Wild camping on one of Arrochars finest Corbetts, if not one of Scotland’s finest, Beinn An Lochain. Sitting at 901 meters Beinn An Lochain just misses out on Munro status, infact it was included in Sir High Munro’s original Munro tables but recent calculations put the summit just short of Munro status. Don’t let this fool you, it’s still one fine wee summit! liam_campbelll

    Just my opinion, I think many of us would prefer the footage at normal speed because we want to feel immersed in the climbing experience as much as possible, as if we’re right there with you. Speeding up the video prevents the audience from having a visceral experience, reminding us that we’re just on onlooker. The first-person perspective naturally evokes a sense of realism, so I think it’s best to not mess with that. Anyways, thank you so much for the video. I appreciate you for sharing :)

    Do you have any recommendations for locations where a beginner can go to work on the basics of ice climbing without getting too technical(not a ice climbing gym, but actual outdoor locations you think would be good for a beginner)? I would really appreciate any locations as I am new to ice climbing in Scotland and don't have much experience with where to go.

      I'd say Coire an t'Sneachda in the Cairngorms. It's like the Stanage Edge of winter climbing. Short, easy & generally safe approach & descents. Quite a few Grade Is & an assortment of Grade IIs to get you going. Won't need many ice screws, if any. Cairngorm granite often takes nuts at the side of the gullies, take a set of asymmetric nuts like DMM offsets as they really help wih flared cracks.

  • @duncanbeard9460
    @duncanbeard9460 Před rokem

    That route was my first Grade III lead. The only bit I recognise is at 1:14, setting off up the wall. I recall only 1 or pieces of rock gear per pitch, no ice solid enough for screws. Belays were solid single nut placements. It was so cold my thumbs seized up!

  • @weedaviec
    @weedaviec Před rokem

    Watching this I was hoping you would change up the edit so it wasn't just ffwd downshots. Some pauses with pans round the coire, no music and normal speed climbing with actual sound would make this a much better video.

  • @scottishmountaintops5099

    Little tip when you are removing screws, Bang them off something (I usually use my head) so that the ice comes out. If you don't the ice can freeze on the inside and you wont be able to place it again.

    • @liam_campbelll
      @liam_campbelll Před rokem

      Sure I can be seen at the start of the video hitting the screws off the ice a few times before popping them on my harness. A few seasons ago I swapped onto lead at the belay and took the rack off my partner, headed up the pitch couldn’t get a single screw in because they were frozen full😂 wasn’t a happy bunny. By the last few screws on this route not one fk could be given as it was that cold and knew they weren’t getting placed again as I was getting to fk off the hill😂

    Thanks for the video Liam. The drone footage around the Ben is class and the drone footage of the start of the climb into Comb Gully is so cool. My mate and I started winter climbing about 3 years ago, we have no mentors or experienced heads to keep us right and No.2 Gully was our first climb. As two rookies, we had some trouble finding it, pair of eejits!... This drone footage would have been great for us to scope out the upper topography of the mountain. Am looking at your footage now and using it to help pick out and visualise some of the other grade 2 - 3 stuff from the guidebook that we want to try this winter. Thanks again, class stuff altogether!
