Autumn in Akita: A cycling adventure in Japan's Akita Prefecture
In late October 2018 I spent a few days riding around Japan's Akita Prefecture as a (paid) guest of NorthTime Bikeway. What I discovered was a beautiful and wonderfully diverse land with plenty to offer cyclists of all abilities.
The video features professional racer Tiff Cromwell (tiffanycromwell.cc/), photographer and Eskapee (www.eskapee.com/) publisher Damian Breach, and blogger Ryan Miu (www.bgradecyclist.com/).
I also wrote two blog posts about this trip. You can find them at the links below:

Perfect weather, amazing company and a ride with real meaning to it. In late October 2016, my best mate Nick and I headed to north-east Victoria to ride a 165km loop - the same loop we rode as part of the Box Hill High School Bike Camp in high school between 1999 and 2004. Back in the day we did the route in five days; this time we did it in one. And what a day it was. Ride report and photos: t...

    Just had an email from BN about next years 3 peaks. So, I've had a little trip down memory lane and found this video. It's brought back a few memories.. 2010 was the only 3 peaks I attempted. As you know, it was terrible weather. Going up hill we could stay a little warm, but the section from the top of Hotham down to Dinner Plain was the coldest 30 minutes I've ever been on a bike. At times, the whole body was shaking so much it was an effort to control the bike. We had a long break at DP, working out what to do. But after almost 2 hours, when we couldn't secure tranport back to the start with bikes, and body temperature had returned to some sense of normalty, we decided to push on. I'm glad we did. Certaintly very tough conditions, but we made it in the end. Being the first year, the time limit was a little loose, so my 13 hr 4 minutes was good enough to get me a finishers jersey. In retrospect, the extened half time defrost was defintiely way too long.. It was an epic journey. One that has scared me away from trying it again. If I could guarantee some good weather, it might be something to try again. Maybe...

    I'm wanting to do this climb in early winter this year, I'm wondering how safe is descending down Donna.. I've Donna 4 times previously, but never in winter...I would be hard on the brakes all the way down.. Love your thoughts here

    • @theclimbingcyclist
      @theclimbingcyclist Před 2 lety

      I haven’t found the descent to be unsafe, but it is very unpleasant. Bring a lot of warm, dry clothes for the descent. I usually take a musette with fresh gloves, scarf and maybe even more. Even better: get someone to collect you at the top 🤣 I love descending but this is one descent I’m always happy to skip in winter

    Hi mate, I've done this recently with some difficulty, being a 50+ cyclist and a beginner. Can you advise how hard it is to continue the ride up to Sky high via Olinda from Sassafras. Thanks

    • @theclimbingcyclist
      @theclimbingcyclist Před 3 lety

      Nice work! From Sassafras through to Olinda is much the same as the 1 in 20 - a little bit steeper as you approach Olinda, but not much. After a short downhill out of Olinda, you'll turn left onto Ridge Road. This is quite a bit steeper. There are a few sections that are noticeably steeper than the 1 in 20 on your way to Sky High. Take it slowly and ride a small gear and you should be fine though!

    Even know us Cyclists have got right of way in some of situations alright because the car drivers put there indicators on at the last minute and started merging over in front of you sometimes it's actually safer to back off on your own speed slightly and brake enough to just let them in to turn in front of you even ifs illegal and there suppose to legally Give Way to the Cyclists doesn't always mean that they will follow that road rule alright. And I'm only saying this from experience alright as I have almost nearly been hit myself a number of times in these sorts of situations alright. 🙂

    I used to ride down Chapel Street everyday. Cars do that all the time. I mean, every trip. In that case he wanted to go around the tram, but often drivers suddenly veer into the cycle lane for no good reason. Sometimes I think they might do it to get a better view of the traffic ahead or something. Other times it is just poor lane discipline. I have stopped riding on Chapel Street. Now I go via the backstreets, much safer and quicker.
