I have just discovered that in old age the skills we learned as children don't go away. Those endless scales on the piano, the exhausing barre exercises, learning our 'times tables' , learning Shakespeare by heart , and in my mother's school long, long ago , learning to draw and paint an apple. Ones brain keeps all these disciplines intact. Why do we now think those very disciplines are 'cruel'? Has some Evil Mouse King (Nutcracker) decided to eradicate all that is good and we are unworthy of discipline and memory? Teach your children those 'cruel' disciplines so that like Marta dancing again and indeed Michael Redgrave, suddenly awakening speaking the whole of a Shakespeare soliliquy, our talents don't vanish into the mists. Give our children things to remember and bodies to store those memories before it is too late!

She’s lovely. Still beautiful and graceful. As I’m taking care of my Aunt whose 82 (who was once the strongest woman that I have ever known) age is so hard because she wants so hard to just live life as it was but she’s losing her balance and strength and no longer can do everything she used to. It’s hard to see those we love age.

i always come back here. always, always, always. i have worked as a caregiver for 10 years, both paid and unpaid, for family and for friends-to-be. i also happen to come from a family very passionate about music, and as such, learned the value of music therapy for those with Alzheimer's and/or Dementia. it has been my honor to witness people thought lost to their loved ones return, even if only for two or three minutes, after hearing their favorite song. after moving to another state, i've not been able to find work as a caregiver. i had to give that up, but i've always held music close to my heart. if nothing else, i know i'll never lose that. i always cry seeing this gorgeous primadonna, remembering and missing everyone else whose soul remembered each note beat-for-beat.

My mother cannot remember her own family name any longer and I always have to explain to her who I am. "I am your Mama? Really?" she says. But she has always loved classical music, although she did not play instruments herself. I played Tjajkovsky's first piano concerto to her on her Bluetooth speaker, and she started to hum along. "And now ... now comes the crescendo!" Afterwards she almost danced out to her dining room, although she could barely walk, and kept on whistling the themes of the concerto.
