Make Dual Lye Dish and Laundry Soap - solid bar to liquid soap
Whether you're looking for healthier and more eco-friendly alternatives to fossil fuel-derived detergents in plastic bottles or you love making your own house cleaning products, everyone needs clean dishes and clothes, and this soap does both. With a rainwater system, I put 1/4c white vinegar into the rinse cycle of the washing machine once a month, but if your water is hard I'd recommend using vinegar once a week to help prevent scale build up.
Some soap-makers prefer a 0% superfat for a clearer liquid soap but as saponification factors are averages only and the fatty acid profile of a plant oil can vary based on plant varieties and growing conditions such as soil composition and climate etc. I use a minimum of 0.5% superfat as an insurance against leaving any unreacted lye in the finished soap. If you prefer a 0% superfat then I would suggest using a hot process and checking the cooked soap with pH paper to ensure all of the lye has fully reacted. If the pH is 8-10 it should be safe, and pH of 11-14 indicates the presence of unreacted lye and the soap is not safe to use.
Recipe (40% lye solution, 0.5% superfat)
1000g coconut oil
91.1g NaOH
142.1g KOH
349.8g water
Dish soap EO blend at 3% of oils: 10g lemon; 10g litsea cubeba; 10g peppermint
Laundry soap EO blend at 1% of oils: 1.5g eucalyptus; 1.5g lavender; 2.5g peppermint; 4.5g tea tree
These were checked on the day of upload but errors can occur and the recommended safe essential oil usage rates can change.

Happy birthday SUGA! "Fire" is possibly my favourite BTS dance track (it's so hard to choose though) and SUGA's iconic 'Bultaoreune' thoughout is the inspiration for this soap. Here are my best five strategies I use for handling the inner critic, and lighting a candle (because it's better than cursing the dark). Good safety measures from what i can tell, executed flawlessly. Thanks for the tutorial!
Thank you very much! I hope you find it useful.
Essential oils emit harmful VOCs. Avoid inhalation!!!
Volatile organic compounds can be harmful, they can be harmless or beneficial (as with the essential oils used in aromatherapy). The concentrations I've used in this soap are consistent with current safety recommendations. Do you have a particular concern with the EOs in this recipe?
@@home_with_Eryl GC/MS testing has revealed the same VOCs present in all types of EOs. On what authority do you claim compliance with “current safety recommendations”? I hope you don’t think those two links suffice in that regard.
@@home_with_Eryl Aromatherapy is of questionable worth due to the absence of provable scientific benefits.
@@FrankGutowski-ls8jt Please link your research on these harmful VOCs in all essential oils
@@home_with_Eryl Sorry, but YT no longer permits doing so. Comments containing internet links won’t be saved; however, I’m confident you can compose suitable queries for Google about such matters.
Omg, a squeeze bottle! Brewing life officially changed
So happy to help!
Heh heh, smoothly huh!?
The blooper reel for the LAZY hive would have doubled the video length!
Ma'am, you have saved me money and time with your video. I've been wanting to get AZ hives, but living in the US, they are expensive, and since I already have Langstroth boxes, you made it easy peasy. Thank you!!
Thank you, and I'm delighted you've found this useful! I'm happy with how the hive is working out so far, and I love not lifting boxes! I think the only thing I miss is the lugs on the frames, which make them easier to handle during inspections. If you're also considering a long hive, I've just finished converting a Langstroth to a long Lang, and it was much easier than this one (in terms of doing the woodwork). I'm editing the video and will upload it as soon as I can. All the best with your beekeeping :)
Looking forward to your next update! Thanks for sharing your knowledge & experience. 😀
Thank you!
Good lord, this is SUCH an impressive video! Everything is so clear & your woodworking skills are impressive (contrary to your modest self-assessment). I was very happy to find this after only today "discovering" the hybrid Slovenian AZ hives and then the Langstroth sized frames. I first found the Drebberville Hives, which seemed to have an abrupt end. I was saddened to discover that Brian Drebber was killed in a motorcycle/deer accident in 2018. Then I stumbled across what is called the LAAZY hives and it seems this has been shortened to Lazy Hives, as in your wonderful video. Thank you for making it, and for the links in the description. I have a 10x12 shed that I built as a coffee Roastery. The idea is now rolling around in my head to build this sort of hive on the south side exterior (out of our north winter winds) with the backs that open to the inside of my roast room - allowing me to add beekeeping to my list of too many hobbies! :) We'll see if it ever happens! (I'm far less capable at actually FINISHING things than you are - but thank you for the inspiration!!! :D
Thank you so much, you are very kind! And this sounds like a wonderful idea. I'd love to have my bees in a shed and out of the weather, but given our stringent AFB regulations here in New Zealand (any hive with AFB must be burned and the entire apiary is under quarantine for 18 months), I'm reluctant to keep my hives that close together. Combining coffee roasting with the wonderful scent of beehives would also draw people if you like giving tours :) I'm currently working on converting a vertical Langstroth hive to a long hive, again for lower energy/ back-saving beekeeping, so I can do a compare and contrast with the LAZY hive. Hopefully the hive conversion video will be ready by next month. Let me know if you go ahead with your hive, and happy beekeeping!
aww this is my absolute fave of all the soaps - it seems quite luxurious as a soap, but cute at the same time lol... thank you for sharing!
Thank you so much! Jimin's soap just had to be a mochi!
Wow - very creative thinking - I really liked the design of your first batch - definitely had 'super tuna' vibes!!! Loved the video!
Thank you - I think the scales looked a bit more realistic in the first one too, the second one looks more like chainmail!
Love that lavender is included in all the soaps in this series - such a beautiful 'borahae' touch!
Thanks ARMY!
oh my gosh! End result is soo kool 💜
You are so kind! I was so thrilled about getting this shape by accident too!
Gosh, the scent must have been delish!!! Cleverly designed too!
This really took four attempts to get right. I've started a writing a rap which I may one day post, about Parts 1 to 3!
You did such a great job with this soap - tricky but gorgeous!!!
Thank you! My heart sank when the embeds started moving, I'm so glad you like it!
Beautiful! Loved watching your soap making process & seeing the design come to life!!!
Thank you so much for your encouragement - I REALLY appreciate it!
I love the camera angle and the wood bowl and table, everything looks so pretty, and the wonderful cadence to your voice adds to that!
You are so kind! Thank you!
Lovely 😍
Thanks! I hope you enjoy making it too.
That's stunning!! Now I want one!!
Compassionate, thoughtful and wise. Such an intelligent response- responses- to that terrible voice in our heads! So much more constructive than my personal approach of self- pity or swearing. Your warmth comes across in your voice and tone. Thank you for the bravery it took to share something so deeply personal. Love and awe from me to thee.
You are so kind! Thank you. I hope it helps. Love you!
oh my goodness!!! My two favorite things- BTS and soap ❤
Yay! I was playing my BTS playlist while making this! Do let me know if you make this recipe, I'd love to hear how it goes. Stay strong ARMY!
Here because the CZcams algorithm knows that I like watching people making soap and that I like people named Jung Hoseok lol! The soap looks so cool, I've never seen a checkerboard like that before!
Thank you ARMY! I nearly went cross-eyed trying to figure out how to replicate that pattern! Borahae!
This stuff is the best. I keep one in the fridge for hot days. Im not allergic to it, and actually helps my cracked lips.
I'm so glad it helps!
Share with your science teacher friends! That was fascinating
Thanks! I should probably have intervened sooner but it was too interesting!
Clever! A kilo seems a lot, I'd need a lot more people to write to 😂😂😂
Thanks, and I always appreciate your letters!
I love this! Adorable soaps!
Thank you so much! Tae loves hot chocolate, so it seemed appropriate.
Whoa! Good that you shared this! Most people don’t know this can happen! Hugz, Tree
Thanks! I was quite surprised when it happened, and I'll be more diligent about checking temperatures, and keeping the mould more in the centre of the table from now on!
Like your use of milk cartons. I think theres less loss of scent that way. Ive been frustrated at how my soaps lose fragrance while curing.
Thanks, I hadn't thought about the effect on the scent, but I think you're right. Some essential oils seem to disappear entirely in soap; they don't last in the high alkaline environment. The ones I used in these soaps seem to have held well though, maybe due to the clays and also being closed up for the first few days.
@@home_with_Eryl I gotta try that this spring. I'm only making soap OUTSIDE from now on!
Did they make tallow soap more commonly in the early pākeha times?
For centuries soap has been made from olive oil around the Mediterranean region, and mostly from animal fat elsewhere in Europe where olives don't grow well. I haven't done any research into early NZ pakeha soaps yet, but I'd guess they would be making their own soap from the fat of the various domesticated animals they brought with them, and using lye from wood ash. Thanks for the question, I now need to find out!
Amazing formulation, thank you
You're so welcome!
That is SO COOL
Thank you!
It makes lots more sense now I've seen it as a hive!! Baby beekeeper was just gawking at the hand tools, and not really keeping up with the idea. Builders wives didn't even know you could still do things without power tools. Certainly her builder didn't own any...😅😅😂😂
Ps. Your woodworking skills are impressive!
Your videos are wonderful. So informative and accessible. Keep up the wonderful work.
Absolutely making this!
This is sooooo good. Especially for my super dry skin.
I'm so glad you like it!
Love this, including the detailed explanations for the process. Watching it again.
Thank you! Borahae!
That's a great video! Very professional. Clever woman. BTS FOREVER!!!
Thank you! The best is yet to come!
