Israel takes over the borders of the pre-existing legal entity for which is was taking over - the Palestinian Mandate, or rather what was left of it after Arabs demanded the major portion of it. The fact that Jordan stole the West Bank and Egypt stole Gaza in their war of aggression against Israel in 1948 does not change Israel's initial borders. Jordan and Egypt were the occupiers of Israeli land from 1948-1967. The reason for the Israeli government not proclaiming its borders is because they naively had a policy of trying to trade territory for peace - a policy that failed miserably as is evidenced today. Even Hitchens is naive here believing that Israel can have secure borders with Islamic Jihad on its borders and trying to appease these warmongers.
