Good theory but it is a fictional story and a cartoon. That's just how the creator wrote it. The creator literally could've changed story to still make it to where everyone still saves the day. Or maybe the real reason is only having one sayin would've been to boring for the creator and that's the real and only reason he kept Vegeta alive

But in the manga and later the more accurate DBZ Kai, Goku’s motive was somewhat less noble: he only wanted Vegeta to live just for the challenge of fighting him again someday after both had recovered and gotten stronger (both from the Zenkai boost which Goku and the audience didn't really know about at the time [Vegeta revealed it to Kiwi on Namek right before killing him], and from further training). That was his motive.
