The game tries to portray the red army as evil without being nazi apologists. Which fails because most people will look at the third reich and agree with what the red army does in the game. Because the game doesn’t distort history and pretend nazis were something they’re weren’t it ends up vindicating the atrocities that it tries to smear the red army with

I have to say, I do not at all understand this extended criticism of Druckmann talking about the moment that inspired the story. Artists do that all the time, and having greater context for where a story came from in the artist's mind is always a good thing for analysis. Criticizing Druckmann for this has an overwhelming overtone of just, "Ah, Israel makes me feel uncomfortable," and like, yeah, it should. Druckmann isn't talking about this moment with pro-Israeli slogans, and he didn't put out a piece of art that champions Israel, this is a man raised in a culture reckoning with the hatred and violence done by that culture and the parts of that he internalized. Why are we allowed to do that in America but he isn't? Because Israel makes westerners feel bad? I've read the Vice article, which tries very hard to make the case that a game that is very clearly interested in portraying both sides as violent, that casts as it's most evil villain the leader of the faction the article claims stands in for Israel, as pro-Israel. It also, off-topic, brings up crunch, which in the context reads as nothing more or less than a thinly-veiled effort to turn the audience on Druckmann before the actual conversation has even begun. The only truly potentially valid criticisms are that the Seraphites reflect stereotypes of Palestine and that the Jewish temple section presents the survival aspects of Jewish identity in isolation in an effort to bring the audience onto the side of Israel as a nation permanently under siege. The claim that the Seraphites represent Palestinian stereotypes is utterly undercut by the fact that the only example cited that indicates a prejudice against one side, rather than just portraying a neutral cultural element (a cultural focus on martyrdom, which is even framed as humanizing in the scene, and feels directed at a western audience as a parallel to Christ, i.e. expected to be received very positive) or taking a world-building element from a real world example of how to fight against a superior force (tunnels and sky bridges) is literally from documents being printed by the fascist remains of the American government. I'm sorry, are you reading the documents printed by FEDRA as the moral statement the game is trying to make? With regard to the Jewish temple section, the article rather disregards that opening up, exploring, and ultimately deconstructing the Jewish survivor identity is the stated fucking point of Druckmann's story. Can we take you to the same place of hate that I was in when I heard about those two IDF soldiers? Can I make you feel hatred and then guilt like I did? So I find it hard to take the claim that a section in the first hours of the game, in the immediate aftermath of Joel's death where that hatred should be strongest for the player, invoking the Jewish survivor identity is supposed to be a moral statement as opposed to making that parallel in its darkest form so it rings through the rest of the story. Finally, all of these criticisms fail to reckon with the fact that Ellie, the main POV character, is an outsider to both these groups. In all, I think the criticism of Druckmann is vastly overblown (at least this criticism, I understand he has since taken a pro-Israel stance in the current conflict, which we can dissect). But as far as what's in TLoU2, if you want to read the game in the context of his comments, it reads as an Israeli man reckoning with the hatred and violence done by his nation and the way he has internalized and even cheered on that hatred and violence. Am I supposed to hate him for that?

The North Dakota cop isnt a sad sack waste of a man. Hes a mirror for Max, a constructive charity worker with a living family. Their final conversation in the airport makes that clear. They're parallels. Who's doing more good in the world is an interesting question at the end of the game; the quiet, milquetoast, mission tourist, or the one man tornado on a crusade.

It also means I want to enjoy it properly, so it takes energy to turn it on and engage myself in it. Rather than allow the media/project/whatever to engage me. So- 'to much effort, I'll save it for later' is a thought that joins the fray. Lovely. 😞 🤔 Fun podcast as always, I love listening to the scattered thoughts of people who focus on details. I really like the commentary on Otacon's storyline. As someone who got into the series heavily pre--MGS4, there was kind of a hope that E.E. was going to be a big shatter point for Otacon. His sister's death at the hands of Vamp, the big trauma stuff, there was a sense that it was building to something. I was a very big fan of the character in my younger days. And then early character designs leaked for MGS4 and he was this very shadowy mysterious figure, you got this sense that he had been galvanized into something else. And then the game dropped and uh. Yeah. So its a storyline that feels VERY gratuitous in hindsight, and was compounded by MGS4-5. And I think its kinda Kojima at his worst? Both in lack of growth and casual violence against women and uh...Peeing.
