    This is 4 years late, but kerosene and baby powder that you just paint on and run the fan with the body at the AOA in question. Paint your wings black and you can see exactly how your airflow behaves when the kerosene evaporates and leaves behind the baby powder. You can get very advanced by mounting through the front and rear of your view port with your mounting surface floating between two panels. You can suspend these floating panels on load cells and get some really good data. If you make your floating panels round you can get a complete plot of lift to drag at pressure and speed at different AOA by letting ms excel draw up some graphs for you with the data you capture with your loadcells. You can also print your honeycomb structure and have your smoke tubes extending straight out of that, or mount your wing vertically and introduce the smoke through the leading edge of the airfoil through tiny holes, makes for some great viewing. I mean yours was already built, but just some ideas for anyone else that might want to experiment with building one.

      That’s a good question. It seems there are a lot of answers. For me, if the forward wing operates like a horizontal stabilizer, as a control surface, I consider it a canard. If it generates an appreciable proportion of the lift, I consider it a tandem. I haven’t seen an official definition.

    Hi - fascinated by your tandem wing project. I studied a tandem wing airliner for my Masters in the '70's; and now that I've retired I've built a Bert Streigler Delanne D200 (featured in the September 1981 Radio Control Models and Electronics magazine). I would point you at the Miles M35 & M39 Libellula designs, and also Maurice Delanne's designs. A key feature of the Delanne designs is the wing separation. The front wing is always larger than the rear wing to ensure that the downwash does flow over the rear wing. This in turn also ensures that the front wing stalls first and the aircraft pitches nose down The Arsenal Delanne 10 C-2 had a top speed of 345 MPH and landed at 45 MPH!! My D200 has some handling quirks in the it rolls out of loops and also in any inverted flight it rolls out the other way!! Take-offs are very squirrelly too. The control system is elevators on the rear wing and ailerons of the from wing. The next steps are an elevon control system and possibly a gyro stabiliser. John B

    • @DefiantWings
      @DefiantWings Před 7 měsíci

      The short answer is that it was just easier to do. It required less analysis and would allow for easier construction and modifications during testing. Using the same wing parameters meant simpler construction, and adjusting either wing's incidence was an easy way to tune the build during testing. While not as elegant of a solution, I don't think I compromised much in the area of efficiency, at least not at this scale. Good luck with your project!

    Would the tandem config be a good design for a slow moving, high payload uav aircraft? Of course with a larger wingspan or such.

    • @DefiantWings
      @DefiantWings Před 10 měsíci

      The tandem wing design is best use when you want to keep the wing span shorter for some reason. It isn’t going to be as efficient as a single wing with the combined span. It could be used for a slow/heavy plane if the wing chord, airfoil and span are designed for it. It won’t be as efficient a the single wing but it will have considerably less span. My early foam prototypes were very high wingload and flew efficiently. And they were small e to transport without removing the wings.

    I built a very rudimentary wind tunnel a few years ago; did what I was hoping to visualize which was vortices. I planned on building a better one and finally I'm biting the bullet. I'm also planning to use a radiator fan (16"). For my vapor it's going to go through the wings and exit out their tips in a specific location. Which means the connection to the wing and what allows the vapor to exit through is the same thing. I built my wings in the past out of cardstock which means I could create designated channels in the wing to direct the vapor itself to the tip. Worked perfectly. For the test section it's going to be 10x10"x3' length. All out of plexiglass. I'm thinking of painting the bottom and back side in vanta black for obvious reasons.

      Thx! I’m glad you enjoyed it. On the initial builds I used elevator up front on the small wing and ailerons on the larger rear wing. This worked well but led to a strange roll-pitch coupling in the controls. It wanted to pitch up when I rolled in either direction because the ailerons are behind the Cg. I ended up configuring it with elevons front and rear. This got rid of the pitching because the aileron moments were on either side of the Cg. It also helped with pitch controls because I could use less throw on the elevators because there were front and back. Hope that helps.

      The test section is on 12”x12” in section and 24” long. The tubing is 1/4” od copper tubing. I’ll have to check the ID

    Whoo, thats a Big Prop!! What are the advantages of this Wing?!

      Yeah, it’s really big for a wing,17”. It makes for an interesting launch. This wing is designed for long range/long endurance missions like mapping. Right now it has a flight time of 90 minutes. The large prop helps with the efficiency

    hey, I am looking to do this as a part of my master thesis, can you please name sources you used for determining geometry of a tunnel for best flow and speeds?

      www.intechopen.com/books/wind-tunnel-designs-and-their-diverse-engineering-applications/design-methodology-for-a-quick-and-low-cost-wind-tunnel This is one of the documents that I used and the only one that I still have a link to. Its a pretty good writeup and should help you with the sizing. I am planning to spend some time on the wind tunnel this winter to try to develop an instrumentation package. I'm also looking at a higher capacity fan as well. Too may projects, so little time

      @@DefiantWings thank you very much, finally a piece of literature that describes exact geometry after all the books I downloaded
