Great banjolin playing! Where are you from?
Thanks 🙏 from Belgium 😊
What model banjoline is this? Or who is the maker? It is german (zero fret?)
This is a "Marius" banjoline, made by an Italian family in Brussels! (The zero fret is also typical for certain Italian instruments made in Sicily and Rome)
Didn't know you had a 2nd channel dedicated to the banjolin! Nice tune, takes me to the 1920'. You wouldn't happen to have the sheet music would you? Very nicely played Ralf
Hi Enrique, nice to see you here too! :-) Yes I do have the sheet music, but it is written for tenor banjo, so what I play here is transposed (pretending I'm playing on a tenor banjo with CGDA tuning). I'll send you the music with some explanation!
@banjoline Thank you very much for the score and the tremolo tips Ralf. It's very helpful. Really enjoy the sound of the banjolin.
Maestro, sei fantastico!!! 🎶
Mille grazie!!🙏😊
Thank You for the wonderful music. I really would like to see and hear more. It is a little sad to see, though, that this channel has only 136 subscribers. I guess we are 136 odd people? A friend of mine headed a mandolin orchestra for many years, an orchestra which I was part of. We played music from the "Golden Age" almost exclusively. Some of it which are available online from the New York Library in their collection of the Cadenza magazine. In the autumn of 2022 my friend suddenly died and the orchestra died with him. We tried to keep it going but for several reasons it did not work out. Guess that makes me one of the relatively few people today who has been a long time member of a mandoline orchestra?
Very beautiful and well executed Ralph, bravo!
Many thanks 🙏 and I subscribed to your channel too, which apparently I forgot some time ago🙃
@@banjoline wow,I am very honoured! I don't put out anything that well done or recorded as you,but thank you Ralph! Maybe I will learn this piece on guitar, because mandolin well...too hard for me! All the best
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
bellissima melodia e bravi esecutori
Mille grazie, Ermanno, e tanti auguri per capodanno! 🤗
@@banjoline auguri e tanta felicità anche a te, che tipo di banjo hai…? Suona molto bene
@@ermannozappacosta6837 la marca é "Marius". È costruito da 2 fratelli italiani, Mario e Renato, a Brusselle. Erano molto populari e ne hanno venduto tantissimi in Belgio negli anni 40-70. Per me sono i migliori 🙂
Sweet tune!
Ive tried to purchase your book - cant find it anywhere
Is it the Leonardi mandolin banjo method that you are looking for? I found it here, it is freely available on IMSLP as a PDF download: imslp.org/wiki/Methode_pour_Banjoline_ou_Mandoline-Banjo_(Leonardi%2C_Salvator) (public domain)
@@banjoline thank you . I'll have a look .
once again ,i gasp in admiration for this guy. Always with suitable material for banjo mandolin and executed perfectly . Just wow
Spettacolare e Bellissimo!!!❤
Genial...danke. Aus Köln am Rhein.
Saludos desde chile cómo puedo adquirir un banjo de esos
just overawed at the virtuosity of this fellow. Never heard anything close .
what a knockout - this fella is amazing .
It can be played on Mandolin
Yes of course :-)
Bravo . Ive never heard anything so sweet on a banjoline. Youve taken it to a new level for me.
Thanks🙏🙂
@@banjoline what type of plectrum do you use ?
tone, accuracy ,timing - youve got it all mate -and more .
I love that sound! Are your bottom two strings paired with octave higher ones?
Actually no ... this is just normal mandolin tuning GG-DD-AA-EE, the pairs are unison.
Great!
So these instruments can ACTUALLY play music ! That's the first time I see one play in tune with a clear tone...
Yes the good ones can play in tune and have excellent sound quality if well set up. Thanks for appreciating my efforts to improve the banjoline's bad reputation! 😊
Wonderful. Thank you!
Wonderful. Thank you for sharing your music!
Thanks! You also have a nice channel! :-)
@@ralfleenen Oh, thank you for that. I haven't had much free time for my channel. I finished restoring a Houghton & Songs Banjolin and would like to make some videos with it.
WOW Can you do Thunderstruck by AC/DC? You got the chops!
Possibly, but that's not really the style of music I'm good at :-)
@@banjoline ok then maybe Hurt (Nine inch nails) in the style of Johny Cash
Bravissimo!!
Grazie Ermanno, lieto di vederti anche su questo canale! 🙂
Where'd you find this and how much did it cost you? I've been looking aimlessly for about 2 years now but I can't find much in Sardinia
Sorry to respond so late, I noticed your comment only just now... If you are looking for the banjoline method of S. Leonardi, you can download it for free on imslp.org Try this link : imslp.org/wiki/Methode_pour_Banjoline_ou_Mandoline-Banjo_(Leonardi%2C_Salvator)
Wow! Is it possible to have the score?
This is from Weidt's tenor banjo collection, volume 1 which you can find here : imslp.org/wiki/Tenor_Banjo_Collection_(Weidt%2C_Albert_John) But this is notation for tenor banjo (CGDA tuning), which sounds an octave lower than the notation. In order to play this score on mandolin or banjoline (GDAE), this score should be transposed a 4th lower if you want to use the same fingerings and note positions as on the tenor banjo. I didn't transpose the score, but I first learnt to play this on tenor banjo, and then played it on banjoline, using the same fingerings as if I was still playing on the tenor. This sounds probably more complicated than it is ... 😅
@@banjoline thank you! It's not a problem for me to transpose it! Really nice 😊👍
Maravilloso 😍
Thanks :-)
Which kind of banjoline do you use ?
I play "Marius" banjolines. They were made in Brussels by two Italian brothers. The necks and heads of these instruments were made in Catania (with Roman style triangular neck). They were extremely popular in Belgium and very affordable. They stopped production around 1970. To my taste these are the very best banjolines ever made.
Thanks for your answer, I will check it.
Very nice.
Very impressive. I was surprised to see that you are also interested by banjoline. For my mandolin training, I use the book « méthode de mandoline et de banjoline » written by Edgar Bara. That’s how I discovered this instrument.
I actually knew the banjoline before the mandolin! My teacher at school (when I was 5) played banjoline, and I also wanted to learn it. But my parents could not find a banjoline teacher, and heard that a mandolin was tuned and played in the same way, so I started learning to play mandolin. I play banjoline rather occasionally, but I still like this instrument very much! In the early 20th century it was very popular and many excellent players played both mandolin and banjoline. Some players like Salvator Leonardi even thought that the mandolin would eventually disappear in favour of the banjoline. This is not exactly what happened, but the banjoline remained a popular instrument until the 1970s. Several methods are for both instruments.
Very interesting story. In my opinion we never know which trend we will have in the future. Maybe the mandolin or the banjoline are going to become very popular like the ukulele.
That was smooth,nice!!
Thanks :-)
Do I need special strings for this instrument or can I use strings for mandolin?
I asked because i bought banjoline yesterday and when I was tuning I broke one string. Sorry for my English but I'm still learning.
Mandolin strings are perfect for a banjoline! In fact I don't think you will find special strings for banjoline, they are exactly the same as for mandolin. The cheapest are usually the best! For example Savarez Argentine 1540, or Optima Silver 2145. For other brands: round wound strings sound better than flat wound (and are less expensive). And if you can choose, low (light) tension is better than high tension. Good luck with the banjoline! (Your English is just fine:-)
@@banjoline Thanks for answerig!
I am amazed at your skill. Must have taken a little time and practice. Like a whole lot! Excellent....how about some Mandolin.
Thanks for your appreciation! I do play mandolin, actually quite a bit more than banjo, and since more than 40 years... czcams.com/users/ralfleenen
I am sort of a failed mandolin, banjo guy. Your skill on that tiny instrument is monumental.
Genius picker. Excellent.
Thanks:-)
Awesome I love what you do!
Thanks! 🎶
Nice! I'd like to try this one on tenor banjo!
Thanks! Should be nice on tenor too. You can find the music here : imslp.org/wiki/Methode_pour_Banjoline_ou_Mandoline-Banjo_(Leonardi%2C_Salvator) It's N°160 :-)
The tenor banjo tuned a fifth below this mando banjo and this mando banjo is the alto banjo.
Wow, amazing accuracy and speed!
Thanks :-)
Playing along with a backing track? Either way, very nice sound.
Thanks! I first recorded the 2nd part and then made the video playing the first part along with the recording:-)
Love this!
Thank you! 🙏
