DnD does, so it's far more important for players to describe what actions and behaviors they take on to persuade, deceive, or intimidate NPCs.

In my Australian opinion, Britain refers to the Island. They are the British Islands, with Britain being the Largest of the Islands. It is General Information, covering many different countries and cultures. Ireland is the Second Largest island, so calling it Britain is not wrong, but also not correct. It's all about how correct you want to be.

I mean, TECHNICALLY you can call 3/3.5 old school now because it came out 30 years ago, god I just made myself feel old saying that. I played some 2e DnD with a friend, but we mostly played Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. I played Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, and found Neverwinter Nights, which had me hooked forever on DnD. I have LOTS of books for 3/3.5 but I've always wanted to go back to older styles. I'm just now getting into 1e/2e DnD and might even run a campaign in the near future with those older styles, so this video is awesome for that!

Idk why Thac0 is so difficult for people to understand. There is literally a table that has AC -2 to 9 in the book. Just write it down and stop overthinking it lol

There’s no edition of D&D i would run as-written, but 2e is easiest to fix. Ascending AC & attack bonus instead of THAC0, then grab a few feats for warrior classes from 5e. A bit more hp for overnight rests, & a save vs death at zero hp, & you’re good to go. Also: give XP fr monsters slain & for gold _spent,_ so they, you know, spend it.

As Malcolm you can sometimes (depending on rolls) immediately vassalize the isles and isle of man. Pretty easy to nab Northumbria early, and pick up the north after, as Hadrada is weak if he wins. He also starts with a courtier stella dynn carrick, scots and also woth the trait quick, and confidant iirc, shes and excellent guarian and normally spymaster. None of his 3 sons have quick, so any you produce, youll have to manoeuvre to the throne. He has a half brother landed in england, Northamptonshire. Where his full brother, Donald 'The Fair' is at court. He's good to try and get home land him and swap too, or even land in england and swap to at the start. Try unite the the thrones with him. Also allying with the half brother and marrying Margaret allying her brother and scheming to get her or him on the throne of england is a fun one. Not sure if you mentioned but the moray line is the one that the real life macbeth is from. Also andrew de Moray, the real brains behind stirling bridge who died from wounds sustained there. Hed been fighting england in the north and northeast for a while before Wallace came about in the lowlands and the 2 joined forces. Lulach is a good start as really you can go wither way, become loyal or take power. I once allied with hadrada, he won. My grand son inherited both scotland and England. Id conquered ireland and the english king had wales, giving me an instant empire. Malmure of Atholl, Malcolm's legitimate bastard brother, again, play it loyal, marry the previous mentioned Stella, found your own cadet branch, go for gold, maybe try install Donald on the throne. Theres plenty marriage options for good allies, france, william, hadrada. You can really make yourself an established force quickly. Norway are always warring so stealling the northern isles isnt difficult. Ireland is ripe for the taking if you're quick giving you means to go head to head with england/wales/normandy/norway, down the road. providing you've built well and maintaned alliances.

I read the title and thought it'd be awesome to see someone ruin old school D&D and then I realized this wasn't that kind of video.

Just started the series but figured i would comment here as you are more likely to see it, you sound very similar to “Der FM Scribe” and both channels have talked about moving to wisconsin around the same time and I was just wondering if you controlled both channels. If so then you play 2 of my favorite games and i’m hoping for more Wunderteam content!

Great video! I am sure I played some AD&D (My Dm was my Dad, and has been playing since the 80's), but I cut my teeth on 3.5/Pathfinder. I love the role playing heavy and descriptive, heroic, problem solving world of classic. Thank you!

I love playing as the roman emperor in 1066, give eudokakia the duchy of trace, seduce her call the georgians, marry your daughter to the Serbian genius(matrilinealy), put on the learning focus and increase the food for the health buff, make lots of light horse man(extort vassals and sell titles if you if you have the perks)

unfortunately this game is not easy like CK3: when an inexperienced player wants to take on Rome or Carthage, especially as Epirus, they will get killed. but we will see 😅 the game works just as well if you wanna roleplay as ck3 (less character interactions, but more traits, bloodlines and flavour), but while in ck3 you can sit, chill, and play medieval sims in peace, here - you will be declared multiple wars, especially if your nation is small.

Please do Millenium Dawn of Hearts of Iron IV as South Africa, and restore it to the powerhouse that it once was.

To be fair to skills, 1e AD&D had a secondary skill list on p12 of the DMG and 2e carried that list over and added non-weapon proficiencies. The skills in 3.5e and 5e are an extension of that. Great video!

Seeing this video is another reminder, why my old second edition books will not leave the bookshelf any time soon. It's fine having the old editions in a collection, but I wouldn't enjoy playing them now as much better versions are available. Rolling for stats, XP for looting instead of milestone leveling, backup characters... I wont have any of these in my games ever again.

Insight is just a Wisdom check. The only time there is a difference is when you have proficiency in insight. So yes, you can do insight checks in 1e/2e; the DM just asks for a wisdom check and adjudicates the results. Same with investigation (an Intelligence check), etc.

I've put The Plantaganets book you recommended on my Christmas list. I have a book recommendation for you: The Greatest Knight by Thomas Asbridge; it's a bio of William Marshal. I've just started a run as Earl of Wiltshire for another historical playthrough as the family of William Marshal. I've been itching to do a one county run and this seemed perfect. Having done a couple playthroughs (ie complete ones to 1453; I've done a lot of aborted runs) I can say I definitely prefer 1066, only because the 1066 start tends to play out across the world in at least a semblance of historical accuracy. The 867 border gore just never ends, in my last 867 run it took until about 1250 for the kingdom of France to even appear, and England took even longer. Ireland made a brief appearance and the HRE, Scotland and Norway never even happened. Eastern Europe was a border gore mess from start to finish. The history nerd in me just can't get immersed properly in the 867 start, even though having those extra 200 years provides so much more story for your dynasty; it's a shame they didn't somehow tone the border gore down once you hit 1066 from an 867 start.

Recent playthrough facing off against Mongol Empire made me wish for deeper diplomacy mechanics. Imagine being able to do a diplomatic mission to unite smaller kingdoms to your cause: ie they bend the knee to you to band together to defeat the Mongols on the condition you grant them back their independence after you win, except you get the option to go back on your word and keep them as vassals, potentially leading to civi war that threatens to collapse the empire you just fought so hard to protect.

Favorite moment was when he tried to romance his wife, but it just didn't work out :(
