Amtraks including Salute to Veterans locomotive, MOW equipment and NS!
Alot of high speed Amtraks here again The Salute to Service locomotive shows up two different days pulling The Silver Service and we get a unique piece of MOW equipment. It is a catenary MOW vehicle designed to install and maintain overhead electrical lines. We are on the Northeast Corridor which is heavily electrified overhead. We also have 2 metroliner cab cars. Keen eyes will spot it towards the end of the video.
Finally, Norfolk Southern is taking empty coal cars out of Baltimore. Perhaps anticipating the complete reopening of the channel and port of Baltimore?

These were all captured over a coiple days. Slapshots van makes an appearance 2 days in a row. We get a slow mover and an Amtrak MOW track crew headed north to do their work. Norfolk Southern mixed manifest heads south into Baltimore on electrified lines. Typically it is local freights and high speed passenger trains that fly through here. A high speed Amtrak heads north on the other side as this train goes by. #norfolksouthern #trains

The first meet/heritage locomotive is the Amtrak Salute to our Veterans unit. This happened as I was walking up to the tracks. The other meets were a surprise. It was a very slow day. Waited quite a bit for the first manifest. I left the location and had the scanner on. I heard a local with light power trying to get clearance from dispatch to go to Frito Lay to pick up empties but he had to wait for a track inspector. That is not the hirail shown later. I heard on the scanner that M410 was asking for clearance, eastbound on track 2. The dispatcher granted it. There is a Louis-Dreyfuss covered hopper on this train and a gon full of new railroad ties. Enjoy! #csx #freighttrains

Rosedale on Saturday was very slow so I moved to Martin Airport where the Amtrak action is typically hot. This day, not so much. I got the Acela Express but no other trains. Product spillage on an open hopper created a smoke screen, which added to the smoke from the locomotive. Look closely you will see the pile of product. I could smell the brand new railroad ties in the gons. #csx #trains

I like watching from west Baltimore near the abandoned American Ice plant as well as Gwynn’s tower, Halethorpe and Catonsville.
And the the star was definitely the freedom thrower 😊 the trains were cool too but that A10 though

The Northeast corridor is one of the busiest rail lines in the world. And it's only gonna get busier
They are definitely gonna keep some old Acela Amtrak trains around because they still have life of them just in case the new Acela Amtrak breaks down I'm telling you.

Why the Amtrak shorts? Equipment moves? And which NEC regionals routinely run double ended?
I suspect bad order cars. One of those cars on the shorties had a broken window.
Regionals that stay on the electrified Northeast Corridor are double ended as it's usually two ACS-64s.
6:17 Chargers 354 & 356 those came to DC on Train 30 a few days before.

Usually, a Amtrak regional runs with a cab car to WAS on sundays on 121, but I'm not sure why it was this day.

I didnt even compile all of it. Typically I can get at least 10 trains in a couple hours there, and that's just Amtrak.

Amtrak is planning to phase out the use of the Metroliner Cab Cars due to age and safety concerns, and is trialing using HHP-8s as unpowered cab units in their place as an interim until it can finally get the new Airo sets. This may mean that the Metroliners are taking a final bow as simple coaches, not being used as cab cars at all (aside from possibly reversing in yards). A poetic, but bittersweet, last act for what was once the crown jewel and shining hope of American railroading.
Amtrak is also about to get rid of their current Acela trainsets (they're way past the end of service life). They are testing the new consists now on the NEC and they are supposed to be in service by the end of 2024.

The Budd Metro cab cars are still viable to use as intermediate consist cars with some modifications by eliminating the cab to increase seating capacity. They have severed their design purpose very well and having a few extra cars because of high ridership demand makes sense until the new replacements for the Amfeet 1/2 are place into inventory.
@@Stanf954 There's no point in modifying the Metroliner cars with Airo coming into play in the next few years.
@@Stanf954 As Mr. Marshmellow noted, the time and expense of modification vastly outweighs any benefits in the hopefully (sadly) few years they have left before retirement. The Metroliners are the last Pre-Amtrak equipment still in revenue service. It will be a sad day indeed to see them go.

Interesting! That looked like a NE Regional, I wonder why they had a metroliner cab car on it. I think the two services tend to share a lot of equipment but I haven't seen this ever myself
