replacing the audio of a video file without re-encoding the video using Reaper and AVConvert
In this video, I'm showing how you can replace the audio in a video file without re-encoding the video, thus, without altering the quality of the video. I'm using the DAW Reaper only to determine the length of the new audio and to get the new sound just the way I wand it to sound. When the new audio is ready, I render it (but not the video!) and I then use my own utility AVConvert, which can be downloaded for free from my website, to losslessly combine/merge (multiplex or "mux") the new audio with the original video. The entire process is very easy to accomplish and also very fast. This video has been assembled in exactly the same way: The original 4k screen video has been muxed with the edited and mastered voice-over audio file.

First time I heard this piece of art but I wonder where is the Rick?
Bass player is pretty good
8:15 is my favorite and 12:57
Great song ❤
They NEVER sounded better. The sound system at that place is as good as I have ever heard. Amazing. And I didn't' know Wakeman was so funny.
Wow Geddy Lee on bass!
Absolutely fabulous,and Geddy banging the bass♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️Jon’s voice-ethereal,and everyone was totally fabulous….so moving♥️
It's going to be quite the show when you can have the incomparable Mr. Geddy Lee just drop in to come jam with your band.
First thought upon having this pop into suggestions: Yes only made it in in 2017? Second thought: Wait...wasn't Chris already gone then? So who could possibly.. Third thought: Well. *That* was a dumb question. Aaaand one of my oldest rock fantasies came true. Bonus thoughts: (1) If you're Rick Wakeman, why *wouldn't* you dress like a wizard? (2) It took me a few minutes to get all the Jojo's references in here. Sheesh, I'm slipping.
They fucking killed it! And good for Geddy - he did Chris Squire proud. 50 years later? Amazing! No old farts reunion here - they were young again!
Those are called master musicians, every single one of them. Incredible. His voice after all these years,, How? Amazing.
Go Getty!
Are you kidding me? Brought me to tears at the end.

Thanks for your software! Finally I can correct A/V sync issues from my older OBS recordings with just few a context menu mouse clicks. One question, I wonder if its possible to refine handling "batches of files" a bit more? Right now when I select for instance all 10 episodes in a folder and let AVconvert losslessly convert them with a single command click (in my case an A/V sync correction of -0.3) it DOES work, but AVConvert will open all ten files at the same time, showing me 10 ffmpeg.exe command boxes, and starts converting all 10 files simultaniously. I've not actually tested it but have the impression that converting multiple files at the same time actually slows down the TOTAL proces time considerably. Meaning right clicking each file seperately, only when the pervious one has finished, would in total be faster I think. So I would highly prefer it that whenever AVConvert is told to convert not one but multiple files, it would handle 1 file at a time, meaning: only after finishing nr1 start converting nr2 etc. Greetings
Thank you for your comment! I'm happy to hear that you find AVConvert useful. Also thank you for sharing your thoughts on how AVC's batch processing of multiple files could be improved. I'm actually no coder. AVC is a collection of simple FFmpeg batch commands made accessibly via the context-menu. This is about as much as my brain can handle :-) It has taken me a few years of research and work to get it to its current state since I'm only doing this in my spare time and as a hobby. I'll see if I can somehow improve the coordination of batch conversions. I'm absolutely seeing the usefulness of this, I'm just not sure if I have the capability to implement such a mechanism. Is this situation happening often for you? Obviously, the more conversion processes you initiate, the more your cpu has to share its cycles among the competing tasks. FFmpeg usually takes a lot of cpu in order to complete its task(s) as fast as possible and depending on what type of process you initiate, even a single FFmpeg instance can max out the cpu. However, there's a difference between processes that involve video re-compression/conversion (like resizing and adding overlays) which involve heavy cpu utilization and lossless video editing processes like fixing a/v sync. Lossless processes don't incolve a lot of cpu utilization since data is only copied from the source file to the target file. As a workaround for your issue, if AVC is temporarily maxing out your CPU, you can use "System Informer" (free, open-source task manager replacement utility) to tweak the cpu core affinity of ffmpeg.exe. If your cpu has multiple cores, first verify which cores are usually getting used by ffmpeg.exe and then remove affinity for specific cores. This will make your computer much more responsive, however, FFmpeg will also take longer to complete the tasks. Another option might be to use "Battle Encoder Shirase" (free) to specify a maximum cpu load percentage for ffmpeg.exe. Once configured, BES will detect whenever ffmpeg.exe launches and will only grant it the cpu load you allowed it to get. This can also improve the responsiveness of your computer while AVC is batch processing multiple files. Regarding multiple DOS windows popping up, this is expected behavior since for every process you initiate (every selected file that you wanna have processed) a dedicated ffmpeg.exe has to be launched and all processes are carried out in parallel rather than in series which usually is the desired behavior since it will make use of the system's resources in the best way and terminate as fast as possible. Any attempt to make it work in series will be less efficient in terms of system resource utilization and take longer.

I thought I recognized him, I’m like that guy’s on Rush playing bass? 😮
And here comes that heavy, growling bassline. We know Chris is gone. Who could it be. Obviously Geddy.
Salve Sigma ❤
In the meantime, I swapped the Sigma for two cascaded SSL SiX's. While the Sigma could only be used as a summing mixer, the SiX's are very useful during tracking, too, thanks to the preamps, channel EQs and channel comps and they each dispose of a bus comp. On top of that, they are portable and can be used separately.
@@SonicAxiom Thank you for passing on your experience, I didn't have the opportunity to work with SSL Sigma Ctrl but I'm thinking about purchasing it soon to set up my system, I'm from Brazil and a lot of equipment doesn't arrive here and all the knowledge acquired is through research in your country. big hug and good songs
Muito obrigado! Você já tem um Sigma? Se Você precisa da automação, é bom, caso contrário, os SiX oferecem mais opções. Eu usei principalmente a automação do Reaper.
Unreal sounding! Very good!!!

Is it just me or is this hilarious?
Hey SonicAxiom thanks for demonstrating this program! I have recently begun using MS Interrupt Affinity Configuration tool and ProcessLasso, Power Settings Explorer, along with Khorvie's Power Plan to address DPC latency and audio buffer underruns. I will try out SystemInformer too. Really interested in understanding more details. Did you move audiodg.exe to it's own core? Or your graphics cards? I am wondering if all audio apps (Ableton, Matrix Coconut, drivers, Windows sound stuff) would best belong together on the same cores or not. After much tweaking I made things worse LOL. Then I went into UEFI BIOS and set things properly and un-did all of my affinity tweaks, and so far things seem better, but now I'm looking for a good way to stress test for audio dropouts... Cheers
Music doesn't get much better than this.
How is possible to make such a legendary song even better? Put Geddy on bass. :D
no autotune needed
Video suggestion: windows 11 and Matrix optimizations for DPC latency and audio buffer underruns.
Thanks for your suggestion. Since I'm avoiding switching to Win11 for as long as possible, this won't happen any time soon. In the meantime, this video might help you avoiding audio issues, probably also on Win11: czcams.com/video/dj9iumt4fMg/video.html
When you're strapping 2 guitars at the same time for the intro you know they have to be a hell of a band! Listened to them when I was a child in the 70's!!
helpful overview! there's still not much content on vb-audio matrix on the web afaict. this video encouraged me to try it out. I have previously found the voicemeeter pretty difficult for my use cases and a router is more what I need. I haven't found a manual for this app though. How do the presets work? I was able to save my settings as an xml file but I don't understand the save/load routings vs presets or what to click to save as preset.
Thanks for your comment. Presets are managed via the right-click context-menu. Right-click a preset slot or a cell in the Matrix grid to reveal the preset options. Here's the author's own guide: forum.vb-audio.com/viewtopic.php?t=1807&sid=2b119663d622ad61098af06c480acf43

Great find! Any idea Why Reaper is skipping CPUs? Any way to ‘force’ it to use more?
Thanks for your comment! No, I have no clue why this is happening. I just posted on the Reaper forum. Maybe someone there has an idea.
This is tangential, but are you running a third party shell or taskbar in Windows?
You are correct. I prefer to use as little as possible from MS (only the bare operating system) and replace as many MS app as possible by third-party tools which are usually free and portable and do the job better in most cases. On this computer, I'm using OpenShell, I restored the QuickLaunch taskbar, I replaced the white window title bar by an accent colour to better be able to tell windows apart and I'm using System Explorer as a task manager replacement. I'm also using 7+TaskbarTweaker and WinAero Tweaker. I probably forgot to mention a few other replacement apps :-) Some people complain about the customizability of Reaper. I love tweaking and customizing stuff to make the computer and my entire working environment more efficient.
This guy playing bass is okay.......
So far this seems super stable. Been running the trial on an old surface pro (1st gen) and I set the buffer at 64. Not 196, 160, or 128, but 64. The delay was pretty minimal, no glitching and the highest the DSP meter ever was, was about 25% (I'm guessing its like a CPU meter in a Daw but it's own? Ran it through ableton and it's CPU meter stayed at 1%. Wild.) And so far using 8 inputs, 3 out in pair with a generic USB soundcard with no problem. And planning to add my old focusrite for more inputs/outputs. All using stuff I already own. This is crazy good, especially if this guy was using Dante. Like he said, this is breathtaking!
Thanks for your comment! Glad it works so reliably for you. For me, it's not a replacement but a great extension to my Dante network.
Sounds silly but for me, full on diy, wanted to make my simple interface able to act like an iem rack sending stem volume control separately for at least 2 people and one for mains. The only thing is hopefully that tiny delay won't throw anyone off. If anything, it could be a cheap comfortable practice rig
