I remember the Sentosa monorail! Lived with my family in Singapore from 1982 until 1989. My dad even took me on the cable car over to Sentosa.

As a teenager I worked on the track on this bridge, on a number of days. No harnesses, just be careful! The track is laid in ballast, sitting on top of wooden boards. Using a jackhammer to pack the ballast is interesting because every now and then part of the boards gives way, and the jackhammer attempts to drop through.

I don't live in Singapore, I live in the US, but remember going there many times to visit Mom's family. I remember the last time I went to Singapore, back in June or July 2018, my cousins taking me to Sentosa with my brother (and his now wife) along with our sister. It was not what I remembered as a kid in the 90s and 2000s. I do remember going to Underwater World, a shame that they closed it. I've got pictures of everyone sitting on the Sentosa letters. This video was awesome and brought back nostalgic memories. Thanks!!

My dad sailed for maersk on Hong Kong-Singapore-Bangkok & was around when sentosa was starting to take shape & they filled sand in here & there... He told the construction was crazy... My visits in 22' & 23' taught me one thing: might as well walk back to vivo when universal is closing.

The good about the monorail is, you can't dismantle the track easily after the line has been closed so that can be a reminder that there were a monorail. Different story about conventional train, after the line is closed, you can dismantle the track & redevelop the area like in my country so if we want to know the history, there's no trace about it. Even if you can trace it, the local people that stay there will be force you to leave the area & erase any proof of the old track you've found with a threat.

I remember riding round the old monorail back in 1993 which was the first time I visited the magnificent country of Singapore. Sentosa was really beautiful back then. I need to visit again!

I have had the pleasure of using the new monorail during Sentosa visits. But never knew there was an old "around the island" monorail. Wonderful to watch the video and knowing I learned something new today about amazing Singapore :)

Oh wow, I had no idea the old monorail is no more! I rode it in 2001 and 2003 during my visits to Singapore. I think I have a field recording of the monorail announcements.

I cannot believe 1994 was already 30 years ago. Back then we used to stay either in YWCA or sharing an apartment flat around Orchard rd. To get to Sentosa there are 2 options, the manual-door monorail or the cable car, in which both started around WTC area

Visiting Sentosa Island was a must every time my family visited Singapore. As a kid in the 90s, the monorail was the highlight of my trip. Very sad to know it was removed totally and not upgraded or replaced. Are there any surviving train on display or storage?

They should have expanded the monorail, not destroyed it. The monorail was one of the best parts of Sentosa, just ask anyone who used it. I spent 5 days on Sentosa in 1984, camping illegally in the jungle in my tent. I loved the monorail for its open air cars and its route through the jungle canopy. All that was lost once greedy businessmen got their hands on it and decided an expensive, air-con, all enclosed and VERY boring monorail would replace it.

As former flight attendant with Lufthansa German Airlines, flying to Singapore almost once every month from 1982 - 2015, the old Monorail brings back countless memories about countless visits to Sentosa Island the way it used to be: a very beautiful, natural place where I spent countless days of my layover in Singapore. Enjoying home made, freshly prepared fried rice right next to the beach. Auntie and uncle who ran their small food stall always welcomed me with a warm hearted smile when coming back to have lunch. I really miss them. Those days are gone. I do not reject new developements, but Sentosa was over-developed, like many other places in Singapore. Today, when sometimes visiting Singapore as a retired flight attendant and as a ordinary tourist, I never visit Sentosa again.

i miss the monorail

Remember using it on holidays. Was a nice circuit. Nice and cool on a hot day. Saved a lot of walking up and down hills (although I think there was also a courtesy bus that did a similar circuit as well). Tbh they have ruined Sentosa with their over development now. Much greener back then and felt less part of the city.

You did not cover if there any remnants of the 2 fake soldiers with flashing lights that would "shoot" passengers on the monorail near Fort Siloso station. I remember those 2 fake soldiers were a highlight on monorail trips and we would fake shooting back at them.
