Waste Warriors
India
Registrace 1. 10. 2012
We're here to clean up India, one bin and one mind at a time! We are a not-for-profit NGO in the field of solid waste management. We take an integrated approach to solving these huge problems of waste mismanagement, and waste littering, dumping, and burning, wherever we go. We have young teams working with formal waste workers and informal waste pickers in Dehradun, Rishikesh, Dharamshala, and in the eastern landscape of Corbett Tiger Reserve. If you want to help out, do your bit, or just connect us to the right people, do get in touch. Let's clean India together!
Moving Mountains: Community-Owned Solutions for Waste & Climate Action
Waste Warriors, a decade-old organisation has been working on inclusive, participatory, and sustainable solutions to waste management in the Indian Himalayan Region.
We share with you, our first-ever brand film that encapsulates those solutions and how all the stakeholders and the communities we serve are taking waste and climate action.
=======
Due to their religious significance, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh are known as ‘Dev Bhoomi’ or the ‘Land of the Gods’. They are characterized by beautiful landscapes featuring several peaks, wildlife sanctuaries with rich biodiversity and gleaming rivers. Two of the most important rivers in the country, the Ganga and Yamuna, originate in the glaciers of Uttarakhand.
Tourism-related activities in the Indian Himalayan Region generate over 8.4 million MT of waste per annum. This is projected to increase rapidly over the next few years as the tourism boom continues.
Local consumption patterns have also changed with the consumption of single-use plastics, this leading to an increase in non-biodegradable waste generation. Due to a lack of proper collection and processing systems, over 60% of this waste is dumped or burned in the open. When waste is dumped in these eco-sensitive areas, it generally ends up in our forests or water bodies, impacting the various species of wildlife in the region.
Plastic pollution has reached everywhere, from the highest point on land, Mount Everest, to the lowest point in the sea, Mariana Trench. Unfortunately, the marginalised communities & wildlife in these eco-sensitive regions are the most vulnerable to the impacts of waste!
This is the war that we, Waste Warriors, choose to fight every single day, as long as it takes to find an inclusive, participatory, and sustainable solution to the waste management crisis in eco-sensitive areas of the Indian Himalayan Region.
In line with our objectives, we have designed interventions in broadly four categories, namely:
● Zero Waste Program
● Research and Advocacy
● Community Activation
● Dignified Livelihoods
