The Land Cruiser’s Biggest Weakness
In this video I troubleshoot and fix a common failure point on high mileage 100 series Toyota Land Cruisers: the Hydraulic Brake Booster.
The exact same issue (and Brake Booster Assembly) is found on early 2000s Tacomas and 4Runners.
Difficultly: 2/5
Cost: $100-$1300, depending on whether you refurbish or replace
Time: 4 hours
Part numbers:
OEM Brake Booster: 47050-60043 ($1300)
OEM Motor & Accumulator: 47070-60010 ($750)
Motor (aftermarket only): 47960-60010 ($100)
OEM Gasket: 44785-60010
Another option for the motor I’ve heard of is to contact Andy Le of the UJZ100 Facebook group. Apparently he’ll send you a refurbished motor for around $500 after rebate (sending him your broken motor)

Tools:
- gloves, rags, protection from corrosive break fluid
- 12mm deep well socket
- socket extensions.
- universal joint
- Dot 3 break fluid (2 quarts)
- 10 flange wrench

    Nice video. I have a 2004 with only 72k miles and my break light just came on. I’m trying to locate the issue. Question: what is the normal duration of the booster during pump activation? Mine runs for about 5 seconds (audible) with each pump of the break. Thanks in advance.

    • @JungleCatt
      @JungleCatt Před měsícem

      Turn the car off and press the brake 40 times to let all the pressure out of the system. Turn the key to the “on” position (without the engine running so you can hear). It should run between 30-40 seconds

    • @JungleCatt
      @JungleCatt Před měsícem

      But if you have a brake light only an no buzzer, it’s probably not an issue with brake pressure. Also, your LC is super rare with such low miles! Unicorns like that sell at a big premium!

      @@JungleCatt Thanks for your prompt reply. I have first-hand experience with the loud "siren" that goes off in the cabin when the booster fails! I drove a 2000 LC for 300k miles and had to replace the booster ($$) at around 200k miles. This time just the brake light is on. Fingers crossed! PS. I'm the second owner at 65K miles, no rust (and I had to pay a premium!)

      @@JungleCatt Thanks, Jungle Catt. I originally tried the brake pumping technique to drop the pressure, but almost immediately encountered a "hard stop" on the peddle (4 or 5 pumps) and concluded I was no longer moving fluid. @FLcoachtony. The work you would save by doing those things as well would be the time to takes to lift the car, take the wheel off (needed for calipers) and take then drive flanges off (first step for rotors). That’s probably only a few minutes so don’t feel like you need to to it all at once, but you certainly can. You can reference my wheel bearings video to get a sense of what else is required to replace the rotors. You’ll want to repack and torque the wheel bearings (55mm socket) and maybe replace them while you’re in there. czcams.com/video/XNKLaaUNZHI/video.htmlsi=pFIyV3g2vAfXeyXh

      Did you have a 2.5 lb hammer and a chisel? I found that combo to work really well.

    Good work, i appreciate you making this video for us. I really wish you would have included footage of repacking that hub and the final torque down towards the end but i must have been hard to do all that alone. Im just more of a visual learner type but ... Regardless, im still grateful. Subscribed for more.
