My Online Anxiety & OCD Course - Five years of intention, energy and desire, here's my story...
Hi, I'm John Glanvill. I started as an engineer but later became a complex anxiety therapist after overcoming my struggles with anxiety, OCD, and depression. www.patreon.com/theanxietyspecialist
This video is an extract from my anxiety recovery course, where I share how I motivated myself to write, film, and edit my anxiety and OCD treatment program.
It's the story of how I used Exposure and Response Prevention Therapy (ERP) on myself to challenge my old beliefs and fears. My brain kept telling me I couldn't be a writer or presenter, but I decided to ignore those thoughts and take action towards my intentions despite lacking resources, skills, and experience.
What amazed me was that I could learn as I went along and didn't need to have all the answers beforehand. I realised that real-world experiences, not books or media, were where I'd find the truth for myself.
Essentially, I applied ERP to my life by exposing myself to what aligned with my desires and ignoring any responses that arose from my mind or body, thus preventing them from stopping me from taking action.
I also discovered that I had been deeply conditioned as a child to follow authority and do as I was told, when in fact, I could pursue anything and become whoever I wanted to be.
So, I created this course over five years, aiming to share everything I knew about anxiety and how to overcome it.
It's really just common sense teachings that we were never taught in our younger years.
I'd love for you to check it out here www.patreon.com/theanxietyspecialist

What should I do, I get intrusive thoughts now and they distract me causing the symptom of freezing in social situations. I NEVER had that before any tips? If I expose myself to triggering social situations (dating for eg.) I don’t want to freeze 😭 are there any things I can do to combat this freezing maybe calm my nervous system down so I don’t freeze? Appreciate your help!

    • @TheComplexAnxietySpecialist
      @TheComplexAnxietySpecialist Před dnem

      There are no mistakes - only failures to take action. We can only ever be responsible for the input of our actions, never the outcomes - but people with OCD want certainty in an uncertain world, that is why they are so scared, exhausted and stuck. They are living life wrong. Life is for taking action just to see what WILL happen, not listening to your brain which thinks it KNOWS what will happen, which it doesn't.

      @@TheComplexAnxietySpecialist the rest of that is inspired. I made the comment early and slightly as a joke but I did find myself using obsessive compulsive disorder to cope with lack of working memory but I have dyslexia as well so I’m not sure exactly how much it crosses over I often wind up having to go back to the front door at least four times to doublecheck that I’ve locked it and of course it’s only the times when I don’t go back then I find I’ve left it open so yes, I totally get what you’re saying, and a lot of it loops back to being scapegoated, whether it was my fault or not because of working memory very interesting stuff I actually sent it to a couple of old friends who are still trying to figure out why I am the way I am who knows it may actually help if they watch it?

      @@TheComplexAnxietySpecialist would be fair to say that even with using OCD to triple check whether I have done the kind of stuff I might forget I managed to leave the front door open but it had a different point in my routine due to bring bags of shopping and woke to find someone strolling into my house at 6 am in the morning with a very poor and delayed response to my questions of what The fk are you doing? I just thought I’d put my head in he said so quite often there are very real consequences for forgetting to do these things but it’s in the meta also they say these days? OCD tenancies do you have some positives and I guess because I’ve been trying to focus on the positive sides to everything in an attempt at some kind of occupational alchemy I may well have stopped looking at the negatives associated with the comorbid condition…..? ADHD is just ADHD - you will miss things, leave doors open and forget things.... My wife does it all the time, she just accepts it and laughs at herself. Luckily, she lives with me and I love her for who she is. However, ADHD brings her freedom, creativity, and engagement with life - and she has learned to forget the bad things and remember the good things. Don't fight ADHD it is just a brain configuration - you can't really change it but you can accept it.

It’s like the only subject on my mind is anxiety. I’ve also really started to look into if I have ADHD. Thank you so much. This video described my life in perfect detail. By the time I was a teen everyone said I was blank faced and uptight, which I have been since then except for major emotional breakdowns. People only saw me functioning because I put all my work into if for their sake. But inside my mind was absolute torture with racing upsetting thoughts that made me feel disgusting and scared. Pretty much like you said, I obsessively feared that I would somehow do the things I feared and hated the most. And it made me not want to be around others, because somehow they would find out who I really am and hate me for it. It helped so much when I learned that these distressing thoughts are not who I am, but a symptom of my anxiety itself.

    hey john, i recently noticed my subconscious pattern switched up, the ocd trying to throw me back into the old ways of thinking again, i go days without thinking almost at all, just living in the subconscious and body and its wonderful, little things are so enjoyable, but the sometimes i feel like it is reallying trying to tug of war with me and try to make think of things consciously, and if i do it then wants to "punish" me by thinking of whatever the original thought was but in reverse or in opposite, yeah annoying right? Now Im not doing it, because dear god its exhausting and literally causes physical, i just dont get why its still trying to get me to think so much, its very much pesky demon, and i want to understand a little more about the little 8 year old inside, what are your thoughts my friend?

    • @TheComplexAnxietySpecialist
      @TheComplexAnxietySpecialist Před 13 dny

      I would suggest - it is likely one of two issues. Some environmental factor - like wrong job/ no job - wrong relationship/no relationship - boredom etc., therefore something you know needs to be addressed but you haven't stepped into doing it. And the second is mitochondrial health - getting enough energy into your cells - so your body (unconsciously) can sense you are biologically recovering after years of stress (video 4). This is done through sunlight, a ketogenic diet (avoiding carbs and sugars) walking in nature - following your passions etc. Every time anxiety/OCD/depression flares up you need to ask yourself - what needs to change in my life that has been exhausting me? Then change, accept or move away from those stressors. I know me saying this seems simplistic, but it is the truth - though I do know how hard it is to change your life, especially from a place of fear and exhaustion - however, this is your life, so the effort is always worth it in the long run! This is why my course is so full of teaching life skills, courage and direction - to give a person the tools to go out and try.

      Mushrooms are very medicinal. This is why anybody familiar with psilocybin and any other kind of fungi will tell you, "They are alive." They have a very ancient wisdom. To my experience, all mushrooms have always said, "Pay attention to your life. How you think, how you feel, and what will you do with the information that you always knew, but now are seeing in this point of view." This is why mushrooms are so respected in tribal cultures. This mental health treatment works for me too. Half micro doses do the trick for me. At least a few days at a time with lengthy time in between. Never addictive. Thank you for sharing this point!

    This video was so helpful. I randomly typed ocd & adhd as i always felt I've been experiencing more than one disorders, as the details of each matched my feelings. But my ocd brain always convinces me that i don't have any XD. I still remember the exact time when my evil mind took over (as i used to call it before), i used to be a different person before that traumatic incident. And I'm still caught in that loop, I'm unable to experience happiness as when i start feeling happy my mind immediately goes back to that time. I still try to figure out why exactly did that happen & until I don't I'm not able to live freely. No therapists or psychiatrists are able to help me resolve that yet. I always keep on playing different theories in my head & many seem to be the cause yet it can't be that many which takes me back to zero. The incident i refer here is my board exams, i used to be an excellent student back then who was a promising candidate for the boards.. but i wasn't able to hold my pen steadily due to panic attacks.. it was hard to understand bcuz i knew all the answers, i couldn't explain it to others or to myself. After that incident all my life has been going backwards, I'm too afraid to do the things i used to love.. I'm not living as my true self anymore, just borrowing traits from other people to blend in to survive.

    • @TheComplexAnxietySpecialist
      @TheComplexAnxietySpecialist Před 24 dny

      Hi, I am not a doctor; I am an engineer/therapist, so I don't know how the genetic side might operate. However, I might suggest a different perspective. It's my experience that Bipolar is the condition/state (symptom) that people fall into when they become emotionally exhausted from not connecting with life, being their true selves, being in love and having a creative outlet for their life. And the type of person that deteriorates into that state is often the more extroverted, creative, non-conformist, ADHD types (who sometimes are very clever too) - however that aspect of their true nature may have been suppressed in childhood. You might like my video about ADHD here czcams.com/video/ip-fXAoqkik/video.html So, the question you might ask yourself might be this: should my child be born with these traits (and about 20% randomly are), and that is normal! How can I ensure that I raise him to understand that while he may not be "normal" compared to everyone else, he is normal compared to the 20% he is in? They are fun, spontaneous, creative, and social, so he should lead a life that suits his personality and not suppress his uniqueness in childhood to fit in, as doing so will only lead to suppressed anger and frustration. My wife has ADHD. She is an artist, and she loves life. She is not "normal," but she is happy, expressive, and uniquely creative, and people love her natural energy. ADHD is just a brain configuration - and Bipolar is the emotional state they sink into when emotionally exhausted and bored - and being too nice when it is in their nature to be more selfish and hedonistic. Anyway - we are all differen;, we each need to find what works for us and not sheepishly try to fit in! Just a few thoughts :-)

      @TheComplexAnxietySpecialist Před 13 dny

      The only help the limbic system needs - is for the person to live as nature intended, not as the intellect has been programmed to wish for... - Natural food - Sunlight - Engaged with community - Creativity - Work 8 hours, Rest 8 hours, Sleep 8 hours - Only to be thinking when thinking is required - Self-love/respect/worth/integrity/awareness - To be a part of nature, not something that nature should be serving us - To have a dream that inspires you to jump out of bed each morning (either survival or creative passion) All these things come naturally (from the limbic system) when we stop identifying with our logical, reasoning intellect and reconnect with our heart, Soul and divinity - IMHO :-)

      I agree with you wholeheartedly. I believe that in addition to medication, individuals can take proactive steps to reprogram their unconscious mind, adjust their attitudes and beliefs, and enhance self-awareness. This could potentially lead to the retraining of their inner chemistry and the improvement of mitochondrial health within their cells. By investing energy into their cells, they might have an opportunity to break free from their current exhausted cycles. Unfortunately, many individuals seem to exhaust their energy battling the very limitations that confine them, rather than trying new approaches when it's clear that their current methods are not optimal.

    im finally getting around to watching these videos, I went down a bit of a bad spiral this year & am now kind of seeing the light. Things got so bad that I ended up on SSRI's (briefly) against my own judgement & intuition, and tapered off after about 2 months on my own accord. I haven't been on them now since mid may. I saw an OCD specialist too though that didn't work out as I felt like she never took me seriously and even chucked when I told her my theme. She did help me to understand ocd to a degree though, and how I just need not give it power. This has helped a lot but need to dive further into other areas of anxiety such as my agoraphobia. In no means am I perfect and I have a long way to go. What DID draw me to you though was how perfectly you explained ocd, even better than this therapist. Almost immaculately to my experience. I was going through some really, really bad anxiety last year due to where I am in life. Funnily enough a year to this date. This seemed to have stemmed from my job that I would go to day in & out which I know isn't who I am and have most certainly outgrown - But due to agoraphobia and being stuck in the same fkn 10km (which I overcome but seem to slip back & forth), I IGNORED all these feelings because I felt like I didn't have a choice. and there was a clear indicator that this was the issue. I had this feeling of stress in my body that developed that just wouldn't go away and I kept trying to fight through. Eventually my brain pulled out the big guns & it developed into this whole pure OCD thing. Makes total sense. I am still at that same job but that feeling of stress has since dissipated to a degree, I believe because I am now working on ways of getting myself out of that place (or just the place I am in life). Since we briefly spoke in early January about ocd in the comments, I have now started studying a course trying to fix these issues. I have a long way to go, but the journey has begun. I just need to fix my focus, and stop pretending everything is fine. because its not.

    From what I can inter from my experience I was crippled by OCD and anxiety but now I am able to work finely. I will say that the treatment of OCD is not like a take medicine and do therapy type work, it needs work in some other directions also, it's more about knowing oneself more and understanding the core concept of "I am that". What I mean Its primarily an issue with your brain and mind but you should also know that those are not the only things in our consciousness. We say we get repetitive thoughts but tell me what is repetitive in this, your mind will never stop reacting to everything around you unless it understand the emptiness of it all. Like in the deep sleep we achieve such states after which dream initiation takes place and in those dreams you see some reality. I waking states you are plagued by what then? The delusional reality, everything that is happening around you isn't it just another repetition of things? Your awareness is something that is always pure you can keep having pain physical and mental but your awareness of that pain or something can bring out it's true nature then all of pain becomes nothing and what about pleasure it is also the same. Just bring your awareness which is nothing but your curious attention to things and observing things from a curious person's viewpoint you will find the true nature of reality, our mind's nature which seeks to find the causal relationship between things has to be let go off and only then you begin keeping track of things, multiple aspects of things will come to your mind, that is true consciousnes and it is this mind which is healthy which is whole and doesn't feel any bondage because of the thoughts and emotions, it has to completely surrender to one central aspect of living which that of being an observer and nothing else.

    PLEASE HELP!!! I am Spanish and therefore my entire message will be written by a translator. I hope you can understand me. I am Víctor from Spain, I am 20 years old and I have had anxiety since I was little, it used to occur in class, in restaurants, in a movie theater to give some examples... well the fact is, I have been in this hell for 2 years, on May 9, 2022 I I woke up having thoughts that in my life I had had about harming myself, I remember that the day before before going to sleep I read a news story about a boy who took his own life, logic tells me that this could have been a possible trigger, I at the same time At first I was scared because I didn't want to do that nor do I want to and I didn't know what was happening to me, I had a lot of anxiety, my chest hurt, I was short of breath, I felt terrible... in the middle of that hell I thought, well, this is going to be a bad day and Tomorrow I will be fine, because the days went by and it was still the same, even because of the fear I had, I even slept with my mother, imagine... a few days after this, while I was in my room, this thought occurred to me, which I remember perfectly. What if I kill my mother? If after the thoughts of hurting myself I was already bad, imagine after that crossed my mind... literally, I couldn't even see my mother, it was terrible, if before I had anxiety, then after thinking that I had twice as much... investigating why Google I found content about intrusive thoughts and such, at that time while reading about the subject I came across a phrase that helped me at that moment (you are not your thoughts) and that literally eliminated the physical symptoms that I had even though those thoughts were still there. A few days after this I went to the psychiatrist to tell him exactly what I am telling in this message and he told me about impulsive phobias, I went home and a few days after this the typical news that they give at night was on Antena 3's news. Well, well, they talked about a news story about a boy with schizophrenia and what happened to me is that I was literally in shock, I hardly slept that night, literally when I heard that I was like, I have this. I started looking for symptoms throughout the summer and a few more months, in total 4/5 months followed day by day on Google, on CZcams videos of people with schizophrenia, videos about psychotic breaks, about other mental disorders and well from there I am not bad, the following. I literally began to pay attention to sounds and for example I was watching a CZcams video of whatever and if I heard something that could be outside of that video, I would rewind the video to see if I heard it again, that was an example of what What I did and sometimes I continued doing it, I was aware of what I saw or if I saw things out of the ordinary, sometimes out of the corner of my eye I see like a flash and I wonder if you are freaking out in case it is a hallucination, I also read about delusions and paranoia and to give an example, reading that these people think they want to kill them and from then on I have thoughts of that style, "paranoid" thoughts even though I know they are a lie, I don't know if after everything I'm saying Are you finding out what is happening to me or if perhaps in your consultation you have had cases of this style, because in Spanish I have barely found information as if I have found it in English and they relate it to OCD called OCD Going Crazy, but literally that Sometimes I doubt that this could be OCD, this seems serious, I'm afraid it's psychosis or schizophrenia, I'm shit, I need help, it seems like I'm delirious at times, although I repeat, I know that certain thoughts don't make sense... I think that reading symptoms has messed with my head because in my life I have had these thoughts and I think I am very suggestive. 3 psychiatrists tell me that they are impulsive phobias but come on, sometimes it seems like he's really crazy.

    • @TheComplexAnxietySpecialist
      @TheComplexAnxietySpecialist Před měsícem

      Personally, I would try to avoid any medication because a person with ADHD has super sensitive responses to alcohol, medication & recreational drugs (more than the average person) so any medication to try to stimulate the person - works for a day or two, then absolutely exhausts them and makes their anxiety worse. Beta blockers tend to cause a dependancy. Anti-psychotics make you a zombie and the jury is out whether SSRI's actually work or are simply a placebo! The secret is to understand how the OCD operates and then to disarm it through using clever psychology and biology reprogramming. For example, your OCD is an unconscious response - so the only way you can change that is by consciously tricking your unconscious into running new automatic programs. This means you will have to consciously see that logic and reason (of the conscious mind) are not what the unconscious mind uses. However, if you are taught how the unconscious mind operates you can see what you need to do to consciously reprogram it. Then learn new ways to accept your ADHD nature and not fear it - and learn new ways to see the world and interact with it. That is why I have spent 5 years making my OCD recovery course - so a person can learn what is happening to them and what they can do to change themselves. It is here www.patreon.com/theanxietyspecialist - you might be really surprised how much you can do to change yourself. The course is only £10 a month to subscribe to as I wish for everybody to be able to access really professional help at a fair and affordable price as there is far too much anxiety in this world - and there is much you can do about it :-) Best wishes - John
