I discovered James Blood in about '82 or so, right after I discovered Ornette. "You mean there's a guitar player who plays like this and they've got an album together??" Followed him since then, only saw him live once. One of the greats. Such specail music to me.

Thank you for this synch. Now I can listen AND watch at the same time! Great to see Mick again. His recounting this time with this band were a mix of learning, affirmation and revelation, watching Pat come into his own, the chemistry of Moses the jokester, Swallow the voice of experience, Gary the fountain of knowledge. Mick would be plagued by self doubt as he wrestled with performing each night. One night he confided to Gary "I'm afraid that every night you'll discover that I don't know what I'm doing and you'll fire me. I'm terrified of the stage. How do you do it?" and Gary told him something that changed his life. "Look up. Look at the audience. Look to the back of the room, find one person-and play to them." That may have been the one most life changing thing Mick took from his time with this band. Shortly after this concert, he left the band, believing that his time with the ensemble had come to a close with the emergence and rising star of Pat Metheny had made him feel redundant.

Falling Grace! Such a time of change and discoveryl They were changing the face and sound of the music with each time they played, each player so young yet individually creating the soundscape of the future of improvised music. Mick would tell me about the ways his time in this band encapsulated the dynamics of being family, artists, friends and youthful adventurers. They would create sculptures with their instruments on stage, each show beginning with a visual nod to creating something balanced, new, unexpected and dangerously precarious. Mick's time with Swallow at this time sealed a lifetime bond with Swallow with whom he'd cherish to his death.

I saw them up in Ames in the 70’s. Nana was sitting on the floor and appeared to be just jiggling his hands amongst a bunch of things strewn on the floor around him but the sounds that filled the small room were what I’d imagine the Amazon jungle must sound like. Seeing a panther crouched low behind him wouldn’t have surprised me
