Visiting The World's Most Tilted Tower
zhlédnutí 7KPřed rokem
If you thought the Leaning Tower of Pisa was the only tilted building worth seeing, then you haven't heard of their rival, the Leaning Tower of Suurhusen. This peculiar church, constructed in the small village of Suurhusen in Germany, dates back to the 13th century and boasts a dramatic lean even more impressive than its counterparts. An engineering headache of epic proportions, the Leaning Tow...
Let's Build The Perfect City
zhlédnutí 590KPřed rokem
Over the last hundred years, most societies have experienced an incredible increase in wealth. One would think that our cities would reflect that, but in many ways, they don’t. What is currently being constructed is by many viewed as inferior to what was once built. Why is it that the buildings of the past are often found to be more attractive? In this video, I will take a closer look at how we...

So basically: -Make other meens of transport more desirable to lower car users. -Build building in the style that came through 1000 yrs of building -Build roads that direct you to a public building as a monument -Build original villages that have tiny allies and such -When you want to expand just repeat what you already have instead of expanding on it -Building on the side of the sea don't matter architecturally cuz everybody is busy with the sea itself

I am dutch, and i dont like this new development. It looks ugly and to much america style. Also more density is required as amsterdam faces a housing crisis. I wish they made it in a traditional way with local materials, with traditional architecture. This seems for the rich people and not for the average person. Amsterdam needs higher density development for their housing shortage. France did it really nice with plesir robbinson, they know how to make buildings look beautiful. This is 🤢🤮

Insightful video. All I'm going to add is that urban planners should be required to take a course in molecular biology. There are rules for everything cosmic, and planners violate these rules constantly with ego, grandiosity, and with "engineer's disease", or the idea that you can stupid proof everything with technology and "innovation"...It don't work...

I did enjoy the video and subscribed, but i dont understand all the fuss against the post-war buildings, they looked like that for a reason, they were designed to be as functional as possible and not unnecessary details since the world simply wanted to build up the world as fast as possible. Why waste huge amounts of money on 2 good looking buildings when u can build 100 for the same amount, they only cared about housing everyone as fast as possible, I’m sure very few if any liked how they looked, but couldn’t care less if they didn’t had to be out in the rain instead

So when you say 'build the perfect city' do you mean greenfield development of a new city on the outskirts of an existing one? But with mixed use development housing job centers along side the same people who work those jobs? Or maybe take an empty plot of land in the middle of nowhere and start from scratch, somehow convincing a developer or a nation state that it's suitable for a new city laid out and built from the ground up. Or do you want the government to tear down our ugly neighborhoods to make way for new boulevards Haussmann style? Where will the displaced people go? How will this impact marginalized communities? Or alternatively do you want to slowly implement a plan to have this city build up over centuries like Vienna did? In which case good luck getting a style guide enforced for 100 years. I think you have some good ideas, but short of a new revolutionary government and massive social upheaval I don't see my city whose population grew by 1% last year being able to make rapid change, especially considering they're bankrupt. As is the federal government.

The perfect City = Not a City. LOL. A town or village. All the things people like about a City are not City-ish, they are Town-ish. unique squares and landmarks, cosy areas, and non-repetitive, short lanes and roads are features of Towns. People don't like towering skyscrapers unless they are near the top to have the view, from the street level they are just giant Brutulist monuments, and often as private spaces they are not open to public access anyway, so kiss the promise of the view goodbye. The lure of the City is the opportunities, this was a real feature of Cities prior to two recent developments: The internet (allowing remote work for a large swath of humanity) and online shopping (allowing access to millions of products, far more variety than any City can now offer). Modern Cities have grown up around cars, and they bend to the will of the traffic. Roads, expressways, parking lots dominate land use in "modern" Cities. The biggest problem with Cities, there are too many people in them! LOL. like the famous experiment with Rats in a tight enclosure - even with all the food, water air things they "need for life" the Rats die off. People too do not like to be too tightly packed together, and they suffer behavioural problems being to densely stacked. Why is there so much crime in Cities and nearly none in small Towns? In Cities people are anominous, in Towns you know nearly everyone, and if you don't know a person you know someone they too know. On a final note, not every City in the world has summer weather all year around, I watch these videos and see nice Cities - in summer - that I know are not nice once the snow comes. Tall buildings brings street level winds, and wide streets with narrow sidewalks - YUP all the snow is pushed towards the people so the cars have a clear path - because Cities are designed for Cars, not for people.

One detail I'd like to add about Paris that most people miss, while the materials, proportions and overall color palette is shared by most buildings, the actual style of building is not uniform, it is this near perfect ratio of uniformity and individuality between buildings that makes Paris so beautiful and prevents it from becoming too boring.

The paradox of diversity is rooted in the same negligence as the desire for justice, equality, and deconstruction. When you refuse to accept the realistic constrains, your solutions will be bugged, no matter how hard you try to embellish and justify your ideology. But!! It is good to ask why do these desires rise up and what were the mistakes we made when facing them? How can we not repeat those mistakes over & over again as we've done so far? Great content my friend.

We don't need to build the "perfect city", the cities that existed and evolved naturally over centuries were the perfect expression of the people who lived there and the nation that encompassed them. The best thing to do is leave old cities alone, and restore them to their former glory

  • @microcolonel

One way to improve this without being too tyrannical is to impose a tax on architectural expression outside of the orders of the locality. Corinth had orders, Rome had orders, Constantinople had orders; and some cities in North America used to have them as well (look at older brick buildings, particularly on the lintels, in Toronto). Instead of zoning height limits, sky rights above other ground parcels should be priced into the land.
