Georgia Cabin - Vic Wong solo guitar - 1932 L-5
Morning Coffee Session#165: Georgia Cabin - Sidney Bechet 1941. Another one from the Fort Worden bunker sessions.
I feel like I should say more in these posts. It has come to my attention that some people perceive me on social media as a good musician... even a disciplined, focused, and well-educated one! Well I can assure you I'm not, and it's all just coping mechanisms for the turmoil swirling around upstairs. I sometimes hear someone else play wonderfully, then hear myself play on a stray recording and it makes me not want to touch the guitar for weeks.
I recently read through the retrospective book "Monograph" by cartoonist Chris Ware and his captions are hilariously riddled with this torturous "I suck" narrative. First of all, he obviously doesn't suck. He's one of the most virtuosic graphic illustrators of our time and has all the accolades to prove it. While this feeling can be debilitating, Ware credits two things to keeping him on track: a private space to experiment without judgement (ex. a sketchbook), and deadlines.
Noodling clumsily on the guitar when no one's listening is my private space. Putting out a video once in a while that I kinda don't like is my arbitrary deadline.
Hanging with other really great musicians in the past few weeks hammered home the fact that they all feel this way. So that helps. And maybe ultimately, the hang is what it's about: getting with other musicians, talking about how much you think you suck, gushing about other musicians who might say the same about you, and hacking through tunes you half-know. That all feels great.

Just One More Chance - solo guitar

Morning Coffee Sessions 164 - "Just One More Chance" 1931 - Sam Coslow and Arthur Johnston played by Vic Wong on a 1932 L-5. A very pretty old tune, that caught my ear via Les Paul and Mary Ford who recorded it in 1951. Recorded in Fort Worden, Port Townsend WA near a pleasingly reverberant bunker structure.

Morning Coffee Sessions 163 - Ain’tcha Glad - Fats Waller 1933. I heard this performed wonderfully by Jon-Erik Kellso, Josh Dunn , and Jay Rattman trio on CZcams (the whole show captured by Michael Steinman Jazz Lives is so great by the way... link in comments). It seems like any time a jaunty little melody catches my ear, it’s by Fats. Lots of tricky shifting to hit the wide range on this one ...

Morning Coffee Sessions 162 - Am I In Another World? - Johnny Green, Ted Koehler 1937. I love Fats Wallers recording of this tune, which features some surprise steel guitar. Speaking of being in “other worlds”, I’ll be living in New York for 5 weeks starting 12/27. I guess that makes me 1/10th a New Yorker for 2024. Looking forward to seeing all my pals there!

Cumbia de la Gatita Diabla - Vic Wong 2023. A little surfy/psychedelic ditty written for my mischievous little housecat, but the video is a tribute to the deadliest cat in the world: the black-footed cat, which manages to catch a whopping 60% of its prey. Not bad for a 4-pound beast! Footage from BBC Studios documentary "Big Cats S1 E2", full clip here: czcams.com/video/s6d9rqhivQY/video.html

Morning Coffee Sessions #160: In a World Of My Own - Sammy Fain (c.) Bob Hilliard (l.) 1951. A classic “I wish” song in one of my favorite Disney movies as a kid: “Alice in Wonderland.” I recently heard this in Spanish (as “Mi País De Ilusión”) and thought it was so pretty. So naturally I thought I’d play it on the Spanish guitar. Added a little filter to give it the VHS vibe which is how I c...

Morning Coffee Sessions #158: Someone To Watch Over Me - 1926 George Gershwin (music) Ira Gershwin (lyrics). Played while a flea market painting of a very happy dog happens to be watching over me. A beautiful song that I always wanted to get more familiar with. Thanks for watching (over me).

Morning Coffee Sessions #157: Louise - Richard Whiting 1929. Arranged for a recently departed. Part of why learning new repertoire is important is that I'll otherwise just endlessly practice chord melodies that are easy to play on the guitar. This one sure isn't.
You took advantage of me - Joe Pass solo guitar transcription

Morning Coffee Sessions #156 - A solo guitar chorus of "You Took Advantage of Me" (Rodgers and Hart 1928) that came off the top of Joe Pass' head in 1976. My transcription is linked below. I started with "what the heck am I supposed to to over the B section of this tune?", found this duo recording of his with Ella Fitzgerald, and ended up transcribing the whole thing because it's just so ingeni...
Souvenirs - Django Reinhardt - Happy birthday Django!

Morning Coffee Sessions #155: Souvenirs - Django Reinhardt 1938. Happy birthday to my hero! One of the first compilations of Django that I owned was named after this tune. I distinctly remember trying and trying to figure out the chords, but coming from a background of rock and pop music I didn't really know where to start. I even tried doing a frequency analysis in a computer program to see wh...

Hey Vic, cool idea !! only thing is i'd love to hear a video comparing the sound of the AT in bridge position vs in sound hole position, any chance you have that? i could use onee for my archtops, but my AT is broken and i bought the Dpa4099g, but their goose neck is mainly designed for guitars other than archtops, guitars that have a regular sound hole. Any chance you've designed amicrophone mount for dpa so i could have i nicely catch the sound either in front of the treblee f hole (that what i try to do) or behind the bridge? thanks in advance !!!
Good idea about sound samples. I'll try to get around to that! For DPAs, I've seen folks like Stout use the DPA "cello mount" to clip the gooseneck to the tailpiece.
@@vicwomg ah that s right i remember now ! Cheers
Wow, $20-$30 for this! I guess that top bracket is something you can't get just anywhere but it's a good idea.
Very nice playing
Great job!!!
Fabulous! And a Rhodes ep too!
Great
This is beautiful man!!
masterful, finally someone included the intro section! nice work
That's very pretty!
nice Video! do you have any tips on how to not have to adjust the pickup every time you change Strings ? (how to make it stay In place)
The thing about the Fender Tilt-Backs is that they both makes the amps work in different situations,-and they make the Amp look good ."the stick" is just meh.
AWESOME!!!
greatness
Nice
Yeah nice one!
👏🏼
Very nice!
Im already in love bro. 🥹
Bing and Eddie say thanks.
Just lovely and swinging!
Beautiful job Vic!
So nice!
Awsome!
Beautiful!
Hi! Are these still available? Would you be able to send to England? Thanks! 😊
Yes and yes. Link is in the video description
Nice! How did you make the ir profile of your guitar?
Great job Vic! Keep going.
is that George benson sitting in the back? cool!
Haha, I doubt it. None of us would be able to play a note if so.
Siamo all apoteosi della musica, superba
In 1979 I saw SG at Leek when he used an electric violin or viola with deeper string tuning
That rock steady backing is like sitting on a soft cushion that makes you improvise whether you like it of not-
ООО!!!
Pretty cool, just too back it won't quite work on a Vox AC4, back panel has no horizontal gap. Oh well, guess I'll have to eventually come up with one myself.
Bravo !
Amazing performance, thanks for posting it.
Amazing
Intemporel Django restera toujours un immense musicien virtuose de la guitare 🎸du jazz manouche.
As a 9 year old in the 1950s listening with my mum to a radio program called Housewives choice a request for the Hot club quintet playing The Sheik of Araby was played. I was awestruck when my mum told me the guitarist only had two fingers. I am in my mid 70s now and Django's guitar still gives me goosebumps. Over the years I have collected all of his recordings.
Fantastique.
When Django pulled off his trademark three-octave chromatic run with supreme Gallic nonchalance it made me laugh out loud for sheer joy!
I tried the NUX Optima Air and I am quite pleased with the provided IR's. So far it is the best system to amplify an acoustic guitar for me. As you point out yourself there is a bit a lack of high's. I was able to get an even better tone with saturation (L.R. Baggs Align Session comp/saturator) and at the end of the chain an Aphex Exciter pedal (there are dedicated versions for acoustic guitars/ elctric guitars and bass guitars and there is a version which combines the 3 dedicated ones in one pedal, I use the last one). I also use reverb and delay.
Django always sounds like he's got 6 fingers on his fretting hand! Amazing what he was able to do with just two. If you're a fan of Gypsy Jazz do yourself a favor and check out Stephane Wrembel and Stochelo Rosenberg. Two of the finest Gypsy Jazz Gtr players out there today.
God Django was amazing.
They were so great! 🙂🎸👽

This is truly wonderful. Thank you Vic and youtube.
Didn't Jackson Browne's dad play with Django?
