The immigration decision was something we have always wanted and we don’t regret at all. Leaving family, friends and long life behind us was not the only challenge that we had to deal with. There were many challenges that we did prepare for but there were more that we didn’t think of. The number of details and the new things, which we had to learn, was enormous. Starting another thousand-mile journey was never an easy task.
Dear immigrants don’t worry! It is not mission impossible! Things will ease up with every passing day, as long as you keep positive and optimistic. The purpose of these videos on my channel is to share our family immigration experience to Canada, Montreal with you. We hope that our experience will give you a better insight of what to expect when coming to Montreal or it will provide you with useful information.

Hi, You do not have to worry about this at all! by time you will get used to hearing and understanding them. These terms are used locally not at official level
Genoa Italy
From A Canadain retired electronic technician with added electrical qualifications: In regard to electrical appliances coming from abroad. the Domestic electrical supply in North America (both cnada and the U.S.A.) is 120/240 Volts 60 Hz. (not 100) However while I did mention 240 vlts, thus is not suitable for use with small appliances as such. The reason is the grounding arrangement is different. In many countries using 200 to 240 volts as the promary power for domestic items, this powewr is grounded at one end of what is really a 3 pahse wye, although all 3 phases are not likely to ender a single dwelling. The basic circuit capacity, or "ampacity" is typically 6 amperes. In North America, the transformers at the nearby pole or underground in some urban areas) supply 2 sets of 120 volts, 60 Hz. connected in series addition, rendering an overall of 240 volts. However theground is at the centter tap mening that each of the other 2 wires is "hot" to the tune of 120 volts, but each 120 electrical degrees out of phase with each other. The dwelling entrance than consists of 3 wires 2 of which are "hot". If you were then to connect a 240 volt foireighn appliance over those 2 wires, you would get 240 volts, but the case of the appliance could well be hot (or electrically live) to ground rendering it very dangerous, both in terms of riask of electrocution and of potentially causing fires. Using an transformer can get around the problem, but at great size, weight and expense. Only if the appliance cannot be replaced by something available here (such is if it has great sentimenal value, enough to justify the high cost of a transformer (may well be $150.00 or more), as well as tolerating the large size and weight of same) is this worth consideration. Such equipment is usually sold by industrial suppliers more than retailers and they do no offer consumer convenience as their main clientele is industry. The basic cirsuit for consumer appliances here has an ampacity (or ampere-capacity) of 15 amperes., hence wiring will be heavier, and each circuit in a building must have its own breaker (or fuse in sme older places) So when shopping for appliances , inspect the electrical specifications given before buying! Many Kitchen appliances (with a few special exceptions) will demand 15 amps for a single appliance, especially if they are heat generationg.) this means that such a device will demand the whole capacity of a normal circuit for itself alone. Add more and the breaker will trip, cutting off power. In older places it is also possible that unauthorized extensions to circuits have been added that do not conform to the Canadian electrical code (laws). These are all too often hidden fires waiting tho happen. If possible buy appliances that are rated at less than 1500 W. (for heat) or 1500 V.A.R. for some other types of equipment. Alsl remember that devices that use compressors (Refrigerators and freezers) and some others, cause an electrical inrush or heavy surge when they start. this also can be a problem at times, sometimes tripping a breaker even when the total connected load is within limits. Sometimes this can be worked around using slow blow fuses or high inrush breakers, but never rated more than the intended current. do NOT use oversize breakers or fuses, this is a serious fire hazard. If in doube sticak to 15 A. the minumum allowed circuit. For more extensive needs, call an electrical contractor, and let hi m take that responsibility, in spite of the cost.
Continued... I had forgoitten to add: Some large appliances are special cases for electrical power; In this list are: - Stoves- (typically 45 to 50 A., 240 volt, 4 wire.) - Clothes dryers- (30 A., 240 volt, 4 wire.) - Large heat pumps- (typically 50 to 200 A., 240 volt, 4 wire.) - Air conditioners in excess of 12, 500 B.T.U. per hour. - (typically 15 A., 240 volt, 4 wire. for the forst 12, 500 B.T.U. and additionally in proportion to thermal transfer capacity augmented to the nearest hight standard circuit size, additionally allowing for thermal inrush in proportion.) - Water heaters (water heater tanks). Each of these will require its own exclusive circuit that must be installed by a qualified electrical contractor, according to law. also the Canadian electrical code binds such contractors to follow that code it is forbidden to avoid or circumvent the code for any reason, particularly to reduce cost. doing so could also invalidate automatically part or all of your dwelling insurance. Immigrants arriving or about to arrive here might well copy my words to use when negotiating with anyone responsible for the electrical safety of a dwelling, in addition to any electrical contractor.
Re: kids: Language: While Canad has 2 official languages, in the streets of Montreal it is common to find some 80 languages spoken. Hence tyou will fond many Arabic speakers, but they may speak various dialects of Arabic.there are many Kopts who work as various medical people, such as pharmacists, doctors,m and much more. also there are many lebanese around. If there are children wiho are teenagers or more, they migh also go with the father and get the chance to learn what functioning in their new country as all bout! Note re money: Canada is well equipped to deal with multiple currencies. If you have American cash, or Euros, in addition to the various exchange kiosks in the airport and other places of intercity travel, you shouold also visit a Canadian Chartered bank and tell them your needs. they will be amply glad to help you. Canadian bills are not made of paper, and they are partially see-through. Each denomination has its unique colour,. starting with $5.00 which is blue. You will soon get familiar with the colours. As for coins,m the Canadian one cent piece is being phased out, as its purchasing power is less that the cost to produce it. Following that there is the nockek (5cents), dime (10cents) quarter (25 cents), the "loonie" ($1.00 13 sided fake gold coin) and the "Toonie" (Common within a coin slightly larger than the loonie, and worth $2.00. these are in common daily use in vending machines and more. Cellphones and smart phones: the law in Canada is changing as of December 1, 2017. From that sate on no service provider is allowed to charge for unlocking a device, and all devices sold after that date must be unlocked when sold. From the airport, if you then board the 747 bus to downtown, baggage and all, when you arrive at central station, by the underground city, you can walk to many services, banks, money exchanges, restaurants a major hotel, the Montreal metro, and varous train services from local commuter lines to trains across Canada and also into the United State. For inter-city travel in Canada, my personal rule of thumb is that oifI can do it by rail without requiring an overnight, I choose rail,m if not, better to fly, as the corss Canada train will take abbout 4 days during which you will live on the train - expensive but a nice educational vacation, try the second week of March, but also take summer clothes as well as winter as climates and temperatures havve very big variations, but seasonal, night and day as well as territorial. It is one way you will really see what Canada is like by Via rail. (also see their videos on You Tube.)
For Askmujarib: Because your primary language of presentatipon as well as your native language are Arabic, but also, at the same time I see you have to resort to some English words at times I get the improession that those words refer to items that may be totally unfamiliar to many Arabic=speaking immkigrants, and, as such there may be no easy Arabic equivalent for some things found here but not in their original countries, possibly just due to customs and loacl popular habits. I wonder if it would be expedient for such items to flash inset pictures of these items in the corner of your video at those moments? Would this help the audience? =============================================================== "Electrfying" once more! (Guffaw, laugh!) Also, for what I mentioned in regard to electricity, there are diagrams around for all this oon the internet, and even if they come from The U.S.A. at times, as long as they apply to domestic power they will be about the same.\ Industrial or 3 phase power, howevfer is different. In Canada we sue 600 volt 3 phase and up, in the U.S. they use 460 volt 3pahes and up, according to needs. This may well be of interest to any immigrant seeking to start ain industrial venture here, but does not apply to domestic use, as such power is not allowed in residentiai dwellings for reasons of safety.
For the kids: Don't be surprised if the officer wants to chat with the kids a bit. as long as they can understand each other it getas the kids used to the openness of Canada, however young children should be well coached as they grow up as to what is safe and what is not, and also WHY, so if somehting confronts then that is slightly different they are in thre best position themselves to be "street wise" according to their intellectual age. If the child ois a boy,. the officer might also throw him (verbally) a prank to test his interpersonal awareness! that could be fun for both the child, the officer and the parents watching their son "do his thing"!!
In conclusion: -> As muharib: Congratulations! Without being able to speak Arabic, I realize you did a lot of hard work to do this, and did extremely well. Becasuse your sound was slightly stzaccato, I realize the hard work you did, but as time goes on this will get easier if you continue to do public speaking. Are you familiar with toastmasters International? This is a very large non-profit organization based in California, but with 14 global zones, many areas and an enormous list of clubs. Its aim its to rteach public speaking and leadership, ever sonce its ounding in 1924. It now has some 300,000 or more members in 105 or more countries. In Quebec we are part of district 61 and there are about 60 clubs on the Island of Montreal, operating in combinations of English and French. However, Toastmasters is not a school,so no examinations or pass or fail it is a club environment and visitors are welcome subject individual club rules (this is because some clubs are specialized, or only for employees of a particular corporation or government department, so consult their website and find yourself a club to visit!)
